it starts with something small like a hair tie you forgot to take on his gear stick, a receipt from a convenience store date tucked into the sun visor, a keychain you won from an arcade hanging from his rearview mirror. when you ask him why he never throws them away, he just shrugs, “they’re lucky.” “babe, that’s literally a used movie ticket–” “and? i won my race the next day.” and before long, his car was full of little pieces of you. a polaroid wedged into the corner of his dashboard, a bracelet you thought you’d lost looped around his wrist whenever he races, a sticky note with your handwriting folded inside his glove compartment.

the other racers make fun of him for it, “those aren’t lucky charms,” they sneered. “they are if it’s hers.” he says it so seriously that nobody knows whether to laugh or be concerned. and maybe it is stupid, but before every race, he taps one of those trinkets for good luck. not because he thinks that they’ll magically help him win but because they remind him that there’s someone waiting for him at the finish line. someone he would love to go home to. so when people ask what his most prized possession is, they would most likely expect him to point at the car he’s spent years with and a lot of money on but instead, he reaches for the polaroid of you at a vinyl store on his dashboard and smiles, “this.’

the racing scene (especially an illegal one) is small enough that everyone knows everyone, which means everyone knows you’re his. unfortunately, that doesn’t stop people from trying.
it usually starts at meetups, some driver you’ve never met before strikes up a conversation while jaehyun was busy cleaning his car and you’re too polite to walk away. from across the lot, jaehyun notices immediately. he pretends he doesn’t though. for aboutt 15 seconds. then suddenly he’s appearing beside you, arm slung casually around your shoulders as if he’d been there the whole time.
“hey.” he says. the other driver glances between the two of you, “oh, you two are together?” “mhm.” the smile on jaehyun’s face is friendly enough. but the grip around your shoulder says otherwise. he doesn’t get angry, doesn’t start fights, and doesn’t act possessive. he just becomes unbearably clingy. he’s following you around, resting his chin on your head, stealing your attention every five seconds. “babe.” “yea?” “you’re jealous.” “am not,” he says while literally holding your hand.
the worst part is when another racer openly flirts with you right before one of his races. because he’s now climbing into the driver’s seat annoyed. and everyone knows what that means. later that night, after crossing the finish line first, he walks straight past the crowds, straight past the celebrations, straight to you. “you won.” “i know.” “aren’t you happy?” you asked. he shrugs before reaching over and lacing his fingers through yours so everyone watching gets the message, loud and clear. “happier now.” with that huge ass grin on his face.

it becomes a running joke between the two of you. after a race, still buzzing with adrenaline and victory, he’ll throw an arm around your shoulders and announce dramatically, “that’s it, i’m done.” you don’t even bat an eye at his antics, “mhm..” “seriously.” “okay..” “i’m retiring.” “you said that last week..” “this time i mean it!” he never means it. because three days later, you’ll find him under the hood of his car at two in the morning, tweaking something that absolutely did not need tweaking. “i thought you retired?” “i did..” “then why are you working on the car?” “..maintenance..” “for?” you asked with a raised eyebrow. “..future maintenance..”
eventually, the other racers start placing bets on how long his ‘retirement’ will last. the record is three days. what nobody realises is that every time he says it, a part of him genuinely means it. especially after a close call. especially when he catches the look on your face as he steps out of the car safely. the relief, the fear, the way your shoulders finally relax. and those are the moments when he thinks maybe he should quit. maybe he’s had enough. maybe winning doesn’t feel as good as knowing you’ll never have to worry about him again. but then another race comes around. another challenge. another chance to chase the adrenaline he’s spent ages chasing. and he can’t quite let go. so he keeps saying it.
“one more race and i’m done.” until one night, a few days later, he comes home after a race and he finds you asleep on the couch waiting for him, phone still in your hand and the living room lights still on. and for the first time, he doesn’t know what to do.

the thing is, he knows they are. that’s why he gets so defensive. it usually starts the same way. you hear about a crash, a near miss, a race that got shut down halfway through. and when he casually mentions it later, you stare at him in disbelief. “you could have gotten hurt..” “but i didn’t.” he shrugs. “that’s not the point jaehyun.” “then what is it?” and suddenly you’re arguing. his voice gets sharper, your frustration grows. neither of you are really listening anymore. because while you’re trying to explain why you’re scared, he’s trying not to think about the fact that you’re right. he hates it. hates how your words linger in his head long after the fight ends. hates how he can’t confidently tell you it’ll never happen again. because he can’t.
one night, the argument gets worse than usual. he accuses you for not trusting him and before he can stop himself, he says, “then maybe you shouldn’t wait for me anymore.” the second the words leave his mouth, he regrets them. the silence that follows is deafening. you look at him like he’s just slapped you. and for the first time, jaehyun realizes what these arguments have never really been about. it’s not that you’re terrified of getting a phone call in the middle of the night. or terrified of hearing sirens and wondering if it’s him.
later, when he finds you sitting alone after the fight, he doesn’t try to defend himself. doesn’t make excuses. doesn’t tell you that you’re overreacting. he just sits beside you quietly. for a moment, neither of you speak. then he reaches for your hand, “i know it’s dangerous.” his voice barely above a whisper. and somehow, hearing him admit it hurts more than all the arguments combined. because for once, there isn’t denial. no stubbornness. just the truth. and the truth is that every race scares you. but losing you scares him even more.

for years, racing was simple. he loved the speed. the adrenaline. the feeling of being completely free for a few fleeting seconds. every risk felt worth taking. until you came around. because suddenly there was someone waiting for him after every race. someone who always answered his late night calls. someone who would sit in the passenger seat and absentmindedly fiddle with his fingers at red lights. someone who started feeling less like part of his life and more like his future. and that’s what makes it difficult. the first time the thought crosses his mind isn’t after a crash. it isn’t after a dangerous race. it is after something painfully ordinary. you fall asleep in his car. head resting against the window. your hand loosely intertwined with his.
and as he glances over at you while stopped at a red light, he catches himself imagining this years from now. a future. a life. something permanent. the thought shakes him. because for the first time, he has something he genuinely does not want to lose. after that, little things start getting to him. the way you always text him to let you know when he’s safe. the way you always text him to let you know when he’s safe. the way your shoulders visibly relax whenever he steps out of his car unharmed. the way you never outright ask him to quit, even though he knows parts of you wants to.
one night, after a particularly rough race, he’s sitting alone in his car long after everyone else has left. the engine is off. the lots are empty. and for the first time, winning doesn’t feel as good as it used to. instead, all he can think about it you. about how quickly everything could change and he hates that thought. he hates how much power it has over him but he hates the possibility of leaving you behind even more. so when you find him later that night unusually quiet, you ask what’s wrong.
he stares ahead for a moment before asking, “have you ever thought about what happens after?” “after what?” “after all of this.” it’s the first time he’s ever sounded uncertain and tired. when you don’t answer immediately, he laughs softly. not because anything is funny. but because he finally understands. racing used to be the thing he couldn’t live without. now he’s not so sure. because somewhere along the way, you became the thing he couldn’t imagine living without instead.

nobody notices it at first. not even him. because he still shows up to every meetup. still hangs around the garages until ridiculous hours of the night. still has grease stains on his hands and engine parts scattered across his workspace. the only difference is that he’s spending less time behind the wheel. and more time underneath the car. it starts with him helping a friend, then tuning someone’s engine before a race. then rebuilding an old project car just because he was bored. before he knows it, entire weekends pass without him racing at all.
instead he’s teaching younger drivers how to replace parts properly. arguing with people over modifications. getting way too excited over tools. you make fun of him constantly. “you’re getting old.” “yah! i’m still in my early twenties!” “you sound like a dad.” “you’re crazy!” he says while giving a full fifteen minute lecture about proper engine maintenance. the truth is, he doesn’t mind. because somewhere along the way, racing stopped being his entire world.
he still loves cars, the sound of an engine roaring to life and the people he meets. but he’s starting to realize that maybe he was never in love with racing itself. maybe he was in love with what it gave him. a place to belong, a purpose, something to chase. but now? he has other things. you. late night dinners, lazy afternoons, future plans that stretch further than the next race weekend.
one evening, you’re sitting in the garage while he works on a friend's car. music hums softly through his speaker and the air smells faintly of gasoline and motor oil. you watch him wipe his oily hands on a rag after tightening a bolt. “you haven't raced in a while.” he glances over at you and smiles, “guess i’ve been busy.” but he doesn’t tell you he had made up his mind weeks ago, that he’s found something he enjoys more than crossing the finish line. it was never a car or the adrenaline. it was coming home to you.

the worker snapped you out of your trance, you tore your gaze away from leehans arms as the two of you made eye contact. “god sorry, we’ll get out of your hair” leehan said, standing up from the table. you followed, grabbing your drink, making your warm hands feel instantly cold.
“have a good night!” leehan said to the workers, holding your hand in his as the two of you walked out and onto the sidewalk. you took a sip, glancing back at his arms once more. it wasn’t often leehan wore tank tops but whenever he did it really did him wonders sometimes.
“yn? you good?”
“what?” you snapped out of your trance again, looking up at him. the two of you continued walking, the pace slowing down now. “i asked how yours was, i know you wanted to try the new one i got” you stared at him blankly for a moment and then shook your head, “gosh oh um it’s.. no it’s good we can switch if you want” you sputtered out, making him furrow his brows as you swapped drinks with him.
you took a sip of his, glancing over at him to see him sip from your straw. you weren’t sure why your heart was beating so fast in the moment. you knew your face was flushed, probably pink as well. he looked over at you, mouth full of boba as he lifted his thumb to wipe away some tea from your bottom lip, you held back from taking his thumb into your mouth.
“have you been working out more?”
leehan almost choked on the sip in his mouth, forcing to swallow it and then coughing. at this point the two of you had already reached the car, you leaned against it, rubbing his back as he finished coughing.
“what kind of question is that?” he snorted, leaning on his side against the car to look at you, his arms crossed. “this,” you grazed his arm, making him look down and smile softly. “you usually only wear long sleeves or t shirts, but i like this” you cleared your throat, feeling your face get hotter as you spoke.
leehan only smiled, raising his eyebrow slightly. “so no tank tops? is that why you’ve been distracted?” you smiled softly, opting to look away from him and instead looked down at the ground. “i wouldn’t say no tank tops at all” you hummed, making leehan hum in agreeance, a smile heard in his voice. you looked up again, meeting his gaze.
”so what, you like my big strong arms?” he teased, making you laugh aloud now. “i knew this would happen!” you groaned, making leehan laugh now. “oh you just love that your boyfriend is so big and strong!” leehan sang in a teasing voice, making you shake your head.
“do not!” “do too!”
the two of you stared at one another and started laughing, leehan shook his head, looking at the ground now. your heart was still beating so fast as you glanced at his arms once again, why did you keep doing that? leehan looked up and caught you in the act, you immediately looked the other way and cleared your throat. he stared and smiled, setting his drink on the car roof and taking yours from your hand and setting it down next to his. you looked at him again, watching as he stepped closer, breaking the short distance between you two.
“you actually love it dont you” his voice was just above a whisper, you looked up at him as he caged you between him and the car, both hands now holding your hips. “like.. in a joking way you know” you breathed out, feeling your face heat up again. leehan lifted up a hand to hold your cheek, “mm i think you love it so much you’re practically running a fever” he smiled, glancing down at your lips then your eyes again.
you laughed nervously, trying to escape but leehans hand held you down, gosh he really was strong. “just admit it” he smiled, his breath hitting your nose, you looked up at him and finally found your voice, “yeah maybe i do” his thumb grazed your bottom lip again, this time he let it sit there, your mouth slightly open as if waiting for him. he moved his hand from your lip to your cheek, holding your jaw as he leaned in, finally interlocking your lips.
you moved your own hands up to hold him by his neck, moving closer as your lips moved together. he tasted sweet, like a mix of your honey milk tea and his mango drink. you tilted your head, making room for his tongue to dance with yours. a kiss that started slow quickly became fast and messy. you whined as you put a hand on his chest, pushing back softly giving him a sign to pull away. as he did your hand found its way to his arm, stroking it up and down, like it had a mind of its own.
“what now?” you breathed out, your lips still plump and pink from his kiss. leehan pursed his own lips and thought for a second. “i’m gonna drive us home, you keep your hands to yourself in the car, and when we walk through the front door you can do whatever you want with my arms” he smiled, making you snort as you pushed his face away. “good idea no?” he grabbed his drink from the car roof and you shook your head, “ill try my best to keep my hands to myself” you grabbed your own and he smiled, giving you a quick peck.

ᥬᩤ a/n : hey !! this is like my first fic ever, I've had this thought for a while, I decided to write it out. hope you enjoy it <3
﹅ AT SOME POINT,
there was no denying that something was happening between the two of you.
Myung Jaehyun had only spent two years in the industry, but he thought that was enough to understand how things worked—what to do, what not to do, how to behave in front of cameras, how to get the gist of everything.
You had debuted way before him, so you had even more experience.
But fans were confused about why you were making it so obvious. Don’t get them wrong—they were eating up the interactions (most of them, at least.. the other half was torn between insulting you, him, or both…). They just thought you were being careless.
You didn’t even notice at first. You felt at ease with each other, interacting the way you normally would. But sometimes, the simplest interactions say more about a bond than anything else.
The new boy group was still fresh. BOYNEXTDOOR was the talk of the whole building.. heck, the entire city, with how many posters were up promoting them.
And as good seniors, you had one job: to promote them too. It went from filming TikToks together to talking about their music during lives.. just enough to stir things up and bring attention to them.
Myung Jaehyun was known as an extrovert by now, loud in a good way. Filming with him wasn’t as awkward as you thought it would be.
“Myung is such a unique surname,” you start, both of you waiting for the set to be ready. What better way to pass time than to start a conversation?
He smiles softly, nodding like he’s a little proud you noticed.
“That’s why I use my full name.”
“You chose well. It sounds good.”
“Thank you, senior.”
“Oh, please,” you say, slightly bothered by the title. “Just call me by my name. No need for formalities.”
You still had to keep up appearances in front of cameras, but in a more private setting like this, there was no need.
“Then call me by my name too.”
“Noted.”
It started to feel like you were cursed by Myung Jaehyun’s presence, everywhere you went, he was there.
Going up the escalator? There he was (with his bandmates, but that’s another story). You smile awkwardly, greeting them politely.
“We listened to your new album. It’s really good,” Jaehyun says, bringing up your latest comeback. His bandmates glance between the two of you, confused about why he’s suddenly speaking up.
“Oh, really? Thank you. We put a lot of work into it.”
“You can tell,” he replies calmly. “In a good way! Not in a bad way.. no, wait! ”
He starts rambling, realizing how it might have sounded, and you can’t help but laugh, amused.
“That’s good to hear. Thank you, Jaehyun.”
You step off the escalator, waving at them before leaving.
Cafeteria? He’s there.
Free time at the terrace ? He’s there.
Standing in line behind you, sitting two tables away, it didn’t matter.
At some point, you guys started interacting more.
He'd come over to your table, and you'd talk about something random, he'll smile when you get in the elevator at the same time as him and ask about your day or your plans. One day he grew bolder and asked for your number.
Safe to say that you found yourself getting closer to him. Not that you regretted it in anyway, he was funny, smart, and really good with his words, he knew how to get you to smile or get all flustered, he knew how to confort you when you were feeling down.
Your conversations grew deeper. You started seeing each other outside of “office hours”—his words, whatever that meant.
And yeah…
You thought the two of you connected so well that it was impossible to hide it. Not from staff, and definitely not from fans.
You weren’t really dating... yet.
You were stuck in that awkward phase where you both knew how the other felt, but no one had confessed.
Jaehyun might be socially clumsy sometimes, but he wasn’t stupid. Confessing could put pressure on you, and he didn’t want to add stress to your already exhausting schedule.
And you hadn’t said anything either… so that must mean you didn’t mind, right?

You smile softly, reading the flood of comments.
“How are you doing? I’m really happy today. I went out, and it was so sunny ! it actually made me feel better after all the snow.”
You switch between looking at yourself and reading the chat.

The live goes by a blur, and you just hope you don’t receive a text from your manager, telling you that you fucked up.
Ending the live, you’re quick to latch on your phone, skipping through the notifications.

Whoever planned this, truly is testing you, because who in their right mind would put the topic of gossips together in a setting like this. You should really check that with your manager, how can he complain when you misbehave when he gives you opportunities to do so?
You arrive on set, and there he is. Already laughing with staff.
Maybe he actually didn’t know, just like you didn’t know before arriving on set, and finding the black haired guy standing proudly already laughing with some staff member.
“Oh Senior!” he calls, putting on a show in front of the others, “ I didn’t know you’re going to be here ?”
Jaehyun just jogs up to you, now proudly standing in front of you
“Yeah I didn’t know either” you answer truthfully,
“This is the schedule you texted me about earlier?”
You nod your head , afraid someone has heard him. They shouldn’t know you have his number, or that you text one another, or that you even know each other.
People talk a lot, and you’re sure there's going to be someone from the staff screaming how he saw the biggest scandal of the year after this set is done: and it’s new that you and jaehyun are dating, i mean not 100% true, but not 100% false either, you know ?
“We’re ready to film guys” yells the director, signaling for you guys to get on the set.
It’s the worst, I mean it could’ve been worse than this if it was just the two of you, but thankfully there’s few other idols and public figures, so it wasn’t really focused on you guys.
The whole point of this variety show, is to split into themes and do a bunch of activities, like guessing the song/dance, guessing idols or actors from a small portion of their face etc, so it wasn’t too bad, really funny experience if you take out the fact that you were really stressing out over Jaehyun.
He was in your team, what are the odds am I right?, he kept to himself mostly but there would be instances where he’d guide you somewhere, or he would keep joking with you, and you hope the constant interactions won’t trigger your fans.

the ride to minju's dorm didn't take long, since you had the luck of living nearby—or as close as someone could be to a kpop group's dorms, at least. it only took you around 20 minutes to drive, not even bothering to think too much of what the hell could your girlfriend be up to.
minju was an amazing partner. the best you could ask for, really. but sometimes she's so hard to read! you never know if she's about to say the most lame thing ever—no offense to her—or the most criminal thought ever brought into this world. no middle ground.
that's why you were a little nervous as you waited for the elevator in the lobby. what if she burned down her kitchen? oh god. you're not a firefighter. but she hasn't done anything yet.
maybe she is planning to burn down the whole building...
fortunately for you, the elevator opened it's doors before your thoughts wandered too far away. stepping inside, you scrolled on your phone a bit—reading some dumb tweets and letting out a few chuckles as you finally got to her floor.
you hesitated a little to knock on the door, doing it after a few seconds of contemplating what could be going on inside this place. after four knockings, minju opened the door, her hair a total mess and a bleach on her hand.
“... minju?”
“oh, hi. you came. here,” the door opened wider as she stepped aside so you could go inside. the nervous expression on her face was very noticeable but you tried to ignore it for her sake, “uh, sorry this is very random...”
minju was feeling a little too hyper aware now of how much of a mess her dorm was. there were a bunch of hair products scattered around the living room—brushes, three different brands of bleach and five tones of pink dye on her table.
“i was looking through some pinterest pictures and i kind of wanted to dye my hair?”
oh. so that was it?
you blinked at her a few times, as if processing her words, relief spreading inside you as you got the confirmation she isn't going to commit a felony. not against the law, at least. maybe against her manager.
“and i'm guessing this was an impulsive decision and you have no idea how to actually do it?”
given the way minju pouted after your words, looking at you with that big eyes of her, you've guessed the answer was yes.
sighing softly, a smile grew on your face. if she wanted to change her hair, who are you to deny helping? “alright. come on, i'll go get some gloves from your bathroom. you can sit anywhere.”
her face instantly lightened up at your words, nodding in a timid way, making her way to the chair she had placed near the table, waiting for you to come back.
you had some difficulty finding the latex gloves but they were eventually found—you didn't want to have your hands dyed pink. only the hair was enough.
making your way back to the living room, minju was still there, zoning out while staring at a random spot in the wall. she looked cute like that. minju jumped as you booped her nose, laughing at her reaction.
“hey, i need to know how you want your hair.”
“uh... i don't know. just do whatever you think may look good?”
“you're trusting my taste a little too much.”
she didn't answer that, instead just giggling and leaning her head back a bit so you could start working on her impulsive idea. knowing her more soft personality and her own tastes, you opted for a more lighter tone of pink.
you reached for the bleach, giving minju a quick warning about how her roots might burn a little bit, before starting to apply it for each strand of hair.
the atmosphere was comfortable. minju was almost falling asleep just by the touch of your fingers in her hair, making sure to be as gentle as possible with how you applied the bleach. at some point she begun humming one of her group's songs—pimple, you've recognized it. it was one of her favorites.
after some time, when you were finally done with the bleach, you tapped her shoulder to get her attention, “should i put something on the tv while we wait?”
“huh?” minju opened her eyes, looking around for a second and then up at you, “ah, sure. do you wanna see our last vlog?”
you nodded with a grin, “that sounds good.”
you dragged a chair to be next to your girlfriend, careful to not accidentally touch her bleaching hair since you didn't put anything to protect it.
the two of you giggle as you watched illit's latest vlog, paying attention to every comment minju made about what they did at every single place shown in the video. it was fun to just have these private moments with minju, even if it was around 9pm and you were helping her dye her hair.
once almost an hour passed, you told minju to go wash her hair, so you could now apply the dye. that process was faster than the bleach, as you two waited for another 45 minutes in silence, watching more vlogs.
now, you were drying minju's hair, a little eager to know her reaction. would she even like it? what if she hated it and decided to never ask for your help ever again?
“okay... aaaand... it's done! you can turn around now.” your voice was quiet, finally done with the hair.
minju hesitated, slowly turning her body to look at the mirror. her expression was blank for a second, and you were already mentally preparing yourself for a possible breakup over pink hair dye, when she touched one of the strands.
“i... i like it.”
“you do?”
“yeah. i feel pretty.”
giggling, you kiss her cheek, watching as minju's face suddenly matches with her new hair color, “you are pretty, silly.”
