The PBW Witch Shop is a curated selection of witchcraft and magic related zines, books, pin-back buttons, tarot cards and more.

We focus on traditional and folkloric witchcraft, animism, chaos magic, secular witchcraft, magical herbs and plants, queer witchcraft, tarot & Divination, witchcraft & magic in politics, history, culture, and social & racial justice,  and aspects of non-Wiccan forms of witchcraft, magic, and paganism.

Pre-Covid the Portland Button Works primarily made custom pinback button. Selling zines and books was secondary and more of a hobby for me to share things I’d like to read. Right now our business is pivoting to focus on books and zines that people can read in the comfort and safety of their own homes. Some items are from well known witchcraft and occult publisher and some are titles from small publishers with interesting items I don’t see in other shops but I’m excited to elevate.

In times of dire stress, physically or emotionally, an Avatar can go into ‘Avatar State’ which allows for cosmic connections with all of the Avatars of the past, drastically increasing the Avatar’s knowledge and power. While an accomplished Avatar can invoke this at will, it is when one is pushed to their physical or emotional limit that this last-hope defense mechanism is activated. I was definitely a profit killer when I worked in a pharmacy (which honestly was my favorite job in the entire world, but it was short-lived and nowadays you can’t work at a pharmacy like that, it’s all tied in with corporate retail and no one should ever trust me with a cash register ever). It was not, however, actually a profit killer for the pharmacy, just for the drug companies, so no one cared. These days I do medical billing, which means I actually bill OUT from hospitals so I’m mostly spending my professional time taking money away from insurance companies. 

I will now impart all of my profit killing resources onto you, in case you don’t know them. I think most of you know them, now. But just in case you don’t.

THIS IS US-CENTRIC. I’M SORRY. 

1. GoodRx - this thing has an app now, so you can look up the best places to get your expensive medicines at the lowest possible prices without insurance on the go, and you no longer have to print coupons because you can just hand over your phone or tablet. Times have changed for the better with GoodRx. Definitely use it before trying to fill your scrip, because it will tell you the best place to go. (You can do that on the website, too.)

2. NeedyMeds - Needymeds is basically the clearinghouse of drug payment assistance. They have their own discount cards, but also connections to many patient assistance programs run by drug companies themselves. They are good assistance programs, too.

3. Ask your county - This is not a link. This is a pro tip. Most county social services will have pharmacy discount programs for people with no and/or shitty pharmaceutical coverage. You can often just find them hanging around at social services offices; you can just pick one up and walk off with it. 

4. Ordering online - There are a few safe online pharmacies. I keep a little database in a text file on my computer. Most of them are courtesy of CFS forums, my mother or voidbat, so a lot of that is a hat tip to other people, but if you’re in need of a place to get a drug without a prescription … first I’ll make sure you 100% know what you’re doing for safety reasons and then I’m happy to turn over a link. 

5. Healthfinder - A government resource that helps find patient assistance programs in your area. This might also point out the convenient county card thing. RxHope is something a lot of people get pointed to via Healthfinder that’s a good program.

6. Mental Health America - Keeps a list of their best PAPs for psychiatric medications, which can be some of the most expensive and a lot of pharmacy plans don’t cover them at all.

Also! Some drug companies have patient assistance programs where they send you the drug for FREE if you are uninsured, or if your insurance doesn’t cover that drug.

Do a Google search for “patient assistant programs” + (your med), or search the manufacturers website. Sometimes the info is online; other times you have to call.

Even some of the big name pharma companies have this. It’s certainly not all companies, or all meds, but it is worth a shot.

Before Obamacare, I lost insurance and couldn’t pay for my mood stabilizers (kiiiiinda important to have those when you’re bipolar.) I was on generic Lamictal, but I went to the official Lamictal website, filled out a form with a valid prescription, and they mailed my meds to me every month for free.

If you know anything about bipolar disease, you know that that was a literal life saver. Patient assistance programs ftw!

Some of my meds are no longer going to be partially covered by my ridiculously expensive private insurance. I just used the GoodRX website to look it up, and I can either spend $40 at Target to pay for one of them out of pocket–per month–, or I can get it at Sams Club for $4. No that is not a typo. The drug I need to take every single day to keep my allergies from spiraling out of control (yay auto-immune bullshit) is literally ten times cheaper at Sams Club. Holy shit.

How to Start a Meditation Habit

To develop a mediation habit, simply sit quietly for a set period of time at the same time everyday. If you do it when you wake up, it helps you wake up. If you do it before bed, it can help you sleep. Set an timer for fifteen minutes and sit with your back straight. You can sit anywhere comfortable. If you are comfortable on a cushion on the floor, that is fine. If you are more comfortable in a chair, that is fine too. Your straight back helps you be both relaxed and alert. If you sit on a couch and lie back into it, you will be sleepy. If you sit with your back straight you will be alert.

Set your phone not to interrupt you. Sit in a place where there are few interruptions and make that 15 minutes a protected time.

When you are sitting, focus your attention on your breath. You can count your breath from one to ten as you go. When thoughts distract you from your counting, let the thought go and bring your attention back to your breath and your count.

Don’t expect any miracles when you start mediating. Those happen slowly.

Aquarius South Node

A detachment to emotions or more so being surrounded by more intellectually inclined, dispassionate, scientific, or very unsentimental people and environments may be what they are use to. Paying attention to community, organizations, groups comes naturally. Despite Aquarius being all about individuality, this person may feel more comfortable focusing on the group and others than their own self and identity. Not to say there is any loss of self, no, but themes like conformity, peer pressure, tapping into collective trends and thoughts may come a little easier for this person. Whenever you hear about self vs. other themes in astrology you typically hear a lot about Aries/Libra or 1st/7th house and I am willing to say Leo/Aquarius also has this element to it in the dynamic. Capricorn South Node

To be upfront, there may be a comfortableness with being controlled BUT even more so to have control. This could have come from a controlling upbringing, an unpredictable life, or people in their life who put all the responsibility and authority on them. They are use to structure, LOGIC, rules, things making sense, practicality, maturity, seriousness, and responsibility. Not only does taking care of themselves come naturally but guiding, taking care of, protecting - mostly being responsible for others comes naturally. Emotional suppression can be what they are use to. It feels uncomfortable to express feelings and “burden” others with their worries or problems. OR they could be around people who approach emotions as something highly private and not to be shared. Their natural environment can feel cold at times or even cutthroat. They are most comfortable around the down-to-earth, the level-headed, maybe the crude, the “what you see is what you get”, and those that get business done. Ambition, tenacity, their ability to overcome obstacles is a strength. They’re use to the harshness of reality, expects something to go wrong, wants to always be prepared. Out of their comfort zone is letting go, relaxing, overcoming negative thoughts and worries.

Scorpio South Node

Hiding away is what comes naturally or is an instant response to many things in life. Hiding away as in shielding their emotions, vulnerability, intentions, insecurities, and fears. This South Node feels comfortable in the dark and in a place that is hard to get to know them. Maybe they were very sensitive when younger, had a family that poked too much at their privacy and self-autonomy, maybe something made them feel powerless in the past. There could be many things that cause this. There is also comfort in taking control and trying to maintain self-reliance and even more so a power over others in their life and their own path in life. The Taurus North Node isn’t about some explosive opening or dramatic surrendering to chaos and unpredictability, it is about steadily coming to terms with reality, with honesty, and letting emotions and relationships rest on the surface with peace or grounding. Because polar opposites are about what is opposite, sometimes a stark contrast, Scorpio South Node holds onto extreme pains and inner turmoil where the Taurus North Node pulls to let go of the internal war and tap into inner strength and stability. The Scorpio South Node comfort zone can be brooding and bathing in their own deep emotions. Another tally mark of a grudge is on their prison wall. Another person to distrust on their list of worries and observations. The Scorpio - Taurus dynamic also has themes of survival. The South Node has strength in facing their emotions to survive and the North Node shows a place of resilience and endurance. Sometimes they feel safer or more comfortable with those they can control. Trust and intimacy are in their sphere of what feels right and it may mean they are attracted to those who seem most trustworthy, good listeners, sworn secret keepers. A feeling of always having trust be betrayed could be what they are use to as well. A pattern of “testing” people could happen. But this South Node can have a great strength of emotional insight and perception into human nature.

Libra South Node

Cooperating with others, being a team player, maybe people pleasing, adapting to the social environment or to other people, losing the self in others, or focusing more on others than themselves comes naturally. Peaceful environments, not being pressured, attractive environments, artistic zones, attracting others, being part of a partnership, or being part of a team is their comfort zone. An impulse to quickly resolve problems, to play mediator, and maybe to enable can exist. Standing up for the self, learning to take on conflict, and independence is where they step outside of what comes naturally and what feels normal. Objectivity, seeking to balance, playing devil’s advocate, seeing all sides of a situation are both strengths and disposition of this placement. The South Node in Libra could also indicate being use to people or environments where for whatever reason conflict had to be solved immediately or was unhealthily avoided. An atmosphere that prompted detachment from the negative and/or intense is associated. They easily attach to those in their life that compliment them, possibly overshadow them, sometimes others who are highly relationship-oriented, those who are gentle with them, and those who do not argue, challenge, or compete with them.

Taurus South Node

The Taurus South Node feels most comfortable with the predictable or routine. People or environments that are reliable and offer a lot of security. Sometimes they may feel comfortable in something that is “too easy”, in a rut, or may stay in a relationship just for the security. There is a matter of owning and possessing. Possibly learned when young the feeling of possessing something or someone feels “right”. There is strength in practicality, patience, and endurance. This may be in their character or accepting an environment of enduring hardships or things they don’t like OR living a highly pragmatic life. They feel most comfortable with little pressure, not being rushed, the ability to take their time, and the ability to slowly come to decisions or conclusions. The Taurus South Node is very much about attachment to the physical and to “the real”. This person is down-to-earth and there is a lot of positives to that. But they need to learn to look beyond the obvious. Find meaning and value to the non-tangible.

Aries South Node

Comfortable in thinking about themselves, it is instinctual. In this way they may relate themselves to others impulsively. While somewhat “Libra-like” they still do this with self-interest in the front of the mind. The comfort zone is in taking the lead or possibly more often doing things on their own. Hobbies, achieving success, projects or homework. They are not “alone” socially but when it comes to getting stuff done… they want to be the one and only. Staying active, little time for rest, refraining from showing sensitivity, frank discussion, being forward, and having a positive mindset is part of what comes naturally. With optimistic thinking could indicate the uncomfortable need to face things like vulnerability, inner sadness, accepting failure, accepting weaknesses. The SN strengths is in ME. Individuality, courage, honesty, attention to self-needs, independence. Their “comfort zone” might also include people or environments that allow freedom and individuality. People who admire them or follow them. People who respect their space. Could also be people who challenge them, compete with them, or always cause conflict.
