Be sure to check Alexander Clemmer's stunning work in Still Waters Forget at the Alliance Francaise. The exhibition is up until December 20th!
Whether deserted or populated, the shores of the Great Lakes offer a sublime spectacle of colour, light, and shifting shapes of sands and clouds. At first glance, this appears to be the subject of the photographs of Alexander Clemmer. The paradox underlying his work is that as a history enthusiast, Clemmer longs to gaze upon events that occurred decades before the invention of photography, such as the naval battles that took place during the War of 1812 between the United States and Canada. The viewer is held in the dynamic between the serenity of the image comprising Still Waters Forget, and the terrible historical narrative that each image title conveys.
The island dweller is inextricably connected to the sea. The only way the island dweller can connect to the ocean is through the mediation of the coast. The coast grounds the island dweller, it keeps him safe, and without the coast the island dweller is lost into the expanse of the sublime.
Our next exhibition Free Wifi will be opening October 30th and our reception will be on Thursday October 31st (yes, that's Halloween night and yes, we expect to see you in full costume!)
Free Wifi explores the experience of viewing art online. The exhibition has two components; first, an online exhibition allowing anyone to submit content that is instantly uploaded and displayed within a virtual gallery space. Secondly, a series of site-specific installations set within the physical gallery space (IMA Gallery, 80 Spadina). The installations act as an interface between the physical space that one inhabits and the digital space of the online exhibition. Through the mediation of these components the viewer is granted access to information that is otherwise unattainable. The combination of these two spaces emphasizes the experience, both physical and digital, of viewing art online. Free Wifi aims to highlight the merit of, not individual artworks, but rather, the collection of posts that accumulates over time in a phenomenon Gene McHugh terms the stream . Each submission added to the exhibition initiates a new relationship between itself and the uploaded pieces before being subsumed by the flood of the stream. Moreover, Free Wifi is a product of the availability and ease of viewing art online today. No longer does an image have to become a print on the wall to be ordained an artwork.
