It’s time for the Series Three version of my Sherlock Chemistry Minimalist Graphics! Just as before, the chemicals were chosen based on relevance to the episode and the colours based on synesthesia.
The Empty Hearse
Octane—A crucial part of gasoline, very flammable. Relevance to the episode: John Watson was put into a bonfire, which was set alight with the help of what else? Gasoline.
The Sign of Three
Ethanol—Drinking alcohol. Relevance to the episode: Sherlock and John got very drunk on John’s stag night, the wine was one of the tip-offs of the titular “sign of three”, and, of course, was in the champagne undoubtedly served for the happy couple.
His Last Vow
Ionone—A fragrant chemical, found in flowers and essential oils. Relevance to the episode: Claire-de-la-Lune, the (fictional) perfume that heralded a bit of a shock for our favourite detective and that helped usher in a new age in the trio’s relationship.
