The Ken Doll Effect

This isn't my usual thing but, I just want to talk about something I've noticed in Fandom spaces for a bit. For a bit of context I've been in Fandom spaces for over a decade but I've never truly interacted with anyone in it till now.

So, I've noticed this thing lets call it the Ken Doll Effect. Where a Fandom will have a character that's a "Barbie" of sort. These characters are well liked, well respected, and they tend to have actual effort put into their character when it comes to fanfics. (You can also usual know if a character is a "Barbie" based on how many different characters they are shipped with)

Every "Barbie" needs their respective "Ken" so this were the main observation comes in. "Kens" tend to be a second thought when it comes to shippers mainly because the "Barbie" isn't getting shipped with the "Ken" because the person likes thier dynamic or feel as though they have good chemistry. But, rather because thier favorite character needs a boy/girl toy so they don't feel lonely. (In some cases it's also because they use the "Ken" as a self insert of sort)

This is where the Ken Doll Effect mainly comes in. Characters who get labeled as the "Ken" tend have thier main characteristics traits reduced into bare bone aspects of themselves. Such as a upbeat character being reduced to being "happy" or "they could never harm a fly thier a sweet baby." On the other hand the "Barbie" gets to have thier character built up, people are much more willing to allow flaws with this character.

The "Barbie" can have a character outside of the "Ken" they are being shipped with. But said "Ken" can't be a character outside of "Barbie." Why? Because "Ken" only job is to be a accessory to "Barbie", without "Barbie" th "Ken" is nothing.

(Im not necessarily calling out any specific ship. This is rather something that I noticed with multiple different ships and many different Fandoms that it sort of started being a partten of sort. I've also seen this in canon ships so it isn't just Fandom ships)

Kinda sad when in superbat fanfics they make Batman a 3D character but Clark a 2D one

Because Superman, regardless of my multiple Batman post, is my favorite superhero

Like yeah he is this godlike hero always smiling and shining, so trustworthy that seems he can’t do wrong

But he is also kinda sassy and mischievous, he really tries to save everyone but sometimes he can’t just stop and think, he needs to act asap so he can makes mistakes, maybe this course of action wasn’t the best, maybe he went to far with his comments or couldn’t manage well his emotions and got in the way

He is so charming in the cute farm boy way, and also very cunning in his journalism work and also kinda silly eating steel bars and in one comic when he got q kryptonite scar in his face he decided to use a whole ass mask instead of a simple bandage, wich ok it works out at the end bc with Clark he just needed to put the bandage to cover it but still

He has so much into his character of finding his place in the world while not losing himself with the “who I am? Clark or Superman? Which one is the act?” And since he is kinda emotional dealing with all this stuff of guilt if he couldn’t save 1 person and stuff

He tries to be so perfect, if he isn’t people died, but regardless of his origin he is only human

I imagine immigrant children can identify with the whole, I wasn’t exactly born there but I still learn from their culture since my blood is from there but at the same time I identify myself with this country since I lived here all my life, but since I have this ethnic characteristics people just can’t believe it and doesn’t see me as a local, trap in both worlds

And we all know Dick is a retired crash out. On a scale from 1/10 how fucked would the villains be?

How fucked would Jason be?

How fucked will Stephanie be?

Ooohhh this is a good question ദ്ദി(ᵔᗜᵔ) . I feel like Dick is going to be 10x more of a crash out than in the mainline universe. Let's say his backstory stays the same just no batman in his life. That means Dick is going to have much more of a reason to try to end someone's life. I think the main villain that will make him do is Deathstrok. (Than again I doubt Deathstroke is even going to half as normal as his mainline counterpart)

So I'll say 5/10 simply because no villain in this universe is normal.

Jason and Stephanie on the other hand, I'm low-key scared for them. If they struggled in the mainline they are going to go through hell in the absolute line. I think both of them are going to be influenced or involved with a villain before getting into the batfam. Think about it, I feel like the best thing to take away from them would be their opportunities. They both were given opportunities to have a better life. So taking that away would take a good part of their identity away from them.
