17. holding hands while skating [prompt list]

Alex hovers at the edges of the garden, his hand wrapped tightly around the tree at the edge of the backyard. Reggie and Luke laugh at each other as they skate around the iced-over pool, and Julie watches them fondly from a corner. Carrie and Flynn are whispering furiously behind their hands, with occasional glances at Reggie and Luke.

Alex almost reaches out with his left foot, but his hand refuses to leave the tree and he steps back. He studies Reggie and Luke's confident strokes on the ice, and doesn't notice Julie sliding up to him.

She taps him on the shoulder. "Don't feel like skating?"

Alex shrugs. "I never learned how to. My parents couldn't be bothered."

Julie grins at him and unclenches his fingers from the tree, and clasps their hands together. "I'll teach you," she offers.

Alex eyes Luke and Reggie, and looks down at Julie's genuine, open face. "O-Okay."

She takes his other hand, and guides him out into the ice, slowly. Alex's feet wobble and he yelps, but Julie chuckles and moves his arm so it's resting around her shoulder, and she's helping him balance on the ice.

"Now, what you want to do it keep your knees a little bent and spread parallel to your shoulders, so you don't lose your balance," Julie tells Alex. Alex, carefully, moves his feet apart and bends down, slightly. Julie continues to instruct him through the basics of ice skating, her hand firm in his.

After a while, Julie skates out from under Alex's arm and smiles at him. "I think you're ready to skate on your own now!"

Tentatively, Alex reaches out with his left foot, and then his right, and his feet nearly slip. Julie is there; she grabs his hand and steadies him, smiling comfortingly at Alex.

"Okay," he manages, and his right foot goes forward, his left; and he's skating, holy shit. He's skating!! Alex lets out a whoop, and Julie laughs beside him, their hands linked.

Willie: If the police were to pound on my door and go, 'A man has been murdered in your building and you are a person of interest,' I'd be like, 'Moi? Oh, do go on.'
