Bow: Adora, we need to talk.
Adora: Hmm?
Glimmer: You need to sleep.
Adora: No I don’t.
Catra: We just saw you walk into a wall, say “excuse me”, and walk into another wall?
Adora: None of us can function in the morning.
Bow: It was 6pm, Adora.

Can we just take a moment to talk about the importance of what Noelle and the other creators of She Ra just did? I mean, aside from just giving queer representation in general?
They created a plot line that was so focused, so inherently centered around the relationship between two characters. They made a queer centric show, that already provided more inclusion than most children's shows out there- and they took that a step further, they said "This show is about Adora's relationships, specifically her relationship with Catra." They allowed for growth, mistakes, turmoil between the characters, and they allowed change.
Many people, myself included, wondered how Catra could possibly redeem herself after everything she did in the prior seasons. Like with everything in this show, they handled it masterfully; Providing Catra a genuine and believable redemption that didn't feel forced, and showing the struggles she faced in trying to become better. She wanted to change, for Adora, for herself, for everyone she had wronged- and that wasn't easy for her. In order to truly become redeemed, she had to admit why she had turned so bitter and stubborn in the first place. She had always loved Adora- and didn't know how to handle losing her. She worked through it, and learned to express her emotions without that rage.
On top of that, there isn't a sacrifice. In fact, it's the other way around. In so much queer media, characters have to make a choice between their love interest and their destiny. The "Tragic lesbian" trope is something so often seen in pop culture. In She Ra, that trope is flipped on its head. Catra believes her whole life that she doesn't matter, and Adora refuses to admit that she wants something, needs something. It is only through admitting their tragic mistakes and faults that they can become happy. Their destiny does not interfere with their love, their love ALLOWS their destiny- their dream- without sacrificing anything. They are allowed to be happy, they are given the chance to save everything because their love for each other is so strong. Because that's all either of them ever actually needed. They needed to admit that their feelings for each other mattered.
In the end, She Ra allowed for a protagonist queer relationship to develop naturally, and to literally guide the show along. The show was about relationships, growth, love. In the end, it made perfect sense that it had to be Catra and Adora- it was about them from the start. Having that representation, that genuine representation without it being in the background or ending in tragedy, that's something that is so important. Creating a story of genuine love and redemption not through sacrifice- but through genuine connection and bonding- is so important, and it can show so many children that strength comes from the people we love, and people are not beyond hope. People can change. People can forgive. And people can find love. That is so important, especially for young LGBTQA+ children who likely will not be given a lot of media that allows for that expression.
Thank you Noelle Stevenson. Thank you team of She Ra.
Wrong Hordak, t-posing in the doorway: Good evening, parental figure.
Entrapta, not looking up from her coffee: Good morning, adopted child
Glimmer: Why hasn't anyone killed you yet?
Catra: Dumb luck. In that I’m lucky you’re all so dumb.
Horde Prime: I have an army.
Perfuma: I have tHE POWER OF FRIENDSHIP, BITCH!
Glimmer, storming in: Your wife is bonkers!
Adora: Yeah, but she’s cute.
Bow: Oh c’mon, Adora. You loathe-slash-love Catra. And she loathe-slash-love’s you back, which is pretty much one step away from matrimony.
Scorpia: So how have things been lately? Anything new and interesting?
Catra: Mostly just me entering a separate plane of existence and screaming while I exist in the real world
Scorpia: Do you have any hobbies? Catra: Self destruction.
