Headcanon that while Kaeya DOES speak Khaenri'an, it's like a rough modern version so every time he talks to Dain and Dain switches to Khaenr'ian, it's like talking to Shakespeare.

Dain: "’Tis passing strange to espy such monsters in this region"

Kaeya: "Can you say that again. Slowly."

And Dain just switches to common because he cannot be bothered sometimes

Him and Diluc encounter a ruin that has ancient Khaenr'ian written on it's walls and Diluc just stands there waiting for him to translate

Diluc: "...So?"

Kaeya: "Give me a minute oh my god. you try decoding ancient Mondstadt after not speaking the modern version consistently for 18 years"
