It had been way too long since Quinn had spent an evening out, just for fun. As much as she loved the children she was a nanny for, much of her time was dedicated to them. She did have some friends that she had met in Los Angeles, and some nice neighbors as well, but she didn’t go out often. This evening was extra special because she had the chance to see two of her friends from back in Lima perform, and she made sure to cheer and clap extra loudly for both Marley and Sam. They had been as amazing as expected, and when the show ceased, Quinn felt a spike in her nerves. She was thrilled to have the chance to catch up with Sam, and she was grateful that their rocky past had been forgiven. That said, it wasn’t unusual to get butterflies when in his presence. Even years now, way beyond their time as a couple.

Seated at one of the tables near the front, Quinn toyed with the straw of her cocktail as she every so often peeked up in search of the familiar green-eyed blonde. Finally catching Sam from a distance, Quinn flashed a brilliant grin and waved him over, hoping he’d taken notice.

Every time Sam got to perform, the butterflies in his stomach were there until he stepped up on stage at which point adrenaline was sure to kick in. Singing was where he really felt at home, and tonight was even more important because not only he was he taking to the stage, so was Marley. This showcase was a big deal for both of them, and he owed his friend for getting him included in it, supporting her and being a friendly face in support of Marley.

It was just as important to Sam that Quinn had decided to take in the show too. Though they hadn’t seen one another in ages in person, as soon as he saw her there up front in the audience it was difficult to focus on anyone else in the room. Maybe they hadn’t been a couple in several years now, but catching that familiar brilliant hazel gave him the same jolt it did back in high school all that time ago. Her smiling face reassured him as he sang and played his music, and once his time was up he walked off and stayed in the wings of the stage to support Marley who came on after him. She was stellar, and once Sam let her know he and thanked her again, he slipped out into the main part of the club to catch up with Quinn. Right away she caught his gaze and beckoned him, and Sam was happy to oblige. “Hey Q! I’m so glad you made it out tonight! Thank you for coming.” He reached out to give her a big hug before taking a seat beside Quinn at the table. “It’s so good to see you.”

Oh more than just something though, Q. Good then, I hoped you would! Ah well, that’s okay and thank you, maybe it was a little jealousy, I dunno. And aw, you know how to make a guy feel good about himself, thanks for that Quinn. Some things really don’t, because you still manage to light up any room you’re in too. ;) That really works, but sometimes you also gotta give yourself a break as well. I think it’s half full at least, personally I prefer a glass fully full though.

I think you’re being too generous, but thank you. I mean, I could see it. What guy doesn’t wish they were like Sam Evans? Just being honest, but you’re welcome, Sam. You were always pretty good about making me smile like that. ;) I know, and I’m trying to be better about that. At least more so than I was back in high school. Fully full? I like that.

What do you do to deal with nerves before a gig? I feel like I’ve tried it all, and taking deep breaths only helps a little.

I drink.

Kidding! Well, mostly. I find doing a shot sometimes helps, but that’s not something I’d recommend for everybody though. If you can though, just try to take a couple of minutes for yourself somewhere quiet, and try to envision things going well. Sometimes I’ll just step outside, or even a quiet corner or something, but I find it’s helped me a little.

Perhaps. I mean, if I was that bad she probably would have quit a long time ago. She works hard and I try to praise her for it. Not too many bosses can say that. Thank you… and absolutely. The most humble, obviously. ;) It’s a saying anyhow– but I’m not exactly sure where it came from, so there’s no telling! Maybe because sometimes even people close to you don’t want to hurt you. But it’s easier to hurt yourself.

Always, Sam. Well then they should have used the left over to buy a fresh gift card at least. Right by the check-out counter– or at least they used to. It’s been so long since I’ve been there I could be wrong. Not at all. The candy lasts a day, but that washcloth… may last a lifetime. Or at least much longer than ten minutes. Really? I’m sorry; I’m sure they missed you. Yeah? That’s funny; Marley and I were talking about going back and Mike sort of did too. Sounds like we all have the same idea. Thank you, and they did! We got facials and watched cheesy hallmark movies. Nothing super fancy, but it was fun. How is your music going?

See that’s what I’m thinking, so the fact she’s stuck around means you’re doing something right at least. Definitely not, some of my bosses never gave me any kind of praise, can you believe that? The guy at the Dairy Queen in Kentucky was a total jerk. You’re welcome... Yes! The humblest, even. ;) Oh good then, that’s more than enough for me then. Man, that’s really true, with other people it’s easier to spare their feelings. With yourself, it just doesn’t come up and the boom... hurt.

Aww. You’re probably right, but they just didn’t see it that way. Or didn’t have time to, maybe? Aw, I totally missed out then, I’ll have to check next time. Hmm, that’s true though, and I do still have it so... maybe money well spent. That’s okay, and I’m sure too, I spoke to them at least. Really? Oh cool, actually they kind of mentioned it as well, I guess we really were all on the same wavelength! It could be a lot of fun though. And you’re welcome, oh that’s awesome! It’s going pretty well actually, I had a couple of gigs lately, and Marley said she’ll be able to get me in on an open mic thing at the Lexington coming up too.

It is but I wouldn’t have said it better. That’s just how it works. Quinn’s mentioned it to me as well. It would be great if we could all go back together. So far I don’t think anyone’s picked dates but I’m down for that. It’s actually been a while since I went back.

You never know, you could have though. Oh yeah? I think so too, much easier to travel in a pack, plus that way it’s a lot harder to get bored too. Not that I’ve heard either, but I can be open to whenever people want to go. You too, huh? Man it’ll be a little weird, but I’m looking forward to it.

Rock on, dude. And I hope they can too, they deserve a longer vacation. Aw man, yeah? I don’t think so, for some parents at least. It’s tough isn’t it? You kinda feel bad for them, just not bad enough to want to move back in. Circle of life I think, one day we get to feel bad when our kids move out. I’d like to, maybe next month or something? Quinn and Marley have mentioned maybe going back home to Lima for a bit, I’m kinda half considering tagging along and then a little detour back to see my folks maybe. But nothing’s set in stone yet though.

Not only is it more fun, but it’s more convenient especially if it’s a longer ride and people can take turns driving and relaxing. Of course. Hey! That reminds me of something. My publisher is hosting an open mic type of thing at the Lexington next Friday, you should come and do a couple of songs!

Oh yeah it will, exactly! See, two brains here thinking as one. And I bet she’ll be even more excited to see you than you will her. For sure though, teamwork makes the dream work. Great then!

Thank you, Sam. It was the least I could do for her. I try not to be a demanding boss, but I’m sure there have been emergencies in which she had to hustle about. Aw, shucks, Sammy. I guess so. But you know me– I’m incredibly humble. ;) They say we are our toughest critics, right? Thank you though. That really means a lot.

That’s sweet of you to say. Wait– it was already used some? That’s just, wow. Lazy. Now I have to ask who got you that. At least you bought something sensible though. I probably would have gone for the candy at the check-out counter. Quiet, huh? Does that mean you didn’t go back home? Mine was nice, thank you. Mom and Frannie came up here, so we had a girls’ holiday. 

You’re welcome! Oh sure, and I bet she realizes that too, it has to come with the job doesn’t it? Most importantly, you recognize that and wanted to do something nice for her... that goes a long way. I’m just telling the truth though, but I’m happy you think so. Oh yeah, they’d used a few dollars off the top of it to get something for themselves, but they didn’t see it as a used thirty dollar gift card, it was an almost new twenty-five dollar and fifty cent gift card. Somebody who’s dog I walked a few times for them. THEY HAVE CANDY THERE? Aw but now I feel like I wasted it. Yup pretty quiet, and no actually I didn’t get to go home this year, just Zoomed with the fam. But I might try to make a trip back there soon-ish. I’m glad yours went well, and oh yeah? That’s awesome then, did they have a good time out here?

We went to Exposition Park to see Space Shuttle Endeavor and we also visited the Getty Center. They only stayed a few days but I think they loved it. We try to do something different whenever they visit. How are your parents by the way?

Oh wow, yeah? Sounds like fun then, and if they’re into sight-seeing you’re right, there’s only so much they can do in a couple of days but you obviously made the most of it. Mine are good, but I think struggling a bit with empty nest syndrome now that all three of us kids are out of the house now. That’s more of a hunch, though, they’d never say outright.
