My sister pointed something out to me recently that this is a great example of. She compared leftist/woke/cancel culture to purity culture (typically those are opposing things but let me explain).

Anything you do wrong is a sin that must be atoned for. You must always have the moral high ground or else you need to repent and be forgiven. It’s uncomfortably similar.

I agree that we gotta bash JK Rowling and other transphobes, and not support her financially, and talk about the problematic ideas in Harry Potter. I don’t agree that you’re not allowed to engage with the fandom or enjoy something from your childhood bc of other factors. I’m not speaking as a mega fan who engages with the fandom or media anymore, even. I have a close trans friend who is obsessed with the marauders and engages with the fandom. Obviously they don’t support JK or her views. And neither do I. I do think things don’t have to be so pretentious though, when talking about what someone can and can’t enjoy privately.

So my sister wants to start sewing more, because

a. She’s 5′ 11″ and can never find pants long enough for her legs or shirts long enough for her arms.

b. She hates synthetic fibers as much as I do and it’s difficult to find natural fiber clothes that aren’t made of cotton

c. She’s a biologist and would physically fistfight microplastics if given half a chance

So her gift from mom and dad for her birthday was a sewing machine. Not a super expensive one but a good solid serviceable one.

And recently she asked “So where do I GET wool or linen and thread that isn’t polyester” and mom was like ‘go ask your sister’

I don’t know a lot about sewing, but I want to make or have my mom make some linen pants & shirts for when I’m watering, because it gets to 105 here and we have mosquitos so I need to be covered. What type of linen do I buy? Also, linen pajama shorts, yes/no?

thinner line art (you think thats thin? go thinner….)

sketch, then do a cleaner sketch, THEN start finalizing

THUMBNAILS

color research, picking a set palette or light/dark for each work

you like that pose? redo it one more time

USE A DAMN REFERENCE

do not rely on stylization as an excuse for anatomy

draw the goddamn background you coward

just draw the hand- a bad hand is better than a hidden hand

the rule of thirds WORKS

take a considerable break between sketch and lines/paint

know that art takes longer as you get better at it

draw the seams on clothes

stop aiming for accuracy and focus on fluidity and motion, accuracy will come with practice of those two concepts

just…do the chiaroscuro. just DO IT. no excuses it always works

stop making excuses, make yourself an art schedule/set weekly(or daily) art goals and just DO IT.
