There is a reason for this though!
The original tweet summarizes it pretty well. Fanfic tends to be popular among certain types of neurodivergent people (aka people most likely to read excessively as a child, and have burnout as an adult) for the same reasons that we tend to hyperfixateāneurochemical signaling (I hope Iām using that phrase correctly). What I mean is, for people who are really dependent on changes in dopamine/serotonin/neurotransmitter levels, who have low levels or wonky neural reward systems (perhaps the most common types of neurodivergence)ā¦people like us rely on dependable external sources of those neurochemicals. In order to function, we spend a lot of our free time trying to level out our brain chemistry using things that can reliably bring us a steady stream of joyful moments (rewards) without costing too much of the mental effort that is already in short supply.Ā
significantly:Ā the investment of reading has to be balanced with a steady āreturn on investmentāāand this return has to start fairly quickly. because again, we donāt have a lot of attention/energy to invest on tiring things. we have perpetual ālow batteriesā in that regard.
that doesnāt mean these stories are āsimple,ā or that they lack complexity or valueāonly that the reward has to come in short regular intervals, and it has to have a low āupfront cost.ā these stories are onlyĀ āeasyā to read in the sense that the effort we put into them is rewardedĀ in a timely manner.Ā which is why fanfic stories are so perfectly formulated for neurodivergent readersāthey are often beautifully written, but skip a lot of the upfront costs (of introducing new characters, of world-building, of getting the audience emotionally connected to the story elements).
the nature of fanfiction is that the reader has a pre-existing relationship with this world and these characters. thatācombined with the shorter average length of ficsāmeans that fan fics very quickly start rewarding the reader in a way that traditional fiction struggles to. thatās not a bad thing! and maybe itās something more traditionally published writers should be paying attention to.
Fanfic, as a genre, has been uniquely helpful and accessible to many neurodivergent readers who would otherwise struggle to immerse themselves in stories. Iām glad so many of you have found a way to love and enjoy reading again! The important thing is that you are spending time inside stories you loveāthe way those stories are published or presented to the world is just one detail. The fact that you find joy in the process of reading (or listening!) to storiesāthatĀ is what matters.

people in fanfiction are so good at identifying v specific smells. I literally struggle to identify vanilla when Iām sniffing a candle labelled āVANILLAā how are these kids getting woodsmoke, rain, mint, and a whiff of byronic despair from a fuckin tshirt
Once I read a fic where they were like āhe tasted likeā and Iām expecting the typical formula (1 cooking ingredient + 1 natural phenomenon + āsomething uniquely [character name]ā) but instead they said āhe tasted like mouthā and it was one of the greatest fic moments of my life

How fucking annoying is it when you feel so restless with creative energy but you canāt decide what to do with it and when you finally try to create something it comes out shit so you just give up and sit there being all creatively annoyed and jittery.
1 - Decision Making Fatigue is a thing. --> Make a list of possibilities. --> Use a random number generator to pick something off the list. --> If you hate the idea cross it off and generate a new number. --> Continue until you either find a project or cross off the whole list. --> If you cross off the whole list pick a random short story prompt, write for five minutes, and call it a good work day.
2. Yeah, of course your rough draft sucks. Itās supposed to. --> Let it suck. --> You can fix it in edits.Ā
3. When youāre stressed you arenāt unbiased about your work. --> Donāt judge your work while your are actively working on it. --> Remember to drink water, take your meds/vitamins, eat something, and get sleep. --> Double-check to make sure the restless creative energy is not displaced emotional worries over something else. If it is, displace with intention and let the worries go into your work. You shouldnāt keep stress in your head, put it on a page, or canvas, or in a carving, or a meal, or something. Get it out and let it go.
4. No work is ever wasted. --> All time spent planning and creating is useful in some way.Ā --> Failure means you tried, which is good. --> Try again. Fail harder. Fail better. --> Keep going until you like what youāre making.
5. Love yourself enough to allow yourself to not be perfect. --> Seriously.Ā --> If this is a struggle I highly recommend seeing a doctor or therapist about depression. --> Because you are dang lovable, my friend. You rock. You do great things. Iām proud of you.

If a website has a paywall, like New York Times, DO NOT use the ctrl+A shortcut then the ctrl+c shortcut as fast as you can because then you may accidentally copy the entire article before the paywall comes up. And definitely don't do ctrl+v into the next google doc or whatever you open because then you will accidentally paste the entire article into a google doc or something!!!! I repeat DO NOT do this because it is piracy which is absolutely totally wrong!!!
Also do NOT append "12ft.io/" before a URL ! Typing an URL like this https://12ft.io/<URL> will redirect to a site that would break the display of the page by removing the paywall !
Honestly it's kind of prohibited to mash CTRL+P before some paywall windows can load in to get a PDF of the article. Really shouldn't be done tbh very dangerousš¤·šæāāļø āļø
I got an ask from someone who felt timid about drawing curlier hair and wanted some advice! This is by NO means exhaustive and is mostly just my thought process for my own stylization. There are tons of resources for drawing more textured hair, so for this I just wanted to focus on curls. hope it helps!
Oh my gosh. I just found this website that walks you though creating a believable society. It breaks each facet down into individual questions and makes it so simple! It seems really helpful for worldbuilding!
Heads up that this is a very extensive questionnaire and might be daunting to a lot of writers (myself included). That being said, it is also an amazing questionnaire and I will definitely be using it (or at the very least, some of it).
