Headcanons based on my Medieval Research P.2
I think we can all agree that botw Zelda is probably one of the best Zeldas in the entire franchise. Mostly from the fact that she has one of the most interesting personalities in the game, and is very developed as a character.
Zelda is also very courageous, and branching off of my previous thought of bravery being important in Hyrule, she is very respected because of that. It was her courage that may have awakened her sacred power, as she was willing to sacrifice herself for the hero.
Zelda’s courage also shows when she constantly abandons Link in an attempt to be alone, despite the growing amount of monsters across the land due to the coming Calamity. She doesn’t care, and only lets him tag along after almost getting assassinated... Seems a bit more foolish than brave, though.
On the subject of Zelda’s personality, she really likes flowers. As Link and Zelda’s friendship grows, she will spend her free time in the several different biomes of Hyrule, and study the animals and plant life under the sure protection of her knight.
Although we all know that attractiveness is the last thing on the list that makes someone interesting, Zelda is very beautiful. We hear this all throughout the game, even from people who haven’t even met her before.
I like to think that, since Hyrule is obviously very advanced, at least on a social perspective, the Hyrulean princesses never felt comfortable having suitors... so that’s not the case for Zelda. Though it would be an understatement to say that she doesn’t have the usual admirers here and there, for instance the Skeikah poet...
Something I see a lot of is how people romanticize Zelda’s intelligence. They say it’s “cute” how she likes reading, or how she “lights up” when studying something. However, Zelda brain reaches far more lengths than that.
She was the one who brought functiality to the Divine Beasts, and figured out how they work. While Robbie worked on the guardians, and Purah studied the Sheikah slate, Zelda was by far more advanced in her work. Not to mention that it’s canon she knows and can identify most of the wildlife in Hyrule, and has more wisdom than every Hylian combined.
She was the literal leader of the Champions, not just a helpless Royal for them to protect. Even without her sacred powers, Zelda’s genius mind reaches far beyond any educated scientist and mathematician. Hypothetically, if Stephen Hawking and Albert Einstein had a child, she would be it.
Zelda doesn’t really cry either, at least not in front of people. At her mother’s funeral when she was 6, she barely shed a tear, trying to compose herself in front of the hundreds or thousands of citizens that attended. People have complimented the King on her strength and composure; little do they know she ran straight to her room that night and locked the door, turning away any comfort or help her maids or knights offered her.
In the game, Zelda was the one who hand sewed each Champion garment. Her work was even complimented by Revali. I wouldn’t be so sure about singing though, but she would usually play small instruments when she was alone, as a way to ease stress and take her mind off things.
Although she was a very respected princess with great dignity and kindness, Zelda often isolated herself from big social gatherings and people. From when she was only 7, she already had immense pressure and responsibilities, something that her subjects would often comment on. Urbosa was even worried for her, and was sure that Zelda has never been truly happy, despite the late Queen’s wishes for her daughter.
Zelda was only sixteen, and although many real life princesses get betrothed young, the King may have wanted her to focus on praying. Plus, arranged marriage was considered inhumane. However, he wouldn’t even think about forbidding Zelda from falling in love, and will definitely not behead the guy involved. Zelda is far too stressed as it is, and happiness may do her well.
Though, since Zelda practically had no time for romance in her life, her newfound feelings for Link were really confusing. After the Yiga attack, she was constantly thinking about how harshly she treated him. But in true respectful fashion, Link forgave her, as he is well aware of the pressure she is under.
It’s safe to say that Zelda isn’t good at flirting (which may probably explain why she never picked up on any flattery from admirers). She would often compliment Link, and wanted to spend more time around him than usual.
Many people, including the King, picked up on the fact that Zelda may be in love, as she wouldn’t leave the castle without Link, and would always invite him to her room to read or play games. Link, of course, was very oblivious to all of this, but liked the fact that she didn’t berate him for doing his job anymore.
Since she knew she wasn’t good at teasing or flirting, she turned to impressing Link with her knowledge and ingenious wisdom in order to get his attention. In the game, the only one Link opens up to is Zelda, and he ends up caring for her a lot, so it may have worked I guess. The more time they spend together, the more Zelda falls for him and the more comfortable Link feels.
Zelda’s feelings for Link are canon, though whether or not Link returns them is unknown. But it is also true that after he wakes in the shrine of resurrection, he says Zelda’s voice is beautiful, tries to impress her with his improvement and growth, and wants to see her smile again.
