Am I tweaking or are the parallels to the Odyssey super visible in the Aeneid Book 5 specifically with Poseidon/Neptune and Aphrodite/Venus' plea.

Like Poseidon in the Odyssey makes a specific point of sparing only a handful of men, including Odysseus and his "closest" companions (Take Eurylochus' position how you will) whereas in the Aeneid, Neptune kills only one to spare the many (R.I.P Palinurus you would have loved satnav) one that is given a voice multiple times by Virgil compared to a majority that are only given a name, symbolic that there is some degree of closeness between Aeneas and Palinurus). Like maybe Virgil was cooking something beyond Roman Empire propaganda for Augustus, shame he never finished it, he would've loved ao3, Virgil R.I.P.

Or maybe this is just another thinly veiled reason not to attack children...

Aeneas really drew the short-straw in genetics, compared to half of the demi-gods who fought in the Trojan War.

Achilles of course is an absolute beast of a fighter, (aided of course by the fact he once had bathtime in the styx) but even without that was an absolute tank of a man.

Helen's got her natural beauty and also she was a swan, I'm just saying if Poseidon can make his son into a swan, and Zeus has swan babies, then Aphrodite absolutely could've given Aeneas a chance to be a swan.

I've lost my copy of The Windswept City but oh my gosh I just remembered the book existed like waking from a fever dream, first of all its wild my father decided to read it to 5 year old me, but I think it's the equivalent of a God chucking a child into a pit of snakes only for that child to grow up as a professional hydra slayer.

Would recommend The Windswept City, sure its been almost a decade since I read it but it stuck in my mind as a good retelling, definitely catered to kids but y'know it's about the killing of a people from Helen's perspective so it is what it is
