The thing I love about Queer Eye is they don’t have cookie cutter, one size fits all solutions. Like, most shows in this vein where a family member nominated a person to have a makeover just does whatever the nominator wanted. The mom says “He needs to settle down,” so they get him looking good so he can get married.

But Queer Eye asks the person what they want out of it. I remember this last season, the DJ was nominated by his family & they said they wanted him to stop DJing & start a family. But the Fab Five listened to him say he wanted to DJ professionally as his only job & didn’t seem especially concerned about having kids. So they gave him suggestions for how to DJ professionally & he told his family he’s gonna do that.

And for clothes, Tan doesn’t just say “well you look like this so you need these clothes.” He asks what they like about their body, what they don’t like. He doesn’t just say “you’re fat so this shirt hides your stomach.” If they want to hide or show something, he works with that.
