I DON'T CARE WHAT YOU'RE DOING STOP AND READ THIS
Ok Dr. Phil’s wife, Robin, (yes groan, but listen up) has this new app out (iPhone and Android) that’s for people in abusive relationships. It’s called Aspire News and it’s disguised as a regular news app, but when you go to the “Help” section of the app, it leads you to domestic violence resources and also has a “Go Button” that when you press it, if you’re in a compromising situation, alerts local authorities as well as local shelters and starts recording everything that is going on.
Now, if you’re looking up resources on the app and your abuser is near, simply press the X button and it brings you to a random news page. Same goes for the actual foundation site.

Consistency and Diversity
Here are two more pieces I've done for the comic I'm making. My two greatest struggles drawing for it are consistency and diversity. That sounds paradoxical so let me explain. I have trouble drawing characters consistently which is an issue when you need to draw a character multiple times and have them be recognisable. I also have trouble drawing characters with many different expressions and in different poses. Making a character recognisable with different expressions kind of combines these two issues. I drew these two pieces to work on my consistency. I used different pens for each one so they look slightly different because of that as well. It was also interesting to draw characters that are interacting physically. It really makes you think about weight and balance etc.
So, what do you think? Please feel free to give any constructive feedback on the pieces or tips you might have for these issues!
Portal Person
Here is one of my first drawings of Portal Person who I'd like to include in a comic I'm making. I feel like I should use another name but I've started calling him Portal Person in my head and I've grown a bit attached to it. I like that it's pretty awkward. I've made him a guy on purpose to challenge myself. I always find myself drawing girls, perhaps because I am one. I used a stock photo of a woman to draw this pose so he's ended up looking somewhat ambiguos, which I also kind of like. The stock photo was from senshistock on deviantart. They have a wonderful gallery which is very diverse. I particularly love their action and weapons stock photos. They are invaluable to a person like me who wants to draw action scenes, but doesn't quite know how someone looks when swinging a staff!
Thank you for putting together such a helpful website. I have loved comics and manga for ages, and enjoy writing short stories and drawing so I though I'd merge this altogether and make a comic book series! This will really be for my own personal enjoyment and I'm not really sure if I'll ever publish it although that would be cool. I love stories with strong characters, plots and themes. Could you give me some suggestions, or a list of links for advice on these things? Thank you once more!
Sorry for the delay in answering imogenconstance I’ve been out of town for a few weeks.
If you like writing and drawing, then comics are the perfect media for you!
I don’t feel that I’m qualified to offer you any advice on writing stories, plots, and themes, but I do have one piece of advice that has served me well so far: Tell the story that you would want to read. If you stay true to that, I think you’ll be okay. (you should still look up writing advice from great writers though, it’ll help.)
While we’re on the subject of making comics, I strongly encourage everyone to make comics for any reason (especially for your own personal enjoyment,) However comics take a lot of time and effort to make, so once you make them I think you should share it with the world! Publish it!
It’s easier than ever to publish your comic and I’ll give you some resources:
Ka-Blam.com
For my money they’re the best for printing short books. Individual comics that are 40 pages or less. Their sister company IndyPlanet.com gives you the best deal on selling your book online. (better than amazon, and other similar companies.) Best of all they’re print on demand, so you can print one book or 1000 at a time. It’s really affordable, I can’t recommend them enough.
They also offer a digital download option for your book, if you don’t want to deal with all that messy paper. Again, I love this company, can’t recommend them enough.
CreateSpace.com
This is an amazon company. So the advantage to them is when you’re printing graphic novels, or trade paperbacks, they’ll give you the best price on printing. They’ll also automatically put it up onto Amazon.com for you with no extra charge. That makes you’re book very accessible world wide.
The disadvantage is that Create Space isn’t really designed to accommodate comic books or any books that have a lot of pictures. So they don’t have a standard “comic book” size. You’ll have to reformat your books to fit their specs. Usually this isn’t a big deal, but for some reason amazon seems more difficult than it should. The other disadvantage is that they take a huge percentage of the sales on Amazon. I guess it’s the cost of having one of the world’s biggest book distributor sell your book, it just kinda stinks.
ComiXology Submit
ComiXology is the #1 digital distributor of comic books. On their website and app you can buy nearly any comic book that’s out there: Marvel, DC, IDW, Image, and even a ton of manga. They’ll distribute your book too!
The only catch though, is unlike Ka-blam and Createspace, they won’t accept anything you send them. There is a review and acceptance process. They’re not incredibly strict, but your book does have to be of a certain quality. No typos, no spelling errors. The artwork has to be of a certain standard too.
But once you’re accepted, your comic will be released on a Wednesday along side Batman, and Spiderman. I think that’s pretty cool.
I really like this company because their love for comics really shows. I hope that attitude continues now that Amazon has bought them. So far I haven’t seen a significant change, and I hope it stays that way.
The disadvantage to ComiXology is they take 50% of the sales, which is kind of a lot. Apple doesn’t even take that much for their iTunes sales. But considering that ComiXology converts your comic into their patented guided view free of charge, I’m okay with that split.
Wordpress and/or Tumblr
Make your story a webcomic! You don’t have to print your book, or get it on comiXology to share your story. Start a blog on wordpress or tumblr and post your pages there. I’m sure people will happily read it!
So I hope that answers your question a little bit, and helps you get your story read! If you or anyone else has a question about making comics, art, or anything else please feel free to ask! I answer all my questions!
and most importantly, Make Comics! Not Excuses!!
Thank you for the advice, thegreatshono. I did not really seriously consider publishing my comic until I read your post. I would definitely consider going to Ka-Blam.com now! I'm still in the planning stages but I have loads of ideas, so I'm trying to balance writing and planning shorts and general world and character designing. I'd just like to share this to my followers, particularly if you love comics like me, or want to get published! thegreatshono has a very helpful website so please check them out!
Support Agent Carter!
I love Agent Carter, and I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one. The show has intelligent writing, important messages, interesting chracters and a conspiracy that is keeping me awake at night. Agent Carter herself is amazing in so many ways. I aspire to have her courage, intelligence and grace. Although we might not live in the Marvelverse (or do we....?), we can still help Agent Carter by giving her our support and make sure she has many more adventures! Please leave your feedback to abc on the following link. You can do this if you live in the US or outside of it. http://abc.go.com/feedback This page also has more suggestions on how we can back up our favourite Agent! http://agentcarter.net/want-more-agent-carter-its-all-down-to-you/

Watch this powerful video on child marriage in Chad made by UNICEF in collaboration with electronic music producer RL Grime .
Education is a way out. This is a lovely video, not just in terms of its techniques but especially how it uses this to tell its story. The use of backwards and forwards mirrors the regression and progression of society for its girls. It's a very inspirational video in many ways, and a great example of art telling a story.
i know their music styles are incredibly different but i feel like if hozier and florence welch did a song together a rip in the universe would tear open from the inside of my skull and the machinations and deepest secrets of the universe would spill forth in a primeval deluge from which humanity would ascend its mortal shackles and spiral outward in a never ending cycle of the purest nirvana
For me it would have to be Bastille and Florence + The Machine!
