Okay so I was thinking about last night’s episode and how the potential of romance between Mack and Elena was so obviously pushed, and it’s got me thinking about this show and romance again.
What is up with season three and trying to pair everyone off? Like it’s already been too much. Now Mack, too? But see, that opens a whole other can of worms for me. I’m a FitzMack shipper - which is not the problem here really, since I’ve already determined if the show won’t even give them a friendship this season they don’t have any chance of being romantically involved. The problem is all the queer baiting that went on with Mack in season two.
There was so much queer baiting with him and Fitz, and they had such a connection that season. It was kind of amazing. To me it was like, the closest this show has gotten to giving us something canonically gay. So those scenes have certainly impacted my opinion of Mack’s character, in that I think it would be amazing to act on all those queer vibes and just make him gay.
But then they push this totally random, totally early connection between him and Elena for not much of a conceivable reason. Why not Joey and Mack? Mack already had plenty of gay vibes (and it’s certainly not just me who felt that) and they had Joey come out so what would have been wrong with that?
It’s like the writers were like, “oh hey, we need diversity. Hm, I know! Joey. Joey can be gay. DIVERSITY~”
“Huh, what do you mean give Joey a canon gay relationship? Isn’t just saying he’s gay enough? I mean, we can’t actually make him get WITH a guy – that would be like, totally weird and gay. We can’t do that. Let’s introduce another hetero romance!”
Like? Am I the only one who feels like they’re just going to clog the show up with straight relationships and not ever get Joey with anyone? Sure, having an openly gay character is great and I like the representation no matter how small, but it wouldn’t kill them to follow up and actually get him with someone, especially if they’re going down the soap opera path (which they basically already have this season) in which every damn character needs a canon romance. I don’t think it’s too much to ask.
Maybe I’m jumping the gun on this whole Mack and Elena thing, but it seemed pretty obvious to me that they were hint-hint-nudge-nudging us towards that possibility with how much they flirted. I just happen to think that Joey and Mack would have made a nice pair and something different, but instead, as always, Mack just turns out to be another case of queer baiting to keep us watching without ever actually giving us something non heterosexual.
I mean, it’s really not too much to ask, is it?
