A Young Daughter of the Picts, Steph Wilson
A Young Daughter of the Picts, attributed to Jacques Le Moyne de Morgues, 1580s
"There is an impulse in moments like this to appeal to self-interest. To say: These horrors you are allowing to happen, they will come to your doorstep one day; to repeat the famous phrase about who they came for first and who they'll come for next. But this appeal cannot, in matter of fact, work. If the people well served by a system that condones such butchery ever truly believed the same butchery could one day be inflicted on them, they'd tear the system down tomorrow. And anyway, by the time such a thing happens, the rest of us will already be dead.
"No, there is no terrible thing coming for you in some distant future, but know that a terrible thing is happening to you now. You are being asked to kill off a part of you that would otherwise scream in opposition to injustice. You are being asked to dismantle the machinery of a functioning conscience. Who cares if diplomatic expediency prefers you shrug away the sight of dismembered children? Who cares if great distance from the bloodstained middle allows obliviousness. Forget pity, forget even the dead if you must, but at least fight against the theft of your soul."

Im sorry but it is so funny how people outside of tumblr view us. Like why are the tiktokers treating tumblr like some professional ass website you need to do extensive prep before you begin posting on. And the follower farming advice is so fucking funny to me when this is the website where people actively hate getting new followers

from the website: This print is part of Lattimer Gallery's Through the Decades: Late 20th Century Haida Printmaking show, taking place online from March 15th-29th, 2025.
This charming print depicts four Frogs perched atop plants which bend under their weight. Frogs are generally seen as great communicators and usually represents a common ‘voice of the people'.
From the Columbia University 1968 archive (Personal recollections of the 1968 student uprising at Columbia University by Frank da Cruz):
… a concerted effort was made to break into and rifle through President Kirk's many file cabinets and turn up evidence of covert links with the war machine and defense contractors, large corporations planning to divide up the spoils in Viet Nam, etc, all of which were to be found in abundance. These were photocopied and later published in the East Village underground newspaper, Rat. Some items were picked up by the mainstream press, resulting in some embarrassment among the rich and powerful, which quickly passed. Because we broke the file cabinets, we were charged with Malicious Mischief, a felony, in addition to the two standard felonies, Criminal Trespass and Resisting Arrest. Plus a misdemeanor, Disorderly Conduct.

The May 3-16 issue of RAT, containing the material we found in Grayson Kirk's filing cabinets, prefiguring in a small way Daniel Ellsberg's Pentagon papers published in the NY Times three years later, demonstrating that we were right and everybody else wrong.

Jewish Holocaust survivors suspected of being Soviet sympathizers were subject to the 1952 McCarran-Walter Act.
“The Immigration Nationality Act of 1952 gives the secretary of state the authority to revoke visas from foreigners deemed to be a threat,” wrote Axios, citing senior State Department officials in its reporting.
The 1952 law, also known as the McCarran-Walter Act, codified immigration restrictions of “subversives” and communists. The act’s quotas and ideological litmus test were widely understood at the time to target Eastern European Jewish Holocaust survivors suspected of being Soviet agents.
Nevada Senator Patrick McCarran, the law’s architect, used the “canard that Jews are disruptors” and “subversive rats that need to be kept out,” but with a new Cold War twist of portraying Jewish immigrants as Soviet agents, according to David Nasaw, professor emeritus at CUNY Graduate Center.

are all the break-ups in your poems real? by Aimee Nezhukumatathil
Maybe they realize many illnesses, including norovirus, influenza, and 49% of COVID infections, can occur without any symptoms, and they know that infectious diseases still spread even without symptoms or before symptoms develop - so they don’t assess whether they are ill or infectious to others based on how they feel, especially at a time when multiple viruses are running rampant.
Maybe they are an ally and advocate for groups who experience health disparities, and they know women, older adults, chronically ill and disabled, those with mental health concerns, LGBTQIA+ and trans people, and racial and ethnic minorities are all at higher risk for more severe health impacts.
Maybe they know that the scientific review claiming masks were ineffective at preventing illness was retracted, but the retraction/correction didn’t get as much press as the initial “gotcha” headline, and in fact there are multiple meta-analyses showing the effectiveness of masks at preventing airborne respiratory viruses, including recommendations that good-fitting respirators are used since vaccinations are inadequate.
Maybe they know norovirus, COVID, influenza, tuberculosis, measles, and other infectious diseases are airborne and spread by aerosols that can linger in the air for hours, and that handwashing or sanitizers are insufficient.
Maybe they are aware that there’s a measles outbreak, and that it still carries many risks, including immune amnesia/the immune system forgetting how to fight off illnesses it had once learned to fight.
Maybe they know that the COVID virus has been found to have multiple impacts to the immune system.
Maybe they realize that the more times someone has COVID, the risk for Long COVID increases, that even mild COVID infections from current variants are still causing Long COVID and other health problems, and that people still get these long-term, often disabling conditions whether or not they have had vaccines.
Maybe they don’t believe it’s ok to leave anyone behind and know everyone deserves and has a right to exist in public spaces, and they see continued masking as a way they can actively embody and advocate for this.
