I have also been thinking a lot about Robert's teen years, his fathers death and having to carry the responsibility of mecha man while also having to live up to his family name.

I did actually HC that for a while Robert didn't feel like he was grieving his father enough or that he wasn't sad enough about his death, that then extended to having him feel like a bad person/bad son for it. He hears all these people talk about how their parent's death ruined their lives, while he doesn't feel that way. We never actually see his reaction to his father's death, but that's what I pictured in my head.

Yeah yeah I totally see that!! Like the game literally opens on him saying “Obviously I love him”, like he’s trying to convince himself. Robert clearly feels a lot of obligations to his old man, but we as the viewer are only shown how little the guy existed to Robert. And Robert being in denial of how much that fucks him up!

Deeply curious of that brief bit of time when Robert was a teenager before his father died. He had to have started training by then, which means he should've spent time with his father learning how to operate the mech suit, how to navigate complicated field situations. Maybe he was training with Chase or even Elliot. Did he go to highschool? Was he homeschooled? Was he getting closer to the Brave Brigade now that he was coming into his own as an adult? Was he happier than when he was a kid or was he more miserable?

I dont know if this is a hot take or more a default consensus, but I don't think Robert got taught his self-destructive tendencies from his father. Robert admitted that he never even had an hour long conversation with his dad before he died, so I think Robbie's greatest influence on Robert was his sheer absence.

I think Robert's self-destructive approach to Mechaman was a result of decisions he chose to do purely of his own terms. Robbie had a team of superheroes for support, and he clearly had enough of a work life balance to support a kid in a big suburban house.

I think Robert's lack of self-respect was a volatile cocktail of 15 years of grief, trauma, initial teenage hormones, and the classic Robertson need to do good. I think he decided to pour everything into being Mechaman all on his own.

Concept where post-canon, Mandy and Robert are both obstructed from going out into the field as their superhero selves, amulet keeping Chase alive and the mech suit being under lock and key by SDN respectively, so they decide to team up and investigate crime together. This collectively gives Z-Team a heart attack, as they realize they now have to keep an eye on two feral normies with a penchant for danger and a lack of self-preservation.

There's already been a lot of fics where Z-Team tries to keep an eye on their rabid dispatcher, but I want to include Mandy in that dynamic because she's the exact same way. She literally drove a car into Shroud's mech, she and Robert would be scoping out gang bases and abandoned warehouses together, they'd enable each other so hard.

I think a substantial part of the tragedy surrounding Robert Robertson's character is that he didn't start off as a shell of a person. He didn't always live in abysmal conditions, he didn't always sleep in a lawn chair.

Robert is extremely socially competent, it's why he works so well as Z-Team's mentor. He wasn't just their guide to heroism but to non-criminal society.

Through this it's clear Robert understands what "normal" is.

Sure Mr. "Wtf is a PTO" is inexperienced to a 9 to 5 work life, but he knows how to act appropriately around other people. He knows what normal is.

Which means he knows that his hollow grave of an apartment is not normal. He didn't choose that because he didn't know better, but because he was grounded down for fifteen years into this near nothingness.

A substantial part of the tragedy of his character was that Robert didn't start off this way, but he willingly gave up aspects of his life he knew brought basic comfort to continue being Mechaman.
