OKAY SO I’ve been seeing a lot of really BAD white/queer takes on Encanto over the past few days since it went up on D+. I mean, I’m white and queer and I’m not even picking up any of these steaming piles of dogshit y’all are putting down about this movie, like WOW.

I will say if you’re in the camp of “Abuela/the family are toxic and should have been punished” or “Mirabel should have just left them”, I highly recommend you actually talk to some real Colombian people about generational trauma before you spout your personal projecting onto a children’s film. Because this is yet another case of y’all trying to make it about you when it isn’t.

If you have personal qualms with the film, then fine. But that doesn’t make it a bad film just cuz it didn’t go the way you think it should have. Because it ain’t about you. So walk it back. For a bunch of people who claimed to be “waking up” back in 2020, you still got a LOT of unlearning to do.

Aside from dealing with a few asks, I'm going to put the Wattpad discussion to bed for now. However, I've seen nothing that adequately addresses my concerns about the topic at all, but we have yet to see how this will shake out. The phrasing of the deal is really alarming when it comes to the rights of authors and creators involved. No major corporation cares about offering you a fair contract without representation, period. It's worth being very concerned about.

However, I know many creators don't have many easy options when it comes shifting their work. Wattpad offers a readerbase that may not follow you to other website, and it enables you options that other places don't. Leaving Wattpad and Webtoons is not easy for some people, and you shouldn't feel pressured to make a decision that won't work out for you. Here are my conclusions on the matter, but you should make decisions based on your own feelings on the matter, not anyone else's.

Should you remove your fanfiction from Wattpad? I'd say yes, with a few caveats. Websites like AO3 aren't going to make shitty deals like this, and are easy to use and is an active comminuty. However, this deal is trolling for the biggest fanfics, those that would be the easiest to convert to a quickly made movie. If you write for a small fandom and worry your readers won't find you elsewhere, you are probably fine. I still overwhelmingly recommend switching to another platform regardless of whether or not your work would get caught up in this kind of thing.

Should you remove your original work from Wattpad? This is a harder decision to make, because there aren't a lot of platforms out there to host original work. It is always better to have more control over your own content. I would recommend considering hosting them elsewhere - your own website, using Patreon, etc. Look into indie publishing, as while that's not an easy path, it can be a successful one. Just give it some thought on what the best approach would be for you.

Should Webtoon creators pull their work? This one is far more murky, as the platform is probably one of the best ways to get your comic seen, and comic creators would likely be looking at a completely different reality when it comes contracts and furthering their work. I'd say no for now, but do talk to your fellow comic creators about their feelings on the matter, and do not sign any contract without fully understanding it or obtaining an agent first. We'd all like you to get that Netflix adaption of your dreams. We also want you to get adequately compensated for it.
