Literally i feel like ive been waiting forever since the trailer

Technically WE get to create our own essay question based on a critical lense (i chose post colonial but there was also feminism, marxism, ecocritical, literary value and narrative) in fact our summer hw is literally 1. Read the book/ poetry (bc we also have to do an essay for a collection of poetry. Im doing Emily Dickinson poems!) 2. Create a few questions that we can pick from and maybe 3. Start the first draft. Also i forgot to mention, another reason why i thought i wouldnt be able to do tpw is bc i wasnt sure if it was classed as adult fiction. Its in the exam board spec that the text we do HAS to be adult fiction and not YA but i was unsure. And im pretty sure the essay has to be max. 2,500. But honestly we get to have a lot of freedom in terms of the topic as long as we can yap about it

(Which is so true that i could apply this to a the british education system that will only ever choose to teach a history that THEY were the "heroes" without addressing the darker sides of their past :/ bc more often than not history is written by the oppressor)

wait that’s so fun what are you writing about the poems? post colonial is so interesting to write. i think some people would classify poppy war as adult fiction simply because they think it’s too graphic but i feel like that’s bs unless they’re talking about anyone under thirteen. though tbf, i read it when i was twelve so it might just be a me thing. but 2500 words is a pretty good limit because it gives you the bandwidth to write. ours was like 800 words i think, which i definitely exceeded because of the quotes.

i got a 85.6% 😭. it was on 40, so it ended up being like 34.25/40 but still.

the eurocentric context line was sort of inspired by this friend i have. she’s french, and around a month before the project, we got into an argument because she said that “colonization wasn’t inherently awful” (we were studying about native americans at that time in history) which infuriated me. she doesn’t really understand how bad it was since her country was the colonizer, but at this point, it has to be just basic knowledge that colonization was awful. i knew more about it in detail than the rest of our friends because i studied history there and it irritated me so badly. plus she’s very prone to microagressions. she has repeatedly said “indian language” despite being corrected on multiple occasions (she’s the only non-asian in the friendgroup) and said one of our chinese friends had awful english (the friend in question lived in china until she moved here two years ago). and that’s just the beginning, because she acts like white people are capable of facing racism (there’s a difference between discrimination and actual racism) and she’s also sort of a fetishizer of mlm (hollanov specifically) while also making comments like “i’d want to have a threesome with them” even though shane’s canonically gay and not bi.

(sort of unrelated sidenote, she acts so weird towards me at times. according to the rest of the group, we’ve unlocked the “sibling stage” of our friendship, but lowkey i’m not even convinced that she actually likes me. some of it can just be attributed to her trying to ragebait me but other times it’s genuinely just shitty like for a while (and i mean months), anytime i talked, either about her, or in response to her, she just aggressively went “who asked” but never failed to comment on anything i said, even if it wasn’t to her. a couple of weeks before the year ended, one of my friends (who’s not in the group) came to our lunch table to talk to me and the french girl asked if we were friends and when she said yes, went “beware, i’m just saying, she’s a bad person.” that was so incredibly out of line because the friendship was pretty new and that’s just weird af to say in the first place. sorry that turned into a way too long rant)

RF Kuang cooked when she said “That was the great contradiction of colonialism: the belief that the colonized should be grateful for the empire’s gifts, while those gifts were built entirely from the wealth stolen from the colonized.”

Tbh, a lot of people don't like Kuang's portrayal of Victoire because she isn't given any attention during the story but I personally see that as the geniality of it all:

The erasure of the black woman is so well exemplified by the story that we don't even see that Victoire is possibly the coolest, most profound and interesting character of the whole damn book up until the ending.

Some people seem to misunderstand that Kuang is painting Robin’s self-sacrifice as noble, when I really didn’t read it that way. If anything it’s emphasized that he was looking for an opening, a justifiable reason to take the ‘easy way out’, as Ramy put it. He even admits that Ramy was right. Robin’s death is a tragedy not because it’s righteous self sacrifice but because he couldn’t overcome his own itch to martyr himself rather than live in shame and grief and discomfort, yet persevering. People think the protagonist has to be on a pedestal to be worthy of being the protagonist, but Kuang really doesn’t try to put Robin on a high horse. Before they join the effort to stop the war against China, before they seize Babble, Robin is a coward. He’s frightened, complacent, and indecisive. Afterwards, before the Westminster Bridge falls, he’s reckless, combative, impatient, and borders on uncompromising because he’s now fully converted to Griffin’s philosophy of violence. But he’s never some knight in shining armor. He’s not some shining voice of reason or revolutionary strategy. He’s just a scared boy. That’s what he is. That’s what he’s always been.

thoughts on regulus with a copy quirk like monoma and dorcas with a brainwashing quirk? i feel like the ostracization backstory suits her, and it’s a whole “should be a villain but isn’t” thing for her too (in canon, at least, personal interpretations aside).

i kinda want lily with lady nagant’s quirk, and mary with momo’s. creation was such an underrated quirk because it genuinely should’ve been one of the best ones in the entire verse, but it was so underutilized.

evan having the other half of pandora’s quirk, but instead of prophecy like he’s usually hc’d as having, he’d be able to see the worst moments of a person’s life on a touch activated basis. he fights quirkless, but he has the close combat abilities to back him up with.

i see emmeline as having something like an illusion quirk that she can project, and her fighting style depends on it. emma would also have a music related quirk, something like a cross between present mic’s and nejire’s.
