Hey I was wondering how you shaded/rendered, I think it looks super cool and I need some tips for myself :)
sorry i didn't see this earlier!! I don't check my inbox a lot and it took me a bit to put together image examples
I hope this answers your question well but if you have anything else you're wondering about I'll respond. I'm actually really surprised you asked this since I've always thought my shading was pretty minimal
First just to figure out the light direction I draw arrows of where the light is coming from then use that to block out kind of where I want the shadows with a multiply layer on a low opacity
it can be as messy as you want just as long as it helps you get the direction down though I usually just get lazy and end up using this only for harsher lighting
For colors
I choose a main color that I'll use throughout the drawing and for shading. It doesn't really have to fit perfectly into the character you're drawing's color palette, I usually go for purple or blue tones depending on how warm or cool the character's colors are. Heres the piko drawing I did as an example:
The overlay color On the left is the one that I centered the drawing around. Even without using the overlay I nudged all of the colors closer to that blue which I tried to show using the color wheels. Even for colors like the skin tone that'd look silly if I turned them fully blue I still moved them closer to blue.
For this one, I used the color on the right on a multiply layer with 37 percent opacity to shade. pretty similar
For highlights i just colorpick whatever area I'm adding them to then up the saturation and make the color lighter
I think for tips I'd say to try and shade with a color that fits with the color palette you have , and try to have a strong direction when shading! its also good to experiment with shading methods and coloring! I usually will go through a few different color palettes and different light directions before I choose one
In the first piko image you can actually see that the shading I'd blocked out I didn't actually do in the finished one
I'm kind of bad at the second one and tend to do very little strong shading
i finished this 2 days late and then i FORGOT TO POST IT YESTERDAY so now its 3 days late ToT but anyways HERE IT IS!!! THE ANNUAL SILVER BDAY REDRAW!!! as always prev years below for comparison:
