One thing that the stranger things fandom does -specifically a certain subset of the fandom that shall not be named- is removing El’s agency.

There’s this consistent claim that El “needs independence”, but in pretty much every season she’s given an independent arc. szn2 she escapes and finds Kali, szn3 she breaks up with mike and hangs out with Max, szn4 she chooses to go with Dr. Owens to get her powers back. she’s clearly very independent at this point and to pretend like she’s still the scared little kid she was in szn1 is completely asinine. she’s constantly infantalized. “does El even understand what Will means when he comes out as gay”, do you think she was born fucking yesterday? Her favorite show is Miami Vice which had multiple episodes focusing on the gay community, she lived in california in the 80’s which had a huge gay community but she also went to public school where we can assume she heard people being openly homophobic or possibly being out themselves.

Plus, there’s this throughline of removing her autonomy. Like she continuously has plots where her and mike are either separated or they have a miscommunication which is a focal point of every season and yet she continuously chooses him. not because she has to, because she wants to. Or claiming that it’s messed up that the party still calls her “El”. Not once have we seen El complain about her name. Even when she’s in california and she could just decide to go by “Jane”, the Byers call her El. she introduces herself as El. She has no connection to the name Jane outside of it being her legal name because she was never called that. she wasn’t raised by her mom, that was taken from her, but she never makes the choice to go by Jane. Because as much as you might not like it, being Eleven is part of her story. And through the party she gets to reclaim that, she gets to make it hers. Because she wasn’t “El” in the lab, she became “El” when she escaped. And to claim that her friends, her family, her boyfriend are all bad people for not calling her something she never asked to be called is insane.

By the time we get to season 5, El is a 16 year old girl. A 16 year old girl with a favorite tv show, with friends, with a family, who’s saved the world multiple times and yet everyone acts like she can’t make her own choices.

"mike was so toxic to El!" "will was better to El!!" will was the worst, male centered pick me in the WORLD. First of all, while El was already going through the struggles of feeling different and isolated due to the amount of bullying she was going through. Yet will couldn't do nothing but say "I'm here for you" then not do anything, he didn't even try to tell joyce or jonathon, then when HER BOYFRIEND came to visit, and she was lying to Mike he basically said "since I have feelings for Mike and you're lying to him when he doesn't deserve to be lied to, I'm gonna make you feel bad about it and then disregard your feelings". What about that screams "good brother"? Then he legitimately only helped them with their relationship because he wanted MIKE to be happy and put MIKE'S feelings above his, then when he realized that while El was fighting to save Holly's life, he could possibly make a move on mike?? He practically JUMPED at the opportunity.
