Hang on, correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't there a whole thing a little bit ago about "support tumblr because we're against selling user data"? Surely their "licensed network of content and research partners" are paying Automattic for this data, which is obtained from users? Like I know it's not exactly the same as selling personal information like most sites do but this still leaves a NASTY taste in my mouth
Not enough people supported them. I remember some time ago an employee/ former employee shared the figures for ad-free subscribers and they were depressingly low. So now Tumblr is likely using one of their only other viable money options

Well, idk if you've noticed... but tumblr absolutely has exhausted MANY different options that all failed spectacularly since they are always out of touch and also have a user base that thinks it's funny to be as unprofitable for them as possible.
Dont get it twisted, i also hate this AI bs, and I want it gone. But this obviously isn't tumblr's first option. They've been trying— and failing, for so long.
