It was raining hard this day. You and Kenji founded a little shelter waiting for the rain to calm a little.
You and he were helping on a little local farm, a cow got sick and the vet needed help and counted on Kenji’s strength. You helped with the little things, like bringing the meds when the vet asked for it.
Suddenly, you both heard a thunder, it was so loud that you needed to cover your ears, but when you looked at Kenji, he was kneeling and cowering, shaking. You never saw him that way, the boy is usually positive and fears nothing but this time, he looked like a little animal, just like the ones you two use to help.
“What’s wrong?!” You asked with a worried look on your face.
“Ahaha” A little nervous laugh left his mouth. “It’s no big deal.”
You held out your hand to him, he smiled a little bit and took it while getting up.
“You know, it’s not like I’m defeated by the rain.” He tried to smile.
“You’re very strong, Kenji.” You reassured him. “Both outside and inside.”
“Thank you!” He held your hand stronger. “I know the rain will pass soon!”
“Yes! And I’ll make you a big meal! You deserve it, you worked hard today!” You said opening a big smile, he nodded excited.
Thus, another thunder stokes, again, he was super scared and hugged you. You petted his head trying to reassure him that he’s safe.
“Can I ask you something?” You said but silence reined. “Why you are so scared of thunders?”
“Oh… It’s nothing…” He tried to make the situation lighter. “It’s just… that when I was little… I feel into a hole in a raining season. It made really difficult for people to find me, so I stayed there for hours, alone, in the dark, cramped and crying.” He hugged you closer. “The thunders seemed so close, nothing felt safe. So, when I’m outside and a thunder strikes, I can’t help but act this way.”
“It’s okay now.” You petted his head once again. “You’re safe now.”
You both stayed there, like mother and son until the rain went away. He happily took your hand while going home, still a little scared but showing a much lighter aura.
“So, what do you want to eat?” You asked with a soft expression painting your face.
“Oh! I want a lot of meat.” He opened a genuine smile. “With rice too!”
