Victorian Chippendale oval dining table extends with a crank mechanism from 53" to 83.5" with the two leaves in place. The table is constructed of English oak and executed in the Chippendale style, indicated by the carved-knee cabriole legs ending in dragon claw and ball feet on original casters. We have edited some photos to show what the table looks like without the casters as well as with. The apron is enhanced with blocks and a plain molded edge and houses the brass lined hole for the crank. The crank mechanism carries its metal trade label from Joseph Fitter, owner of Britannia Works, Birmingham, patentee and sole manufacturer of the Double Action Screw Table Expander. Britannia Works was in business from 1864 through 1922, although a later ad from 1939 indicates the business was around somewhat longer than 1922. SIZE: 41.5" deep 53" closed 83.5" open with two leaves in place 29.5" high 24.5" to apron Table comes with its two original leaves and crank. You can use table without leaf or with one leaf or two. G-Plan Quadrille nest tables designed by Roger Bennett for E. Gomme. The Quadrille Range debuted in 1965. The nesting tables were featured in the G-Plan New Models Folder of 1967. The tables were promoted by G-Plan throughout the 1970s. Manufacturing of this design ceased in 1991. Roger Bennett attended High Wycombe Technical College where Gordon Gray and Richard Young were also students and Lucian Ercolani of Ercol Furniture was a teacher. Bennett joined G-Plan as a designer in 1962. Sales were down at the time. Bennett's Quadrille Range appealed to the buying public and saved G-Plan. Tall ( 32" ) pair aged leather obelisks enhanced with embossed gold decoration were designed in the late-20th century by Paul Maitland-Smith for Theodore Alexander. Paul Maitland-Smith was an antiques dealer in London beginning in the 1950s. He expanded into selling reproduction furniture - the market that became his specialty - and established Maitland-Smith Ltd. in 1979, collaborating with well-known designers such as Tony Duquette, Celerie Kemble and Susan Hable Smith, and founded Theodore and Alexander in 1996. The Egyptians carved and placed stone obelisks at temple entrances to represent sun rays in honor of the Sun God, Ra. The Romans took a fancy to the Egyptian design, resulting in the placement of obelisks throughout the Roman Empire. The concept of the obelisk has influenced cultures around the world, including those in South America, France, Italy, United States of America, and Ethiopia. August Ungethüm Kunst Mobelfabrik, Wien, buffetschrank ( buffet cabinet ) from 1905 is among the finest examples of Vienna Secession movement furniture. A version of this sideboard model from the collection of the Austrian Museum of Applied Arts is featured in the Art Nouveau furniture book, "Möbel des Jugendstils: Sammlung des Österreichischen Museums für Angewandte Kunst" by Vera J. Behal ( see image ). The description in the book attributes this design to the architect August Ungethüm, Junior, based on comparisons with some published furniture designs by him as the company's co-owner. The August Ungethüm buffet was produced during the 1902 to 1906 period when the company was manufacturing dinner suites comprising the main sideboard, a smaller sideboard, a long-case clock, a dining table, and six chairs. A tin furniture label is attached at the top of the central cabinet frame interior. The label reads, "Kunst-Mobel-Fabrik August Ungethüm, Wien, V. Obere Amtshausgasse Nr. 27". This main buffet will suit interiors featuring design elements related to the Vienna Secession, Art Nouveau, École de Nancy, Jugendstil, and Arts & Crafts and will complement furniture designs by Otto Wyrtlik, Koloman Moser, and Joseph Maria Olbrich. SIZE: 85" wide x 30" deep x 87" high Buffet breaks down into three pieces for transport - the top, the base, and the marble top. Main Buffet is in stock in the USA and ready for pickup, shipment, and delivery.
