Fun Fact: You and Captain America have something in common..
True love never dies. Some may live by it, then you have those that let the loss of life consume them. Fortunately, that hasn’t happened with you. The people of Wakanda adored you and your talents you were blessed with. Your love for science and passion for the medical field served you very well with the most powerful nation in the world. Besides working closely with princess and Black Panther Shuri, your main duty was being the doctor for the golden tribe and Dora Milaje when they needed it. Life was good indeed but this isn’t where your story began. The story of your origin is powerful yet it does leave many confused.
June 19th,1800 is when you were born into this world. Childhood wasn’t too pleasant to say the least. Born into a family of runaway slaves that traveled your mother became pregnant with you. Forced to give you up she took you to a secret river that contained sacred water that was told to give one eternal life and protection. After bathing you in it and feeding it to you she then wrapped you in rags and left you by the water and returned to the company heartbroken. By God’s grace you were found by a farmer that lived in the beloved kingdom of Dahomey. The poor man raised, loved, and protected you the best he could. After his untimely death when you turned 23 you were forced to join the king’s army. Yes your fighting skills tanked but what kept you in the palace was your love for healing and helping the sick and wounded. Seeing your passion and potential the king hired you as the palace’s aid. You were treated like royalty and even met and fell in love with one of the most powerful soldiers you ever seen, Izogie. The two of you didn’t get along at first but fate brought you two together when she was injured from a mission and needed your help. After time she fell for you as you did for her. In the year 1823 tragedy struck as well as opportunity emerged for you. Travelers came from a land called Wakanda and would come to the palace begging the king to have you be their doctor but of course he refused to let you go and your love was against you leaving too. Agreeing to stay had faded when you learned she was captured and killed after a bloody battle with the Oyo. Deeply heartbroken, you made your mind up to leave the palace behind without saying a word. In route to the newly discovered land a rare and damaging snow storm raged through leaving you and the company cold, tired, and hungry. Eventually death took its toll on you all causing you to freeze. With decades passing Wakanda became what it is today. Your discovery was incredible. Members of Wakanda’s Jabari tribe were digging up the land you froze in with hope to build more shelter until they came upon you and realized you were still alive. Taken to the lab of the golden tribe you were awaken, this is when your life changed forever. And just think that water your birth mother fed you was just a myth.
News had broke internationally that another one of Wakanda’s outreach facilities have been broken into. Fortunately this time the beloved Dora Milaje were there to protect the assets and it’s fellow people working in it. With power and grace they defended and earned another victory for the nation. Of course with great victory comes great cost. During the fight with the thugs from Paris, Aneka got injured and was sent back to Wakanda to seek aid leaving her Dora sisters behind. Without her they met with the queen to deliver the savages that they had attacked and arrested.
Upon arrival to Wakanda’s medical facility, the warrior awaited you her best friend for aid along with others seeking the same. Though anxious and a little cold from the chill of the waiting room, Aneka found herself some comfort while holding her wrist close to her chest watching the other nursing staff work hard and swiftly to make sure everyone was cared for. Finally you made your way down the hall and spotted Aneka in the waiting room bundled and hurt. She made eye contact with you and smiled.
“My beautiful sister!” You greeted helping her up from her seat. “What trouble did you get into this time?” you asked examining her wrist gently. Before answering she winced at the pain and proceeded to show you where she had been cut. Concern grew across your face looking at the wound then looking at Aneka.
“Come on, let’s get you healed.” With haste you led her to your examination room where you had the tools any hospital wished they could have. A few years ago you teamed up with well known doctor and scientist Helen Cho. You were fascinated by her machine that could regenerate human flesh, so as a favor she provided your practice with them. This gift filled you with gratitude because it gave you the extra tools to repair cuts or wounds with ease.
Looking around like a kid in the candy store, Aneka laid down on the medical bed ready for her. “This is almost like the lab the princess spends her time in”
Aneka’s comment made you chuckle while you carefully cleaned her cut before turning on the machine. “Now you know this place isn’t like Shuri’s sanctuary.” gently you placed her arm on the operating table and turned on the machine that worked it’s magic. “Now we can keep talking but please hold still.” Aneka nodded watching the device restore her flesh like it was before.
“So you know we need to catch up.” you said smiling, “I know I’ve been busy with the practice and you with your superhero stuff.”
Aneka chuckled softly looking at you. She hated she got to spend time with you under these circumstances but it did give her happiness because she missed you dearly. “Well it’s been a lot and lately it’s been hard for me and Ayo..” hearing this concerned you. The way the two talked about each other, you’d think they were lovers in another life time.
“What do you mean?” you asked gently putting the finishing touches to Aneka’s wrist after the procedure was over. She sighed looking at you with disappointment.
“Well.. her role as second in command has become more challenging. I was already used to her talking to me like she’s my boss but lately it’s been a little more harsh if that makes sense..”
You nod slowly because yeah you knew exactly what she was talking about. “Yeah I know what you mean..” you sighed because it brought back memories of your first love Izogie. Checking the time you see it’s the end of your shift bringing you joy. “Well my shift is over and you are healed. Why don’t we catch up over dinner then my place?” this made Aneka smile.
“Sounds like a plan!” with that being said Aneka sent a message to Ayo letting her know she’d be with you then turned her notifications off. Time away was exactly what she needed.
Downtown Wakanda was live tonight. Street music playing, people fellowshipping with one another. The whole atmosphere was just perfect and that’s exactly what the both of you needed. Finally your walk led you to your favorite food stand with a seating area to go with it.
Waiting in line to order you sparked the conversation you felt that would help your beloved friend. “You know I know how you feel as far as the love problems.” Aneka looked at you puzzled which made you laugh. “Yes Aneka, I had a life before being found in the ice of Jarbariland.” After finally having ordering you both sat down.
“Your lover..” said Aneka, “you never spoke of this before.” you look at her with sorrowful eyes.
“I tried to keep my past in my past but I feel like I have healed enough to open up about it. Her name was Izogie.” you smile, “The best way to describe her was she was fierce like Ayo and Okoye but stubborn like Shuri.”
Aneka flinched then chuckled taking a bite of food, “sounds like a huge handful”
Laughing you shake your head just thinking about the love and headaches Izogie gave you. “Yeah but she was love..”
“Well then, tell me about this lovely Izogie.” said Aneka excited. With a big smile you began to tell your story.
Peeking through the trees was the bright through the homemade curtains of your father’s shack. Again you stayed up all night making healing teas and crafting herbs for the people that you helped heal in the beautiful kingdom of Dahomey. Though you didn’t have much, you were forever grateful for what you did have. Being adopted as an infant and being raised by the village’s oil maker blessed you with the opportunity to live a fruitful life. So many across the town and palace had talked about how it would be a risk taking you in. The story of your mother and how she gave you and bathed you in the water from the fountain of youth made everyone’s imagination run wild causing rumors and fictional tales to spread, but despite that you were loved anyway.
Healing was your passion. You had always dreamed about having your own practice one day. After a while taking long walks from home to home gets tiring on your feet, but seeing the joy you bring to the ones that you could give it to reminded you of why you started this journey.
Pushing yourself off your mat you stretch and yawn allowing your body to wake up and start a new day. Suddenly the sound of the back door and exhausted grunting caught your attention, looking in the direction of the noise you see your father. Taking a deep breath he sees you then his face softens with joy. “Someone’s finally awake I see” he said, “I told you about staying up late like that.” you chuckled shaking your head while getting up.
“Very funny papa, yet I told you about tending to the farm and your oil rig by yourself.” you raised your eyebrow looking at him, “I told you with you getting older I can help you.” all your father did was laugh putting his baskets down.
“Now you know I can’t have the king’s guard seeing your potential darling.” wiping the sweat from his forehead he walks over to you hugging you. “You know on my way home I heard talk of the Agojie coming to the village actively recruiting.”
Laughter escaped your lips as you hugged him back then pulled away to grab your bath towel. “Oh papa surely that isn’t true, you know they only recruit women who are either captured or dumped at the palace.”
“Oh my sweet child,” he said, “you know things evolve over time and lately they have seen a few women in our village that have strength enough to join them.” Hearing this left you puzzled but your naive side caused you to brush it off.
“Whatever you say papa, I’m going to the lake to bath..I’ll be back to eat with you then I have a few patients to tend to in the village.”
He sighed then nodded, “Ok my child, be careful and don’t look like a superhuman while doing it. I don’t need King Ghezo getting any ideas.” you chuckled then made your way to the lake with your towel and change of clothes.
Walking down the trail that led to the sacred lake you felt the hot dust of the red clay run in between your toes. The smell of water and earthy notes of the trees hitting your nose. This was home. After placing your belongings in a safe place and stripping down you slowly enter the water letting the nippy sensation touch your melanated skin.
After your well deserved bath you dried off, got dressed and rubbed your skin with handmade oil you had made from flower petals. Picking up the skills your father taught you served you very well.
Suddenly you heard a snap from the bushes causing you to jump. Feeling the blood flow through your body, slowly you began walking away. The further you moved the closer the sound had gotten until the source of the sound made itself known. Your neighbor and dear friend Nawi. Letting out a deep sigh of relief you laugh looking at her.
“My word Nawi! You scared me!” You said. She looked stunned then hugged you tight.
“Oh Y/N, you are silly as ever. You should know my footsteps by now.” She said
After dropping off your old clothes at home and picking up your medicine bag, along the way to the village to see your patients. Nawi opened up about how yet again her father failed to marry her off. Hearing this dreaded news made you sick to your stomach and gave you a sense of survivor’s guilt. You couldn’t even fathom the thought of your sweet father selling you off to some strangers for money.
“I don’t even want a husband Y/N” said Nawi.
You sighed. “Well Nawi you don’t deserve that..besides that’s not what real love is anyway.”
As soon as you reached your first patient’s home, one of Nawi’s close friends spotted her and approached her. “Well hopefully we can catch up soon Y/N. I hope your healing duties go well.” Nawi says smiling at you. Returning the smile you give her a hug and watch as she walks off with her friend into the village to run errands.
Today’s duties weren’t bad at all. Just a few that had grew ill but it wasn’t hard for your herb creations to heal them, plus you had another gracious patient who was due to deliver her baby soon.
“Ah so you were the, what the American’s call him, Dr. Phil of Dahomey?” asked Aneka. You gave her the look then burst out in laughter.
“No silly! I simply had a passion and went for it, now hush I’m about to tell you how I met Izogie..it’s actually quite funny.” you said resuming your story.
The day had began to come to an end, luckily you were able to catch up with Nawi and her friend in the village before heading back to your father’s home. Along the way you had them laughing about your experience with one patient.
“Oh Y/N, surely he wasn’t that bad!” Nawi laughed at you.
“Are you kidding? His attitude was horrible, he fussed more than Ms. LaLa that owes the basket hut up the corner. Thankfully my tea put him straight to sleep.” you said rolling your eyes at the memories.
Nawi shook her head and laughed. “Well I hope I never get whatever cold he has.” Before you could say anything else the sound of the horn sounded off. The Agojie have returned back to the kingdom.
Nawi gasped with excitement. “They are back you guys, lets go!” with haste you all ran to where everyone met to acknowledge the beloved warriors for what they have done. Today was a glorious day because the captures have finally been freed and are back home with their families. After all the hugs and cheering the air turned thick as the brave strong women of the Agojie began their march. Not allowed to look at them, everyone bowed their heads. Everyone except you of course..
Nawi kept nudging you so that you wouldn’t get in trouble but one of the warriors happened to catch your eye. You couldn’t take your eyes off the one warrior that stood and marched strong behind their fierce leader. The richness of her melanin skin glowed with the brightness of the sun. Every muscle flexed as she moved with pride. Suddenly she stopped walking causing you to finally follow Nawi’s orders of looking down. Thinking she was about to approach you, from the corner of your eye you noticed a little boy was just as excited as you were. She playfully tapped his arm and welcomed him with a warm smile. Seeing her kindness shine from her strong exterior warmed your heart. The feeling of warm only grew to anxiety when she slowly approached you. Looking down you saw her feet stand before your feet. Hesitant to look your gaze stayed at her feet. The smell of the heat and palm oil from her body rested on your nose. Nawi shook in fear only wondering what the warrior wanted with you. Suddenly you felt her soft strong hand gently lift your head from your chin making her deep brown eyes meet with yours. You could feel your knees buckle but you stood your ground looking the beautiful warrior in the eyes. She let out a slight chuckle and smirked at how flustered you were. Slowly you gave her a sweet smile in return. Without saying a word she turned away joining her sisters into the great palace.
Aneka looked at you eyes widened. You sense left your favorite restaurant, now walking to your favorite bakery for dessert.
“So this Agojie were that serious? You couldn’t even look at them?” asked Aneka looking at the dessert menu knowing she was going to order what she always did. Doing the same you nod with eyebrows raised.
“Girl yes..that’s like me saying anytime the Dora were to walk the streets of Wakanda no one could look at you.” Aneka snickered then laughed at the logic.
“I know we put our lives on the line for this great nation but that is a bit much Y/N..” she said after paying for your treats. It was her treat since you took the time to ease her stress from the events of the mission. Leaving she continued her curiosity about your love story and what lesson she could learn from it. “Now back to you though..how did you end up living in the palace? I remember you briefly mentioned that to me before.”
Memories flooded your mind heavily remembering how you ended up living there. “I had no choice at the time. My healing skills were incredible and I was given two choices..either become King Ghezo’s doctor or…be an Agojie warrior and you know good and well fighting isn’t my thing.” you sighed. “I just hate that I was forced to leave papa..”
It’s been a week since you last saw your beloved friend Nawi. After her adoptive father dumped her at the palace after refusing another abusive husband, it left your heart lonely knowing you didn’t know if she was going to make it or not. The atmosphere shifted during this time because the search for active recruits was high. Especially for you.
Were you a fighter? No. But whispers about your healing skills made it to the king’s ear. Immediately he sent his best to take you away from your father’s home leaving him in a mess. Two of the king’s men stood in the doorway as you held your papa close with his head on your chest. His hands clinged to your garments tightly. Little my little you could feel his tears seep through your top.
“M-my baby she cannot go..” he cried. Tears streaming down his face just thinking about the memories of taking you in as a baby to seeing you grow as a woman. A smart one at that. “Why can’t she just be the king’s aid from home? She walks to everyone else you know..” he said eyeing the king’s men. One of them sighed as he could feel your father’s pain.
“The king knows this is hard for you..” the guard said, “but he made sure that she will have arrangements to see you anytime she wishes.” slowly he walked towards your father placing his hand on his shoulder. “No harm will come to her, I give you my word..besides King Ghezo has a special place made for her in the women’s palace and she will be protected by our beloved Agojie and will be paid for her work.”
Sniffing your father took his gaze off the guard then looked at you with sorrow. “My sweet angel..” he said caressing your cheek, “looks like King Ghezo isn’t giving you much of a choice.” after saying that he then took of his necklace his father gave to him and placed it around your neck. “P-please come back to see me..”
Cupping your father’s face with your hands you looked at him with tears in your eyes. “I promise..”
After gathering what you had you began to march with the king’s guards. This walk through the beloved village was different. Seeing Dahomey’s people grow quiet as they saw you being escorted to the palace was completely foreign to you and quite frankly you didn’t know how they were going to treat you beyond the palace walls. Everyone you passed by could see the look of nervousness and emotion on your face.
Finally you made it to the palace. The door was huge yet beautifully crafted. Gazing upon its artistic beauty the sudden light rush of wind hit your face and you were met with that same smell of oil that was familiar. Bringing your focus back your eyes met with the beautiful warrior that approached you during the victory march. A slight smile grazed your face as you began to bow your head. Not even getting halfway down you felt her strong yet soft hand hold your chin.
“Aht aht..no need for that here.” she said turning away from you. “Enter..” taking a deep breath you followed her command. While following her the guards handed off your things to members of the Agojie to be brought to your chambers King Ghezo had made for you.
“Your name?” you slightly jumped from being distracted from looking around. Turning your attention to the Agojie warrior you found it hard to speak. She raised her eyebrow at you. “Well..? Your papa gave you a name didn’t he?” Swallowing your spit you nod.
“Y-yes. My name is Y/N..” you smile nervously, “and what is yours?” you asked her. She smirked and replied. “Izogie.”
“Ah yes, beautiful name.” you said clearing your throat, you felt her gaze on you heavy. She was flattered but also shocked because no one has complimented her name before.
“Well umm thank you.” she replied. Faintly in the background besides the sounds of the Agojie members training amongst themselves she could hear Esi, Tara, and Amenza whispering and laughing at the way Izogie interacted with you. Izogie stopping in her tracks to glare at her sisters broke you from your trance of watching the others train and all attention was on her. “You alright..?” you asked with your eyebrows furrowed.
“I’m sure she is just fine, just a bit nervous yes?” said one of the warriors approaching you both. She was tall, of thin stature with rich melanated skin. Her hair was braided back with the most beautiful beads intertwined with them. “I’m Amenza.” she said introducing herself with a smile, she then pointed to the other two warriors approaching you. “And this is Esi and Tara.” After hearing their names called they smile at you giving you a warm welcome. It was sweet to you but you heard Izogie suck her teeth and pout at their actions.
“Since when are you all sweet to our guests?” She asked. Esi’s belly filled with laughter hearing Izogie’s comments.
“First of all we are only tough on the trainees, she is however part of the royal council now.” she said, “besides I hope you don’t scare her off with your staring.” You could feel your cheeks turn a burning red, hiding your smile was impossible because she made you feel weak in the knees anyways without trying.
“She isn’t so bad Esi,” you said smiling at Izogie, “she’s actually been very welcoming to me.” In unison all three of the women giggled and teased at your compliment. Letting a soft chuckle escape your lips you gently place your hand on Izogie’s arm making her ease her embarrassed gaze at her sister’s teasing her. “Come on, you said the king wanted to meet me and you’d show me my new home?” If looks could kill. Putting on her strong facade she glared at your hand gently touching her arm making you quickly remove it sending chills down your spine. “S-sorry..”
Rolling her eyes she sighed in response, “No need, follow me Y/N.” Hearing the way your name rolled off her tongue made you weak. With a smile you give hugs to Amenza, Esi, and Tara who were all stunned but open to your way of showing gratitude. “It was nice meeting you all, maybe we can catch up?” Smiles grew on their faces agreeing to the idea. The sweet moment was short lived until Izogie’s fierce voice echoed through the air calling for you.
“Lets go Y/N! King Ghezo doesn’t have all day!” feeling yourself flinch you. Before running to the impatient warrior, Amenza grabbed your arm to speak with you. “I’m one of the council members you know, I will see you again then.” she said. You exchange smiles then quickly you ran to catch up with Izogie who was over it. Looking upon her face you could tell she was annoyed from the little teasing session and how you didn’t move too quickly for her liking. She faced you looking deeply into your eyes so much you swear she was staring down into your soul.
“Let me make this clear Y’N..” she said, “just because King Ghezo thinks highly of you doesn’t mean I won’t discipline you like these trainees.”
Confused your eyebrows furrowed, “There was no harm-”
“The first rule of training!” she interrupted, ”always obey Izogie”. Fixing your facial expression and posture you nodded.
“My apologies Izogie..” her eyes gave you a good look up and down before she proceeded to lead you to Ghezo’s meeting he was having with the council.
Telling this story had Aneka so intrigued. So much so that she informed Ayo that she was spending the night with you to complete your girl’s day. After making it safely to your place her facial expression didn’t change which made you laugh.
“Aneka, why that face?” Aneka snickered followed by a laugh
“Your former lover sounds too much like Ayo and Okoye. Such pride and attitude..” you burst out in laughter.
“She wasn’t that..well..” you thought about it realizing your best friend was right. Looking over at her she delivered the ‘I told you so’ look. Rolling your eyes at her you proceeded to tell your story.
The hallway was nothing like you have ever seen before. The walls made of red clay and stone were carved with excellent architecture. In each pillar laid a bowl that held small balls of fire that added light. Looking around you also noticed the beautiful plants and greenery that grew. This palace was beautiful you thought yourself.
“Focus Y/N..” said Izogie, “we are approaching the King, his wives and council. They are all excited to meet you.” you nodded immediately obeying Izogie. You wanted to make a good impression but of course you wanted to be yourself as well. You never liked being fake to please anyone for their attention. That’s not simply how your father raised you to be.
Finally you made it to the throne room.
“My king..” Izogie announced gently bowing her head to him. Immediately everyone’s eyes were on her and soon gazed upon you. Izogie shifted her body over to present you to everyone. You looked up and met with the eyes of the council. Slowly you present them with a smile, then you turn to king Ghezo who was very excited to meet you. You turn to face him and bow.
“The pleasure is mine king Ghezo. I am Y/N daughter of Iman.” you introduced yourself well, this made the king pleased.
“Yes yes!” he cheered. Getting up from his throne he approached you with open arms bringing you in for a hug. Shocked you hugged him back. You heard a few gasps followed by silence. King Ghezo has never did anything like this before. Pulling away he smiled. In the corner of your eye you could see Izogie was shocked by the king’s actions yet wasn’t pleased either. You thought to yourself surely this wasn’t gestures of jealousy especially after the way she treated you earlier.
“The whispers were right. You are beautiful as you are talented.” he said, “come in come in..” quickly you followed his steps in front of everyone he called to this meeting. You made eye contact with Amenza who was giving you the teasing look. With all your might you held in your laughter knowing she won’t let you live that down.
“Everyone!” Ghezo began his official announcement, “I present to you our new royal doctor, Y/N of Dahomey!” immediately the council and his wives clapped at this wonderful news. You couldn’t help but smile at the warm welcome you were receiving, looking around you noticed Izogie still stood firm at the exit. She caught you looking and gave you a slight smirk.
“I had to bring her here because she works wonders by healing the sick.” Ghezo said then he turned his attention to you. “Y/N whatever you need I will do it for you, you will be paid for your work as well, and you can visit your papa Iman as much as you like. I give you my word.” smiling you nod.
“God bless you king Ghezo.” little did you know you could feel his wife Shante’s eyes daggering at you with jealousy. Yes she shared her husband with the others but for some reason seeing his gush over you made her sick.
Meeting the council and the king’s wives made you happy. The one that had you most intrigued was Nanisca. Growing up you remember your father speaking highly of her and what she has done for the kingdom. They even worked together before making oils and selling them.
After being dismissed you Izogie led you to your healing practice and personal chambers built just for you. Words couldn’t explain the gratitude that filled your heart. Upon opening the door you were hit with the smell of eucalyptus and lavender. Your chambers was decorated with it along with the finest draps and cloths you ever laid your eyes on. Growing up with your papa was humbling yet a blessing because though he didn’t have much, he was still able to give you what he could and taught you the importance of remembering where you came from that way you could appreciate new things.
Izogie’s bold voice broke your trance of admiring your new home. “Dinner will be served soon. Make yourself comfortable..” you smile at her.
“Thank you Izogie.” you said opening your arms for a hug. All she did was look at you. Up and down her eyes moved not knowing what to do next. You sigh and shake your head. “Izogie..” her attention then shifted to your eyes. “There’s no harm in a hug you know?” Still nothing, finally you built up the courage to walk up to her giving her a gentle warm embrace. Slowly she wrapped her arms around your waist and hugged you back. You could feel your heart race at the feeling of her holding your body close to hers. She was warm, the aroma of cocoa and mint danced around your noise. Though she was tough, this hug brought her comfort. Pulling away you smiled at her, without saying a word she smiled at you back then made her away out of your chambers.
Time had passed. After making yourself comfortable you bathed in the underground cave filled with warm water. Once cleaning yourself was complete you lathered yourself in tea tree oil you father gifted you with then got dressed. Suddenly the smell of fresh food hit your nose. Dinner time had arrived. With haste you left the cave and dropped your old clothes off to your chambers. The smell is what led you to where all the other members of the Agojie were. Looking around you witnessed them laughing, smiling, and fellowshipping with each other. This was a beautiful site to see though a part of you was saddened that you weren’t enjoying dinner with your father.
Finally it was your turn in line, the women serving the food were the sweetest and made sure you had a gracious plenty on your plate. Carefully holding your bowl in your hands you thank them with a smile then turn to see where you could sit. Then the feeling of shock hit you. On the steps you saw your beloved friend Nawi eating alone. “Nawi!” you cheered, eagar you approached her; hearing her name she looked up and gasped at the sight of you.
“Y/N! Oh my goodness!” she cried, after sitting next to her and hugging her from the side without dropping each other’s food you could tell she wanted to cry.
“Ah my best friend don’t cry..” you said wiping a single tear from her soft face.
“Did they recruit you too?” she asked taking a bite of food. After taking in a bite of the delicious food you shook your head in response.
“No my friend,” you said, “I guess my medical skills became a huge talk of the town. The king hired me as his royal healer.” Hearing this news was shocking yet comforting for Nawi knowing that her beloved friend didn’t have to face going to war.
From the distance while everyone ate their food and bonded with one another. Shante, wife of Ghezo watched you from a distance with jealousy and hatred fueling her heart.
After dinner everyone prepared for bed. Everyone except you and Nawi of course. The two of you caught up so much you followed her to the sleeping area where they were keeping the new recruits. Sitting next to your best friend you couldn’t help but look out towards the exit where the lights of the stars shined brightly.
“You know..” said Fumbe. “I am not a warrior..” Flabbergasted by this statement it caught the attention of both you and Nawi. It disturbed you because though you always admired the Agojie and all that they did to protect the kingdom of Dahomey it was a very hard roll to take on especially as a woman. Either you were all in or not in at all.
“Then why did you stay?” asked Nawi concerned. Fumbe faced Nawi with tears forming in her brown eyes and face full of worry and emotion.
“Because I have nowhere else to go..” she answered. Slowly you watched as the single tear rolled down her cheek as a symbol that she had little faith left. Your heart couldn’t take it much longer and you pulled the young lady in for a hug embracing her in your loving arms.
“Fear not young one for you are strong and you are powerful. I believe in you.” you whispered. Fumbe sniffled and pulled away just enough to face you. Gently you wiped away the tears from her soft cheeks and sealed your statement with a comforting forehead kiss. “Don’t forget that.” then you turn to Nawi with the same love and concern.
“You don’t forget that either my sweet sister..” you said caressing Nawi’s face. She smiled and nodded in agreeance. Exhaustion began to fill your body letting out a yawn that wouldn’t wait.
“Well sweet peas you have training and I have a new job to do. Get plenty of sleep.” you say getting up quietly without bothering the others. The two bid you farewell by saying goodnight.
Walking through the strong walls of the women’s palace was different during the times of night. Yes the fire burning in the bowls planted on pillars helped with the lighting but it was safe to say you were a little lost not remembering where your chambers were.
After ten minutes of what felt like you were walking in a circle to approach a door that was similar to yours. Letting out a sigh of relief you quietly open the door making entry hoping to not wake the other members of the Agojie. What you didn’t know is that you were about to get a rude awakening that would take the tiredness right out of your body.
Arms strong and sturdy wrapped around your waist while the other grazed your shoulders and neck. Afraid to cry out you felt the coldness of a knife kissing the skin of your throat. You stood there still and full of fear unable to defend yourself. Thoughts and emotions rushed through your body like not being able to see your father again.
“P-please let me go..” you whisper, “I’ll give you whatever you want.” after pleading your case you were let go. Quickly you turn to see it was Izogie with her guard up and face flushed with annoyance from being startled.
“What are earth are you doing in MY chambers doctor?” Izogie said studying your startled body language. You gulped shaking like a leaf, looking around more you noticed you were indeed in the wrong chambers. They were hers.
“Izogie I am sorry..I got lost and thought I had the right place..I’ll take my leave..”
Before leaving you felt her hand grab your wrist keeping you from leaving. Turning to face her you noticed her face was now covered in guilt from scaring you. “No Y/N..stay it is late and you need sleep. We both do.” she said showing you to her resting place. “I am sorry for scaring you..please let me make it up to you..” at first you were indeed hesitant but your father always taught you the importance of forgiveness. Relaxing your shoulders you nod. Izogie walked past you to close and secure her door then led you to where she laid her bed.
Watching her lay down first you slowly followed laying down facing away from her. You sighed trying to break the awkward feeling that filled your spirit. Yes you were attracted to her but didn’t think you’d be in her bed this soon. “Thank you Izogie..” she cleared her throat covering you and her both with a blanket.
“You are welcome Y/N..goodnight.” she says turning away from you to lay on her side.
The warmth and brightness from the sun rising shined through the makeshift curtains of Izogie’s window. You thought to yourself it would do you some good to leave Izogie’s room to retreat to yours before others made assumptions about the two of you. Suddenly the feeling of a soft cold draft of wind brushed against the back of your neck interrupting you from your thoughts. Moving to stretch you noticed the warrior’s strong arms held you. You froze the same way you did last night except this time the feeling wasn’t fear you felt in your heart but compassion and caution trying not to wake her. Carefully you turned over to see that Izogie was completely comfortable and deep within her slumber. Though you had your first day of your work to tend to, it brought you great joy to see her in this more soft state. Though Izogie was fierce she had a side of her that never experienced what real love was. Since her younger years she always held behind the shadow of her boldness to fill the void that she didn’t have.
As much you would have liked to watch her sleep, you had to go. Softly you removed her arms from your waist and planted a gentle kiss upon her forehead.
Quietly you opened her door to take leave and made your quiet escape to your chambers that wasn’t too far from Izogie’s.
Your first day was going to be an interesting day.
Fire. Her eyes and heart burned like a fire filled with rage. Yes she knew she shared her husband with other women of the palace but being his favorite fueled a greedy fire that lived within her. Shante always thought that she deserved all the glory. Due to the fact that the relationship was open, she couldn’t understand why her heart was angry when she watched her husband hugged and compliment the newly hired doctor. Unaware that she was being watched Efe, her sister wife, happened to see Shante watching Y/N from a distance.
Slowly Efe approached her gently tapping her on the shoulder making her jump in fear.
“Efe..” Shante said sighing from relief. “Why aren’t you in bed?”
The young wife just looked at her until she answered. “Wondering why you aren’t in bed..” Efe gave Shante a glare that could kill. Looking between her and the newly hired doctor she was able to put two and two together. “You know it is ugly to be jealous..she is here to help us. Nothing more.”
Shante rolled her eyes at Efe then turned her again back to Y/N. “The way Ghezo gloated over her and she isn’t even of Royal stature makes me sick. Who doesn’t she think she is?” The sister wife rolled her eyes and frowned at Shante’s nonsense.
“Get over yourself! Now go to bed..” Efe demanded.
Before leaving for bed, Shante took one last look at you. Heart burning for revenge.
The next morning before the sun rose, Shante ordered a carriage to take her to the trade off where the Oyo were settling. With haste she was taken to meet with the new Oyo General Oba to discuss a plan that needed to be fulfilled to ease her burning desire to take you down.
The trip wasn’t long but it was tiring. Finally entering the gates of the trade off she was welcomed with the eyes of the slaves locked away and put on display. The Europeans couldn’t believe their eyes and lusted over the beauty Shante was blessed with yet they were blind at the evil she possessed.
Immediately the carriage stopped when the tall strong dark complected man approached her. He smirked at his own thoughts of her but then quickly brought his mind back to reality when she spoke.
“I’d like to have a word with you in private General Oba..” she demanded. Eager to hear what the wife of Ghezo has to say he took her to a secluded area where they wouldn’t be seen or heard..or so they thought.
“So what brings you here without the support of your husband?” asked Oba sipping on his drink. Shante smirked and looked him in the eyes.
“Lately my husband has been making stupid decisions that would make us a nation full of peasants.” she says, seeing that Oba is intrigued she continues her proposal. “On my call I want you to invade our village to send a message to my weak husband that we need to do more than just keep our people safe from the trade.”
Oba gave it thought and to his knowledge it would do him some good to get back at the king that he hated so much. “The so called trade your husband is having is in that time. I will pursue your little plan then Shante..” he says taking her hand and planting a passionate kiss on it. She smiled from ear to ear at his response. “One more thing General..” she says.
“This new hire my husband brought along. He was too sweet to her at the meeting we recently had. Just to show her that I’m not a force to be reckoned with I need you to hit her where it hurts..” she says
“What may that be Shante?” asked Oba
“Kill her papa Iman..” taken aback that the wife of King Ghezo just hired him for murder. With an evil smile on her face she planted a kiss on the General’s lips then made her leave back to the village. Unknown to them, one of the servants overheard the entire encounter.
// END OF SHANTE’S POV //
“So, please tell me how long did your friend have to train to be a warrior?” asked Aneka. Taking a sip of your hot hibiscus tea you made for the two of you, you let the warm citrus drink flow down your throat bringing you comfort.
“You know they say time goes by fast when you’re having fun, well this training took weeks. The more the Agojie prepared themselves, the more the enemy did. The Oyo were some evil people Aneka..” you said. “While they trained I built bonds with the women and a few of the men as well. Of course me and Izogie bonded a lot more when she had the time-” you stopped speaking when you saw Aneka teasing you with her smirk.
“Ah I bet you did after she offered her bed so soon..” Aneka giggled, playfully you hit her arm.
“For the record it was harmless, I didn’t know she was going to embrace me in her sleep!” you laughed while going over the sweet memory. “Anyways teaser! Perfecting my craft brought me joy..I even was gifted a bed from a European whose wife needed help during childbirth.”
Aneka shot you a confused look. “A bed?”
You nodded. “Yes a bed, girl we slept on the floor! Compared to what I have now I don’t see how I made it.”
Aneka chuckled at the idea of trying to imagine you sleeping on the hard floor. Knowing how your second love is your luxury bed you have now it is definitely hard to believe.
Sharing laughs with Aneka your mind went back to reflecting on your past life as you sipped your tea. “You know besides being the doctor and being treated like royalty..I do feel like I took on the roll as a big sister. You know as being someone to turn to or keep someone in check..”
As the days passed your skills and craft grew, like the trainees for the kingdom’s beloved Agojie. Though the young women’s hearts grew with passion to become a warrior their childish ways did seem to find a way to sneak in at the wrong time. On this day Izogie and Tara were ordered to demonstrate to the trainees on how to strike your enemy with ease. Shoulder to shoulder the girls sat nice and still with their legs crossed watching them do what they did best. Unbeknownst to them they didn’t know there was a little surprise awaiting them within the training dummies.
Running quickly feeling the hot red clay brush up against their feet, Izogie and Tara jolted at the dummies. Upon cutting them they are met with a loud explosion of fire. A prank.
Sounds of giggles and laughter escaped the lips of Nawi and her new friends. Their moment of happiness was short lived after Nanisca ordered all the recruits to leave but the ones who were laughing at what transpired. Seething in pain Izogie winced at a sudden sharp pain coming from her hand. Looking down her eyes widened at the sight of blood coming from a minor burn from the fire the gunpowder produced. “Nanisca, I am injured. I must seek aid at once.” said Izogie. Immediately she was dismissed and made her way to you.
Soreness and strain began to seep through your muscles from the long day of work you had. Grateful as you were you couldn’t wait to bathe and rest your body. After relieving your last patient you began your daily clean up routine but was startled from the loud thud against the door opening wide. You had jumped; heart racing not expecting such a disturbing entrance. Yet the realizing it was Izogie that made all the noise calms your nerves a bit. “My gosh Izogie!” you cry out rushing over to her with a towel, applying pressure to her wound. Yes you were exhausted but you didn’t mind putting together the strength you had to help the woman your feelings were growing for.
“I can’t believe she did this!” Izogie yelled, wincing at the feeling of you gently fixing her wound and patching her up. “It’s like she has no self respect or respect for the Agojie!” looking her in the eye you could sense her pain but at the end of the day you weren’t going to let her get away with talking about your best friend.
“Hey now Izogie.. I know Nawi can be a pain sometimes but she is mighty.” you said finishing up the job, “she will make a great Agojie, just give her time.”
Izogie sucked her teeth and rolled her eyes, “I’ll believe it when I see it.” turning her attention to her injured hand she smiled for the first time today. “Thanks for helping me Y/N..”
Clearing your throat you give the warrior your undivided attention watching her observe your work. “You’re welcome Izogie..” looking up to read her face you could see she was flushed with stress from training which gave you an idea. “You know I don’t have anymore patients today..and King Ghezo followed through with this promise of letting me see my father. Why don’t you come with me?”
Izogie’s face lit up hearing this question, by her demeanor she was hesitant since she was so used to sacrificing her precious time to the king’s guard. “Y/N this is sweet of you but Nanisca-”
“Already spoke with her..” you interrupted, “she agreed you need a break from training the new girls. Now get freshened up and dressed to join my papa for dinner please.”
Evening time was approaching and the sunset was at its peak. Iman was in his backyard stirring the palm oils he was helping Nanisca make in order to help her provide what she promised the king. It’s warmth and shea scent filled the atmosphere. Though his body ached from constantly mixing and breaking down ingredients it didn’t stop him from getting the job done.
Walking side by side, you and Izogie made way to your father’s home. The closer you had gotten the more you could smell your father at work doing what he did best. Taking in everything it filled the lonely void that you felt since the palace came and took you away from your childhood home. Breathing in once more you took in everything making your heart fill warm. “You smell that Izogie? We are here!” you say with excitement. She takes a gentle wif and smells the rich oils filling the air. With a big smile on your face you take Izogie’s hand dragging her along with you to walk quicker. You couldn’t get to your father fast enough.
“Papa!” you called out for him, “papa! I am here!” finally you reached the backyard seeing him in his element. Letting go of the warrior’s hand you rush after him. Finally he musters the strength to look up and when he sees you all feeling of weakness left his body and was replaced with happiness and excitement to see his baby girl. “My baby!” taking you in for a hug he held you close. Opening his eyes he looked behind you to see Izogie standing by herself smiling at the two of you sharing the beautiful moment.
“Oh my goodness! Welcome fierce warrior. I am Iman” he says approaching Izogie with his hand held out. Without hesitation Izogie could feel the generous nature he possessed and shook his hand. Smiling at the two of them you walk over to join their first meeting one another.
“Papa this is Izogie, Izogie this is my beloved papa.” you say smiling at the both of them. Izogie smiled happily.
“Yes you’re the best father in the world that Y/N keeps talking about.”
Hearing this made your father’s cheeks turn red and pink and put a smile on his face to think that you love to talk about him. “Oh my goodness! Well I did the best I could with my beautiful baby girl.” he said looking at you.
“And you have been a blessing papa.” you say placing a gentle kiss on his forehead.
“Well this is just a treat! Come in come in I have dinner hot and ready for all of us to eat!” he says wiping his hands with his towel escorting the two of you inside the cozy house you grew up in.
After being well fed from dinner, you all talked for a while. Soon nightfall began to set which made your father suggests the both of you spending the night then leaving in the morning. In agreeance he offers you both spare cloths and made your old rude comfortable as possible. Though your body was tired you still longed to show Izogie your old favorite spot.
“Papa before going to bed I’d like to show my friend the lake.” you say adding a spark to your lantern.
“Ok dear, it shouldn’t be too dark with the moon and stars out. Don’t be long ok?” Iman’s fatherly instincts never left him no matter how old you had gotten. Chuckling you say yes to his request then turn to Izogie who has just finished changing in one of your father’s spare robes.
“I want to show you something special.”
Walking through your father’s beloved property with your lantern in one hand and Izogie’s in the other guiding her through the dark, you walked along the trail that led you to your favorite place. “You know I’ve noticed you’ve been stressed..” you say to Izogie.
The warrior sucked her teeth and chuckled at your observation of her. “You know I didn’t think King Ghezo hired you on as the therapist too..I thought that mental magic was for Amenza..” looking around she gets more nervous but tries not to show it, “where are you taking me anyway Y/N?”
Stopping in your tracks you made it to the destination. The lake. “My favorite place..” you answer her pulling away the large leaves that revealed a small lake surrounded by rare stones. The willow trees dangled over the water beautifully, looking up your eyes will meet an opening where the moon and stars glowed just right making the water illuminate. “Whenever I had a bad day I come here to clear my mind. I requested you accompany me because I know the pressure to build an army and fight off the Oyo has been weighing on your shoulders.” Slowly letting go of her hand you sit on a log placing your feet in the clear warm lake water. “Come sit..” you say patting the empty space beside you. Reluctant she sits beside you carefully placing her feet in the water.
Studying her body language it troubled you that she kept the protective barrier on twenty-four seven. You could sense a wall that was there but was hard to break. “Why do you care?” asked Izogie staring at the moon’s reflection in the water.
You sighed breaking out of your deep thoughts. “Why do I care about what?”
“Don’t play dumb now-” Izogie said with attitude, appalled you snapped back.
“No one is playing dumb!”
Closing her eyes and letting out a deep sigh she then looked to face you with sorrow in her eyes. “I’m sorry..I just never had someone care the way you do.”
You nod mustering up strength to forgive her. “I’ve always had a caring spirit about myself Izogie..I can’t help it. Unaware your hands were laying on one another you continued to speak. “But when it comes to you there’s something telling me to dig deeper..”
“Has whatever is telling you to dig deeper with me told you to quit..?” Izogie asked. All you could do was sigh, the last thing you wanted to do was quit. You’ve never felt such strong feelings for someone until you laid your eyes on Izogie. You were always told that love can make one weak but being blessed with the upbringing of someone who truly loves you, being called weak due to love was a lie.
Feeling movement graze your hand you looked down and noticed her hand was on top of yours. Feeling your cheeks turn hot, you blushed staring at how perfectly your hands fit together. Feeling her brown eyes on you, you look up to meet hers. Izogie looked like she was staring in your soul with the way she looked at you, your heart beat with love and nervousness not knowing what would happen in this moment. Should you kiss her? Would your friendship be ruined?
Overwhelming close you felt the breath coming from her nose gently brush across your top lip. As much as she wanted to close the gap between you two Izogie pulled away causing your heart strings to break. You really wanted to kiss but maybe this moment wasn’t the right time. “We should probably get some sleep Y/N..” she said. Without uttering a word you nod leading her back to your childhood home.
Aneka at this point was stressed. Not only was the anticipation of trying to figure out the lesson behind this story eating her alive but she always hated parts of stories that built you up only to low key let you down. “Well damn that hurt my heart. She should’ve kissed you.”
Though the memory was a little sad you could look back on it and laugh. “True but my friend if you are patient you’ll find out it happened at a different time. Besides she did meet my father which was a plus for me at least.” With the both of you getting up to put the dishes in the sink you continued to speak. “Now things do take a dark turn though, I do remember how Ghezo offered gold and riches to the Oyo general but he wanted more demanding some members of the Agojie. Of course him and the council fake agreed and they delivered heads of Oyo soldiers instead.”
Hearing that made Aneka gag, almost to the point she wanted to spit up her tea she drank up. “Now that is brutal my dear sister..very brutal.”
“I mean well to be fair they were more brutal.” you said, grabbing an apple you placed yourself on the counter. “Some things did bring some light, like the new trainees finally becoming members of the Agojie. I was so proud of my dear friend that day.” you sighed thinking about Nawi and what she could’ve become after you left, “I just wish the good moments lasted a little while longer..”
Walking through the women’s palace you took it upon yourself to congratulate the new members of the king’s guard. At this point you hadn’t spent time with Izogie since the awkward moment at your father’s home. It did break your heart but you figured at this point you might as well finish your task you set out to do before going to bed.
Finally you had found your best friend Nawi but she was busy getting her hair braided by Izogie. Turning away to leave, hearing their conversation made the hide behind the wall and listen in.
“You are now my sister, “ said Izogie finishing up Nawi’s braids, “I’d be proud to fight with you.” hearing this brought joy to Nawi’s heart. It also made you happy considering it was a long road for your best friend. Thanking God for her growth you figured you’d say congrats tomorrow..until your name was mentioned.
“You know I think my best friend Y/N would be perfect for you.” said Nawi. Puzzled by Nawi’s statement Izogie looked at her searching for an explanation. As much as she tried denying it, the warrior couldn’t help it. Besides her work all she would do was think of you and what joy you fed her heart but her past traumas were holding her back from what truly made her happy.
“What makes you think that?” Izogie asked.
Nawi smiled hard at the thought of you two. “Because it seems like she brings out the best in you. Love can do that.”
Izogie sighed trying to shake off the feeling. “I want to be like Nanisca one day..” she said with a sad grin on her face. Confused Nawi looked at her mentor.
“You don’t believe in love Izogie?”
“Love makes you weak..” she said. Hearing that hurt you to the core, “with what I have my heart set out on..I don’t know if I can have both.” with her heart hurting, zoned out in the moment all she could do was think of you and what joy you bring. Nawi was right, you did bring out the best in her but she didn’t know how to make it happen.
Sooner than later your petty side boiled over making you come from behind the wall making your presence known to the two. Noticing your presence made Izogie’s heart skip a beat, guilt had set in knowing you may have heard what she said knowing the feelings between the both of you were growing. Nawi could definitely feel the tension and quickly broke the ice.
“Y/N! What a surprise!” said Nawi standing up embracing you in a hug. Pushing your feelings to the side you hugged her back avoiding eye contact with Izogie. Pulling away letting out a sigh you face Nawi with the strength you had left.
“I came to congratulate you on becoming an Agojie warrior. I am proud my dear friend.” you said smiling at her.
“Ah Y/N! That means so much to me! You should join us for dinner..” she suggested but too much anxiety had built up in your heart from Izogie breaking it.
“I don’t know Nawi..I need to handle some things first but I’ll see you later..” before allowing her to respond you walked off letting the tears that built up in your eyes flow down your face like a river. Faintly in the background you could hear Izogie calling for you. Closer and closer her voice became louder which made your legs and feet move quicker.
Finally making it to your chambers you ran inside closing the door behind you; only to be startled by Izogie catching it before it closed. Catching her breath she pushed the door open making you move backwards struggling to keep your balance. In and out she breathed studying your face with confusion and anger. “Y-you didn’t hear me calling you?” she asked. Your jaw clenched looking her in the eyes with the anticipation to make her leave though a part of you wanted her to stay.
“Yes I heard you..I heard everything..” wiping your tears away you could tell she was embarrassed knowing you heard everything she vented to Nawi. “You know for a moment I thought I had a chance at knowing what it felt like to love someone other than myself..but I guess I was wrong.” Lost for words Izogie watched you as you walked past her holding your door open. “Go. Follow your dream warrior..”
“No..I am not leaving Y/N..” Izogie said standing firm. Appalled you looked at her angrily.
“Did you not just hear me..?” you asked pointing to the direction of outside. “You are in my chambers! I am not one of your little trainees Izogie! Under my roof you will obey me..” this only fueled her rage and you knew it, but you didn’t care. You were so full of rage yourself from your heart getting broken. Without hesitation the warrior approached you. Now the two of you stood face to face, she looked down at you staring deep into your soul and with one hand took your door and slammed it shut. Slowly swallowing your spit, your heart beat began to increase feeling Izogie’s hand hold up your chin.
“Has it ever occured to you that I’m afraid..? Doctor..” she said. Studying her face you furrowed your eyebrows. “or maybe you’re just too blind to see that I loved you the moment I marched back into Dahomey’s kingdom..” The tension was too much for you making you look away from her gaze. Holding your hands above your head you walked around your room taking in deep breaths.
“But the lake..I saw the way you grazed your hand upon mine. Your lips could have had a moment with mine yet you pushed me away and I didn’t see or hear from you since then warrior.” Walking up to her with your finger pointing in her face you continued your rant. “If you really loved me you wouldn’t let your fear push me away..Ah!” you yelped when Izogie suddenly grabbed your hand snatching your hand away from her face and with her other she pulled you closer by your waist. Not wanting to face her you looked away. Unaware of what she would do to you next you felt her breath tickle your neck then slowly your ears. Then she whispered..”what is stopping you from loving me..?” The sound of her deep rustic voice made you weak in your knees causing you to face her. You looked into her brown eyes once more, gently placing your left hand on her cheek.
“Maybe I’m scared too..” you whispered back. The feeling of fear in your heart came from the place of not knowing what everyone would think about your relationship.
With ease she rubbed your back with one hand and placed the other behind your neck. “I’m done being scared Y/N..” next thing you know her soft lips collided with yours embracing for in for the most beautifully passionate kiss. Without breaking the kiss you could feel Izogie pick you up wrapping your legs around your waist leading you to your bed for a night filled with passion and love.
Waking up the next morning you found yourself naked laying inside of Izogie’s arms. Skin to skin you were connected. Reminiscing about last night’s events you couldn’t but smile and giggle. Turning over you noticed Izogie had just woken up herself. Smiling at you she pulled you in for a slow passionate kiss that rocked your world. “Good morning..” she said after pulling away.
“Good morning to you too warrior..” you said kissing her forehead while playing with her hair.
“You were so amazing..I hope we didn’t wake up the whole palace.” she whispered then proceeded to leave wet kiss on your neck, chest and collarbone causing you to moan, the sensation sending chills down your spine. Nothing could ruin this moment except the gut wrenching scream that came from the village. Waking up from your trance the both of you shot up and got out of bed.
“What was that?” you asked frantically putting on your clothes. With hasted Izogie put on hers.
“I don’t know but it didn’t sound good at all..”
It didn’t take long for the two of you to leave your chambers only to see the Agojie running around in a panic grabbing their weapons.
“Izogie!” Nanisca called for her from a distance. “Grab your weapon!” without question she kissed your cheek then rushed to follow Nanisca’s orders leaving you standing in the middle of the women’s palace confused. Thankfully Nawi approached you.
“Y/N! Please stay here, the Oyo is attacking the village!” You let out a gasp of worry grabbing Nawi’s arm before she left you.
“Nawi! Wait! My father! I need to get to my father!” you cried out. Nawi dropped her weapon and grabbed your shoulders trying to knock some sense into you.
“Y/N..please listen to me it is not safe.” Leaving you to your thoughts Nawi joined the Agojie and began to fight the few Oyo soldiers that invaded Dahomey.
Aneka gasped nearly spitting out her water listening to this. “Great Bast! So how bad was this..?” Before answering you got choked up with tears. The memories rushed through your head like a river nearly giving you whiplash.
“The kingdom lost a lot of innocent lives that day..Ghezo was angry because not only did we find out one of our own betrayed us but I lost the one person who truly loved me that day..”
Running through the village was like a horror movie. The Agojie since scared off the Oyo attackers and did their duty trying to console the villagers who lost beloved loved ones.
Body aching and out of breath you made it to your father’s home that was in complete shambles..blood everywhere. The garden destroyed with a few possessions stolen. What you didn’t know is that Izogie, Esi, and Nanisca were already on the scene because the Oyo’s leader made it his business to attack your father’s home.
“Y/N!” Esi cried running to you trying to keep you from going any further. Using what strength you had you tried pushing her off of you.
“Where is my father Esi?!” you demanded breaking away from her. Nawi soon joined in hearing your crying and frustration. You then saw Izogie walking out your old home covered in blood and closed ruined.
“Y/N..” she said but you didn’t hear her. Then what you saw changed your life forever..your father’s body on the floor.
“Hold her back!” Nanisca demanded. You then felt Izogie and Esi hold you then you cried out in terror.
“PAPA!!” the tears flowed out your eyes. Nawi holding your face in her hands trying to distract you from Nanisca and the other king’s men trying to recover your father’s body wasn’t helping. The one person that truly knew you was gone. He took you in as his own and loved you. Every memory you were remembering made you fall to your knees crying out for Iman wishing he would wake up.
Your heart filled with grief reliving this part of the story. Your father always told you to be strong when it came to telling your testimony but this hit different for you. He truly didn’t deserve to die like this. He deserved to grow old. Aneka held you running her fingers through your hair. “You can stop here if you’d like Y/N..I’m so sorry..”
Wiping your tears you sat up shaking your head. “No..I’m ok Aneka, really. It just hurt but what it is what happened next that hurt everyone the most.”
The funeral services honoring the fallen was beautiful. This kingdom had did something they have never done before. Everyone who had lost someone in the invasion was able to march with their body throughout the village before being buried. They didn’t have to but Izogie, Nawi and Esi made it their mission to march with you. After the services and saying your final goodbyes to your father Iman the King ordered all of the royal staff and guard to meet him with a guest regarding the attack.
Walking through the palace’s doors you didn’t expect the news that was going to hit your ears.
“My people! We have a guest here today to give a confession regarding the attack that has hurt our people!” he then pointed to two of his guards at the doors. “Bring him in!” with haste the doors opened to reveal the slave that the Oyo general took under his wing. It made him sick knowing Ghezo’s wife was the one to plan the attack and murder of your father.
“State your name!” Ghezo demanded. Looking at his surroundings then the king he spoke up.
“My name is Geno son of Rafa. This is my home, I was kidnapped by the Oyo at a young age.” you listened like everyone else anxious about what was so important that he had to show his face at the kingdom.
“What brings you here Geno?” asked Nanisca impatient. His gaze then looked at Shante who was at the edge of her seat covered in guilt knowing he was about to rat her out.
“Great leader, I am here because that woman!” he shouted pointed at Shante, “seduced the general and convinced him to kill Dahomey’s people.” Hearing this made your blood boil. Getting up from your seat you cried out facing Ghezo’s wife with anger.
“You evil wench!” you screamed completely ignoring Izogie grabbing your hand trying to keep you from charging after the king’s late wife. “You had my papa killed?!”
Not trying to hold her innocence she argued back at you. “Well you were all over my husband doctor!”
“ENOUGH!” Ghezo commanded. Gasps had escaped everyone’s lips, it had became so quiet you could hear a pin drop. “I would never seduce Iman’s daughter Shante! We needed a doctor and you know this!” being in the hot seat Shante sunk down in her chair. “But for you to have her father killed and most of our people gone is outrageous!”
“King Ghezo! Please I have one more thing to say..” Geno interrupted. Breathing heavily he turned his attention to the Oyo slave.
“What is it now? I’m sure you’ve said enough.” said Ghezo. Geno then turned to face the king’s guard with pride before making his announcement.
“People of Dahomey! Me and my company have escaped the hands of the Oyo which is why I am able to stand before you but we know that an evil from the Oyo is coming. Your safety is important which is why I propose that whoever would want to join us may join us on moving to a new land known as Wakanda.” quickly everyone started to whisper as Geno turned back around to Ghezo. “King please hear me, I will be traveling back and forth..you are even welcome to move with us. This war between the two kingdoms isn’t safe.” Before Geno could say anything else Ghezo ordered for Shante to be taken away and walked up to Geno.
“With all due respect we are well protected.” he said referring his attention to his warriors. “But if we need to move I will let you know..” Geno felt a little defeated but respected Ghezo’s decision.
“I understand King just remember I will be back if anyone wants to join me.” said Geno before leaving with his company.
Shante being arrested, hearing about Wakanda for the first time, it was overwhelming for you. With tears falling down your face you ran out of the kingdom doors with your heart shattered into pieces.
Night fall had set in. You figured everyone was worried about you but you didn’t care. You ran off to the place that truly brought you comfort. The lake behind your father’s home.
Since the attack the property had been cleaned which made it a little easier to tolerate going near it but the memory still haunted you.
Sitting on the log you had your feet in the water wondering what to do with your life next. Should you stay? or leave to discover what this land called Wakanda could bring?
“Thought I’d find you here..” escaping your thoughts you turn around to see Izogie walking towards you. “Everyone’s been worried..I know that was a lot.” You sighed turning your attention back to the water.
“Why do I feel like my life is over Izogie..” you said looking down. Suddenly you felt her strong arms pick you up placing you on her lap. Relaxing yourself you laid your head on her shoulder as she held you and caressed you. Planting a sweet firm kiss on your head she looked down at you.
“Y/N..you are powerful, more than you ever know..” she said looking into your eyes wiping away the lone tear falling down your cheek, “don’t let anyone take it away.” you sighed. No one has ever spoken to you like that besides your beloved father.
“Shante killed the one person who truly knew me Izogie..” you whispered, “I-I have no one..” immediately Izogie sat you up to face her. Looking into her eyes you could feel everything she felt. She knew you were hurting badly.
“That is not true my love. You have me and always will.”
“But you are a warrior..” you said shaking your head, tears filling your eyes again, “what if you leave me..?” this was a harsh truth but it wasn’t something the two of you could ignore.
“Even if I am called home my love. I am always with you.” Izogie said sealing her words with a forehead kiss.
After telling Aneka your emotional story. She knew that life was too short which made her realize though her and Ayo didn’t always agree. Making up with her was easy knowing that you shouldn’t take life for granted.
Today, you and Aneka took a special trip to where the kingdom of Dahomey once was. After telling your dear friend your life story you revealed you kept one of Izogie’s outfits and on the anniversary of her death you wanted to burn them along with your funeral garments to make peace.
After successfully making the fire in the old field not too far from the old kingdom you gently took the clothes from your bag. “You know..after the war Nawi told me how Izogie said she loved me before taking her last breath.” you said slowly placing her garments in the fire. Taken aback Aneka looked at you with sadness in her eyes.
“Y/N are you trying to make me cry again?” she asked holding back her tears.
After placing all the clothes you packed in the flames you sat next to your beloved friend taking a deep breath watching the linen turn to ash. “Her memory isn’t entirely lost you know. Shuri managed to help me find some of the Agojie’s old clothes and she was able to use this machine to copy whatever memories I had of them and now it’s at display at the local history museum. I should take you sometime.”
Aneka was excited to hear this news. “Oh please do Y/N!” she hugged you tight which made you smile. “But I must ask, what made you want to leave Dahomey officially?”
“Looking back on it Aneka..it was time. My love was killed, my sweet father was gone and though I had Nawi and the others I felt empty. Life had took too much away from me and I wanted to see what life had to offer. Did I expect to be frozen over and found later by the Jabari? No but I just feel like I was found that way for a reason.” you then turn your attention back to the fire. “And I know that no matter where life takes me..my love is always with me.” Closing your eyes you took a deep breath feeling the wind flow through your hair.
