“isn’t there like medication to help with that ??”
“I don’t need any of that. I just need people to stay away from my memories.”
“How do any of you feel safe then? What if they decide they don’t like us and start killing us off or something?”
“I’ve been here for a few months and that hasn’t happened. It’s always someone else you have to look out for.”
“well that’s fantastic, good to know you don’t have short term memory loss.”
“for the first time in a while, so yeah that’s a good thing.”
“Do you know who moves us?”
“No. I don’t think anyone does.”
“That sounds terrible. Why is it common? Is there a virus or something?”
“No, not a virus. People whipped our memories before sending us up in the box. It’s hard to explain.”
“You have no other memories of where you were before?”
“No, but where I originally come from that’s nothing new. It happens to everyone.”
“You’ve been here before?”
“Stonefield? Yeah, it’s one of the places whoever runs this place has moved us. Surprised they moved us back here.”
“Back here.. well at least I actually remember this place.”
“I just want them here… or at least know that they’re safe,” sonya would trade anything just so that they’d be here or to know that they were safe and made it to paradise with group A. hell, she’d probably trade herself so they could all be here and safe and without the threats of the cranks. a thought occurred to sonya that she didn’t love aris because she didn’t know what love was… but she had to. she knew that she loved him, she could feel it in her chest and in her stomach whenever aris walked into the room and whenever aris was mentioned in conversation and whenever something reminded her of aris. after she was done talking and voicing the thoughts she’s had for weeks (maybe even months at this point) she frowned. she watched aris and watched as he thought and digested what she had said but she couldn’t read him to see if he also felt that way about her or if maybe he felt something for someone else or maybe he felt nothing for anybody and didn’t love her?? sonya started to worry that she had wasted something as amazing as their friendship just because it was eating her up from the inside. the pair of them, as clueless as they were about this and as inexperienced they were they still managed to do something without accidentally biting the other or accidentally hurting each other. sonya had her kiss (or, er- makeout session) months ago with a handsome sokovian (though he had left after they had formed a tight friendship, to her dismay). sonya’s arms wrapped around aris, pulling the two of them much closer together as they kissed.
“I know, I know.” ari said softly before shaking his head, looking down at the ground. he wished that the rest of their group would show up, not the rest of group b. although he was happy to know that group b would be safe, maybe him happy. but there was one thing he didn’t want to change, the fact he got to be here with sonya, that he found the courage that he never knew that he had to make the one move that had always been on his mind when it came to sonya. but he knew as he pulled away from her that he was going to have to face whatever she had to say, or whatever her reaction was. his eyebrows shot up as he felt her arms wrap around his neck, a small smile grew on his lips as his nervously resting his hands on her side, keeping her close to him as he leaned back down to leave a soft peck on her lips.
“Well, if we’re in agreement on that do you want to help me make sure the others don’t get on one. I’d rather not see any of them get hurt.”
“Yeah, I will help you out, Newt.”
“yeah…” sonya frowned. the fact that she had left aris when she had promised him that she wouldn’t… and that she had no choice in leaving and was simply just taken. she never wanted to leave him. sonya nodded, knowing that aris was right. “I know- I just can’t help but worry about them…” it was like roles had been reversed and sonya was the one seeking comfort and aris was comforting her. “like… people here… I- I don’t know, it’s stupid, I shouldn’t have even brought her up,” sonya knew how much pain aris had been in after watching rachel die… but she couldn’t hold the feelings in anymore, they were driving her insane and making her go crazy. “aris— I… I love you and… and if you don’t love me back then that’s cool too.“
“i know. you care for them, it’s natural for you to be worried about them.” he said with a smile as he looked down at the girl, shaking his head. there was so much about sonya that he admired, she always found a way to surprise him. maybe it was her ability to be strong but still be scared and worried at the same time. or maybe it was because she was graceful, kind-hearted and gentle but also tougher than any guy he had met---- though he hadn’t met a lot of guys expect for group b. “it’s fine, i don’t mind talking about her, just i let her go.” he said with a shrug before furrowing his eyebrows together as he listened to the girl, tilting his head a bit. he tried to wrap his head around everything she had said, he wanted to speak, he wanted to tell her that she wasn’t the only one who felt those feelings but he was completely speechless. he couldn’t find the words to speak, he couldn’t find the right words to say to her and he knew that if he didn’t say something that it would upset her, even if she refused to admit it. tightening his jaw, he moved his hand onto her cheek, his thumb ran along her jawline before his fingers moved into her hair, pulling her face forwards as he leaned down, his lips finally melting against her. everything he felt was new to him, every single movement he made was new, he didn’t know what he was doing but something inside of him knew it was the right move--- a move that he had been wanting to make for almost a month now.
“Suppose it’s best to move on. Especially now you’re away from all that.” She didn’t know how safe Hogwarts or Stonefield was but she hadn’t come across anything not to her liking just yet. “But that’s no way to treat kids. Or anyone for that matter.”
“Yeah well maybe someone should have told them at one.” He said under his breathe, tilting his head as he looked at her before changing his facial expression, smiling a little.
“i have,” sonya said quietly and buried her face in his chest. “when i woke up in that random room after the party and hurt??? those hunters??? i don’t know what’s safe anymore.” sonya frowned, she didn’t want to argue with aris, but thinking about the girls. HER GIRLS. she would give up any of the chocolate and any of the comfortable beds and pillows just so that her girls would be safe. “we’re here… we’re safe,” her voice wavered on the ‘safe’ part. “but the girls… what if- what if they’re not?? i don’t know what happened after that explosion…” sonya frowned and looked up at aris. “oh- right- i just thought… you and her…” she said and looked away quickly, her insecurities coming out at full force.
“i understand but i’ve been here and nothing has happened to me. i think it’s safe.” he mumbled under his breathe as he leaned down and lightly kissed the top of her head before looking up at the sky. “they are tough girls. sonya, you have to know that better than anyone, they can handle themselves. i have no doubts that they are safe and are out there looking for us.” he told her, trying to make her feel better. but he couldn’t deny that he wasn’t worried himself, he wanted to know where the girls were, if they were safe and where they have been at, what they had gone through when they were separated. “her and i what?? what are you talking about, sonya? she died. there is no her and i. beth ended that years ago.” aris said, the memory of beth and rachel still haunted aris in the back of his mind, but he didn’t carry around that sadness anymore, he learned how to move on with his life but there was still bitterness in his voice whenever he spoke of what happened.
“yeah,” sonya said a bit flatly. aris wouldn’t understand. the only person who could understand would be harriet or beth and neither of them were here right now. “it was different before- before everything… before we found a way out… frankly we were trapped but we had a system and- we survived and we had a reason for running,” sonya still woke up at the crack of dawn to run but the only meaning behind that was stress and an obsessiveness that she couldn’t get rid of. sonya knew that aris could never understand the sense of community she had found with the group… or what happened to her months or so prior to aris showing up. sonya just wanted her girls back and harriet. she missed them all so much; even beth. she missed them all. sonya nodded, grinning. she knew what she was feeling as she smiled at him. that feeling in her chest; it was familiar to her in no ways at all but she knew what it was. she was hesitant to do anything about it. aris still loved rachel, right?? didn’t he?? weren’t they like thomas and teresa?? with the telepathy?? “so, I saw rachel… did you see her?”
he could hear that she was upset and he was the one that caused her to be upset, it was his fault. he didn’t know that such a question would cause so much hurt, but he should have. he knew how close sonya was with the girls, he should have known better. “doesn’t mean that it was better. i haven’t been hurt here. i haven’t watched any friends stab each other here.” he pointed out before shaking his head. “here is better than back home. you’re the one that was so bent on me believing that. but not that i do, you’re the one that’s unsure.” aris frowned as he looked at the girl, trying to figure out what changed exactly. she was the positive one. she was the one trying to make sure that he knew that it was safe here. she was the one telling him that everything was going to be okay. “rachel? she’s dead. i saw her but the rachel i knew died a long time ago.” he said, his voice falling flat as his light eyes looked over from the blonde with a quiet sigh.
“Of course they think they’re the good guys. People like that always do. That’s so fucked up. What’s the good in putting you through all that just being you’re immune? Surely they should be keeping you safe, not pushing you towards danger.” Shaking her head, she couldn’t quite believe what she was hearing. “Just because it’s in the past, doesn’t make it okay. Since I’ve never heard of the flare, I’d have to agree with them.”
“I know it doesn’t know make it okay, but I can’t just dwell on the past. Or at least my past.” He shrugged his shoulders with a small, forced smile. Since coming here, the last thing he wanted was to dwell on the past, especially now that some part of him actually felt safe. “Yeah, you’re right but I guess they just wanted to see how immuned we were or something? I’m not sure.”
“Okay, that was a weird experience.. never been on a moving staircase before. Is it possible to be stairsick? Because I don’t feel too good right now.”
“I think anything is possible, especially at this place.”
