My name is Jack Frost, and I’m a guardian. How do I know that? Because the moon told me so. So If the moon tells you something…believe it.
RISE OF THE GUARDIANS 2012 | dir. Peter Ramsey
My name is Jack Frost – how do I know that? The moon told me so.
happy anniversary, Rise of the Guardians! - 11/21/12
bits and pieces of inktober?
Okay, but imagine a lonely Daud sitting on a roof top looking out at the ocean under a full moon and deciding to summon Thomas. Then Thomas shows up like “What?” looking around really confused. “Sir…?” “Just sit.”
When I think about it, your presence implies a great deal. It’s very impressive, that you survived Delilah and made it down here to Karnaca, all without the aid of your infamous father.
Listening to the new episode, I could tell right away that something was off about Peter’s voice. It just didn’t sound right, but I couldn’t put my finger on why.
And then I got a message in my inbox from compsognathids, who pointed it out exactly:
The person Juno sees in his dream isn’t Peter. It’s Rex Glass. His voice is curt, clipped, even in pitch, and it comes very much from the front of his mouth.
Perseus Shah has a similar voice, but it’s less clipped. He drags his syllables out more, like he’s ending every other sentence with an elipses, when he isn’t ending them with at least one exclamation point. It’s a very dramatic voice.
Duke Rose’s voice kind of bounces around his mouth, mostly because he puts just so much emphasis on so many words, but it’s generally high and fluttery, with a bit of star-struck stammering.
Peter’s natural voice is less dressed up, his voice comes from somewhere further back in his head. Not quite in his throat, but maybe the middle-to-back of his mouth. It’s a little rougher, a little lower. He talks fast, but his annunciation isn’t nearly so clipped or careful– he’s just talking that fast because that’s the speed he’s thinking at.
I think all of this really speaks to Noah Simes’ talent as a voice actor. The differences are so subtle that it’s hard to really pin them down until you listen to them side by side, but they’re still big enough that when he played an unexpected incarnation of Peter, it was damn hard to ignore.
I was talking with @the-greymarch a few days ago about the Night Mother and started thinking about the Black Sacrament and the Five Tenets from a Nocturnal and the Nightingales stance, like a business agreement of sorts. And honestly? I feel like it works.
If the Night Mother hears the Sacrament being performed and whispers that information to the Listener, then if the Brotherhood agrees to take the contract, they owe the Night Mother, right? The Brotherhood doesn't have a way of hearing about EVERY Sacrament performed; they only hear about rumors of it being performed. Motierre would never have been found if not for the Night Mother, since he was so isolated in that old Nordic Ruin. Therefore, the Skyrim Dark Brotherhood owes the Night Mother for providing them information about the potential contract.
The terms of service for using the information the Night Mother provides are to follow the Five Tenets, which include not dishonoring the Night Mother. You used the service she provided, now here are the terms. Simple as that. The Five Tenets don't even require worship of her. Simply put: don't dishonor the night mother, don't betray the brotherhood, don't refuse orders from a superior, don't steal from siblings, and don't kill your siblings. The Five Tenets aren't even that bad.
I cannot fault the Skyrim Dark Brotherhood for not following the Five Tenets or "The Old Ways" (whatever that means) during the years without a Night Mother. Having your prayers go unanswered must have been extremely difficult and even painful, but ultimately they were under no obligation to. No whispers of the Night Mother means no services provided means no terms must be followed. So they're off the hook all those years.
However, the second Astrid learned of the Emperor contract meant one of two things. 1) she is either admitting this group of assassins is no longer The Dark Brotherhood, as she rejects a contract by the Night Mother. The religion of the Dark Brotherhood is the only thing that sets them apart of any other group of assassins, so failure to accept a contract from her when finally given the chance is actively turning your back on The Dark Brotherhood. Or 2) She accepts the terms and conditions from the Night Mother by later accepting the contract. That means she does, in fact, have to follow the Tenets. You don't have to worship the Night Mother and Sithis, but not dishonoring her is now something you agreed to. It's not even that difficult, really. But breaking that Tenet (along with all the others) makes your life forfeit, since the penalty for not following the terms of service is "to invoke the Wrath of Sithis".
Essentially, the Skyrim Dark Brotherhood was in fault obligated to follow the Five Tenets once they agreed to take the Emperor contract as payment for the Night Mother telling them about it. If we believe the Tenets work as a sort of agreement in exchange for the services the Night Mother provides.
You wanna keep your family safe from the Penitus Oculatus? Have you considered not breaking a Tenet and instead being the clever Matron expected of you, and moving your family to a secret and secure location since you now know Falkreath is compromised? Paranoid about being usurped? Well yeah that's how the leadership of the Dark Brotherhood works; the Listener is in charge here, boss lady Night Mother said so. Got a problem with that? Sorry, you agreed to not dishonor the Night Mother, and that includes her decisions regarding leadership.
Ultimately whatever context for Astrid's actions still show that breaking the Tenets was not in fact forced on her or the best option in a difficult situation. I personally see the burning of the Sanctuary as allowed by the Night Mother in a similar way to her allowing the HoK/Silencer to kill off the Black Hand in Oblivion. They failed to catch the traitor, Astrid broke multiple Tenets (that she agreed to follow by accepting the Emperor contract). The punishment for that was death - not necessarily by the Wrath of Sithis, but permitted to happened by Sithis and the Night Mother.
Cool motive, still broke a Tenet.
Astrid was still Matron of the Sanctuary, she was still superior to everyone EXCEPT the Listener, so there was really no reason NOT to start following the Tenets again anyway. In fact, her rule of “bottom line, respect your family” pretty much covers the Tenets.
Don’t betray the Brotherhood or reveal its secrets? Respect your family.
Don’t steal from your siblings? Respect your family
Don’t kill your siblings? Respect your family.
Follow your orders? Astrid expected that anyway.
The only thing that would have changed would’ve been respecting the Night Mother, and Astrid could have seen her family prosper again. She brought it on herself, but it’s a damn shame that she took the rest of the Sanctuary with her.
Like yeah Astrid, the only Tenet you all don't follow before the LDB shows up is #1. And that was because they're all pretty reasonable requests. Hell, even not dishonoring the Night Mother is a pretty minimal requirement. Be respectful to your boss.
It's her acceptance of Following The Tenets Or Else in exchange for the Emperor contract that makes her act of breaking every single Tenet actually punishable, and tragically so many other members of the Brotherhood had to pay for her inability to follow an agreement and effectively lead the Brotherhood.
I like the idea that the Dovahkiin’s thuum gets stronger the more souls they consume (and possibly go a little nuts after consuming so many souls in such a little time).
When Aerys gets to be around 200, she can’t use her Thuum around the public or near cities anymore. The lightning from her stormcall can strike a dragon dead, her unrelenting force can turn buildings into dust, her fire shout can burn down a city in an instant- she has to be careful with her thuum and how she chooses to use it/who she uses it around because of how dangerous it’s become
When she was younger and just started fighting dragons, she’d consume maybe 10 souls a day give or take?? And it pushed her into a really dangerous place due to how much power she had coursing through her, and she literally had to isolate herself on Sky Haven for awhile to fight the weird feelings of domination and power that started pulsing in her.
Animal Allegiance calls to practically every living beast in the hold to come to aid
Battle Fury allows for companion’s weapons to kill in one blow (especially good for Aerys to use during the civil war)
Bend Will can bring entire holds and cities to their knees
Cyclone can reduce High Hrothgar, mountain and all, to rubble
Dragon Rend completely disarms a dragon, rendering them unable to use their thuum and practically shattering the bones in their wings
Drain vitality just reduces enemies to a withered husk
etc etc etc
Disarm shatters all weapons in a large radius
Call of valor summons a horde of warriors of sovngarde
Aura whisper can let them sense everyone in a city
Become ethereal can last for hours
Call dragon doesn’t just call out to Odahviing but literally summons him to the dragonborn
Clear skies can end a hurricane
Dismay leaves targets traumatized for the rest of their lives
Elemental fury lets them swing their weapon so fast that it can cut through stone like air
Ice form can preserve an entire town (and the frozen corpses of its citizens) for years
Soul tear can let them wipe out an army, collect their souls, and bring them back as a horde of obiedient undead
Slow time freezes time
Throw voice releases multiple voices and whispers that haunt the targets for weeks
And if they learn Alduin’s meteor storm, they could bring about the apocalypse with three words
Frost Dragons; sunset, dusk and dawn.
