It’s really tragic and bootleg, that this show got cancelled in the middle of it really amping up. I’m still mad about it. I personally think it wasn’t saved because people were afraid of keeping a show about slavery, that was not just trauma porn for white viewers. But that’s just me.

Dont forget only a few weeks after the news was announced, another network announced a show about “if the south won the civil war”, which, I’m assuming, never came to fruition.

Underground had so much more potential, it was bringing in even more amazing actors, and the networks excuse was “our network is moving in a new direction”

Yeah, HBO announced Confederate was a thing. I was at a conference, where the VP of I think Story Development at HBO was saying, “why didn’t you guys give it a chance?” like was big mad about it. Simple answer, because it was a trash idea, that never should’ve gotten the traction it got. Smh.

Also, Underground was a showstopper, it just didn’t get on the right network. Like, the only reason I knew WGN America was a thing, is because of Underground. And that’s really the problem. It wasn’t given the chance it deserved.

Okay, I HAVE to jump in because I was deep in Underground fandom back then (I, and about four other people *sadlaugh*) … but Underground was the biggest hit WGN ever had. It trended regularly on twitter and put WGN on the map critically and social media-buzz-wise. THE REASON it was cancelled is because Sinclair Media tried to fake-buy the network. No joke. WGN cancelled ALL of it’s shows to prepare to become another alt-right FOX News network and the deal fell through because of some legal something or other on Sinclair Media’s end. I honestly would not be surprised if they went through all that just to get the show cancelled. Because it #1 Made escaped slaves strong and heroic and #2 showed what REAL white allies should be willing to put on the line to help their fellow human beings. #3 included morally gray/ black characters who were also likeable and charismatic (CATO!!!) who weren’t punished narratively for being unapologetic. 3 years later, I remain pissed and I still implore people to watch. It’s streaming on HULU, FYI.

EDIT: I added a source, -a Variety news article about the deal, so yall know I’m not some weird hotep or shea making shit up.   THEY LEGIT fake-tried-to-buy WGN. WGN cancelled all of it shows in prep… And then the deal didn’t even go through lol. I want this to spread wide.  It needs to be more widely known.  And this is ALSO a big reason why I’m invested in seeing Misha Green’s Lovecraft Country succeed.   Because they quite literally sabotaged a black female showrunner’s first successful show.

As one of those four people, I’m mad. WGN has Twitter live every Wednesday. Like multiple tags related to the show were trending at the same time sometimes.

Either way, the fact they did all of this, in front of my salad, without myself and many others being privy to it, is deeply upsetting.

I need to also mention, not only was the show amazing in every sense of the word, the creators of the show cared about its audience. I was in direct contact with one of the people responsible for the show, and when I brought up the prospect of more queer characters in the show (i.e. Cato, Elizabeth & Georgia), she told me if we really wanted it and expressed it as an audience, they would listen.

All of this makes me wonder, what if there was enough pressure from the public? Would a network step up and make it a thing again. I know it’s a long-shot, but a boi can dream.

i was 14 and i was walking through a mall by myself at 12am after my shift at coldstone creamery lol and a bunch of men started whistling and meowing and getting really close to me and they kept asking me questions and i kept not answering until i didn’t know what else to do so i said “i’m only 14” and almost in unison they said “we don’t care” i was so fucking scared i didn’t know what to do and they kept talking about how i looked and how my body looked and what they would do i was on the verge of tears i was all alone in a huge mall i knew i couldn’t outrun them all i felt totally hopeless until a maintenance worker came up to all of us with a huge industrial broom in her hand, i thought she was going to yell at all of us for being in the mall after hours bc she probably thought we were all friends but instead she cursed all of them out in spanish, threatened to press a panic button on her belt and then proceeded to walk me to the basement garage and waited with me until my mom got there to pick me up she had a death grip on her cart the whole time and a face of steel she looked so strong and i just kept saying thank you and she kept saying not to thank her because she had to stop them.

that was the moment i realized women were the most important beings on this planet and we have to protect each other bc nobody else is going to, she didn’t even know me, we couldn’t even communicate that well because of the language barrier, she could have lost her job for waiting with me in the parking lot but she looked out for me when she didn’t have to, she had nothing to gain from it, i’m 21 now and i tell everyone this story even though it happened 7 years ago, what she did that night helped me form and shape lot of my beliefs early on.

i was at a grocery store really late one night and some old guy kind of eyed me as i walked out of the store next to this other lady. She and I made eye contact and i knew she was scared too. we loaded up our groceries into our cars as fast as possible and I had way more bags than her so she got done faster than me. I panicked because i was sure she was going to leave so i just hurried faster, shaking a little, and then i noticed she sat in her car, watching me and making sure nobody came near. She waited not until all my groceries were loaded, or until my cart was put away, or until I got into my car. No, she didn’t drive away until I drove away. 

And that was the moment that I realized how much women need other women. That we can’t win this war without each other and we have to be looking out for each other, every second.

another time, nocigar and i were walking home and at a stoplight a stranger grabbed my arm when i wouldn’t respond to him and tried to physically drag me over to him. she—who is, by the way, not a very physically imposing girl—ripped his hand off my arm and snarled, “don’t fucking touch her.”

I just left a plantation tour in Louisiana. I have a lot to say…

I honestly thought I knew everything about slavery. Not so.

The owner of this particular plantation had it built by slaves for 3 years. Every brick was handmade. Over 120,000 bricks on 2,000+ acres of land (this place was huge.) The clay used for the bricks came from the Mississippi River. The majority of the slaves are buried under the Levees and water. Some are buried with their Masters. Not allowed to live with them but could be dead with them.

Before you enter the house, there’s a list of slaves who lived here including their age and how much they were purchased for. 124 total. Some slaves were worth as little as $25. As young as 5 years old.

On this particular plantation, the owner was big on punishment…he used noise making neck restraints. Imagine three 4lb balls around your neck with bells inside. Children were restrained by ankle locks that connected between their ankles.

This was a sugar cane plantation, one the worst practices to involve slaves because of its danger. A lot of slaves were decapitated, amputees and killed from the fields and machinery. A lot of kids lost their lives creating sugar. Speaking of children, a child stood in the living room and operated the fan with a string while guests ate dinner. As young as 3 years old.

Here’s what shook me even further: Before the Civil War, a lot of slave owners were going in debt and could not afford their properties and were not producing enough cotton and sugar to maintain their lifestyles. Slaves were used as HUMAN CREDIT CARDS. Slaves were a guaranteed line of credit. You could get HALF of your property’s value depending on how many healthy and able slaves you owned.

My people were human credit cards and lines of credit to BANKS. We were property. We were labeled as equipment and nothing more.

There is no such thing as a good slave owner. They owned my PEOPLE and used them as checks and balances. This cycle continues with prison and brutality. I do not want to hear shit about “Why can only Black people say this or that?” I don’t want to hear shit about “we’re all human.”

And by the way, not one of those slaves are at rest. Those spirits were so alive, you could feel their presence, their pain and someday, their revenge.

Note: The last time the home was OWNED by a Louisiana citizen was 1972. This is her original bedroom, her lipstick is STILL on the dresser. This is why the house has been updated since slavery times because it was occupied up until 1972. Regardless, this used to be where house slaves slept.
