My beautiful mother-in-law suffered a stroke in the beginning of March... sadly, she's in the U.S. while her children are in Germany and the UK.

Despite doctors not thinking she'd make it through her initial emergency surgery, she persevered and might be able to leave the ICU soon.

Neither her nor any of her children have a lot of money, but we are now faced with the hospital bills as well as future bills to cover her recovery.

Once she gets the okay, we'll fly her out to Germany, where chances are that we'll be her main caretakers for the rest of our time together.

Please help make it possible for us to get her home. Please help this wonderful, stubborn little lady recover as much as possible and fight for the life she definitely isn't done living yet!

Here’s the thing I feel like a lot of folks don’t get: I’m not trying to forget what you said. Honestly, I really tried not to. I can’t control what I do and don’t remember—forgetting things just happens. It’s annoying for you, I know, but for me it’s distressing as hell and when you make a big deal out of it rather than just reminding me you make me feel ashamed. I’ll remember that, at least.

It costs you nothing to be kind to people with memory problems. Please. It’s scary enough without people treating memory lapses as a personal failing.

The myth I think that annoys me the most is “you have to forgive them in order to heal” and when people push back you get “oh no no! You forgive them for you not them”.

Still, a no from me. I didn’t forgive him for me. So many wanted me to to make things easier for them. Me not forgiving was my way of standing up for myself and saying “enough”. I wasn’t going to do things to make myself small. To make things easier for others. Not forgiving was me making my journey about me.

I think it’s so valid if forgiveness is a part of someone’s journey. (Just please make sure it’s because it is for you and not what others say you should do).

But for me? Not forgiving was a part of it.

I just want you to know that you’re valid if you forgive and you’re valid if you don’t. Both are okay.

regressing less comes with a certain feeling of grief for me... I miss the little kid I could be, while at the same time recognising that this is a wonderful step in my healing journey. I know it probably doesn't mean I will never regress again (at least at this point in my life) but it definitely feels a little heavy..

the way sibling abuse is erased constantly and treated as "normal"... to all my fellow survivors of sibling abuse: I see you. You didn't and don't deserve this. You shouldn't have been made to feel unsafe in your own home. You shouldn't have to feel like people laugh about your abuse. You shouldn't feel like you're not allowed to talk about it. I'm sorry this happened to you.

Also any attempts I made to find resources on sibling abuse as a kid only returned results for sexual abuse.

The culture is so blind to sibling abuse they don't see it at all unless it takes the form of sexual assault.

Important addition, ty. That being said even with csa between siblings people often don't (want to) see it. Remember Lena Dunham openly admitting to 'experimenting' on her baby sister as a kid? I even had therapists in my psych ward, who knew my history, tell me that it's normal for siblings to "experiment".

So yes, sibling abuse of every form gets overlooked, ignored, joked or explained away. But there definitely is something to be said about how normalised non-s*xual abuse between siblings is.

it’s so fucking weird how incest is only ever discussed as a joke or as a fetish. in reality jokes about incest, to me, are jokes about childhood sexual assault… over a third of cases of CSA are perpetrated by family members. it is difficult to determine how many incidents of incest involve an underage victim given that only an estimated 30% of incest cases are reported. the way people discuss incest directly contributes to this underreporting and it’s really not a joke

i just wanna write my thoughts down but like basically most incest jokes perpetuate the idea that incest is only something that happens to “backwards” people. incest victims already deal with incredible amounts of shame and self-blame surrounding their trauma and these jokes are not fucking helpful. another thing about these “cousin-fucker” jokes is that they often seem to imply that both parties in an incestous relationship are consenting adults which is just so plainly not true. incest is abuse!!!! i’m not saying no other types of incestuous relationships exist or that incest cannot be discussed. just be fucking cognizant of how people around you who could have suffered sexual abuse at the hands of a family member feel when you make your stupid jokes or when you fetishize these relationships. these discussions are often held and these jokes are often made with 0 regard for actual victims of incest. there is a difference between a nuanced exploration of how incest affects families and the people (often children) who victimized and fucking wincest fanfic please be so absolutely serious right now
