Patch Downtime Checklist and Ideas
Donât know what to do while FFXIV is down for the patch? Hereâs some ideas!
- Hygiene! Shower/bath, shave, trim nails, etc. Use the extra time you might have to relax and enjoy your shower/bath. Use that bath bomb thatâs been sitting unused for the past few months. Pamper yourself. ^.^
- Catch up on laundry and chores. Even if you just do a little bit each day, it goes a long way. Get laundry in right away, then while thatâs going, do some dusting/vacuuming. Or make sure your dishes are clean. Â
-  Stock up on food/Refill Prescriptions if needed. Make your list ahead of time, and if available, use online ordering/curbside pickup for low-contact and time-saving. Running low on food and funds? Check out your local food bank distributions and schools! Many are simply âshow up, get foodâ, no questions asked, especially during this time. Look on school websites or their Facebook pages, or google âfood distribution near meâ for details. Â
- Meal prep or at least plan out your meals for the day/week, so youâre not scrambling for what to eat last-minute. Donât feel like cooking on patch day and have a crockpot/Instant pot? Prep your ingredients today, then tomorrow morning, toss them into a crockpot and let it do the cooking! Then when youâre hungry, all you have to do is dish up and eat! Want easy cleanup as well? Get some crockpot liners!Â
- Need recipe ideas? Check out Yummly, AllRecipes, Tasty, Delish, or just a simple google search. The FREE Yummly app lets you filter recipes based on what you have in your pantry.
- Do something different! Go for a walk (maybe finally open Pokemon Go or Wizards Unite that youâve left unchecked for months), exercise or stretch, play some music, read a book, watch a movie/show, or play some other games from your backlog. Try your hand at a craft or something new.Â
- Make your list of what you want/need to get done once the patch hits. Think Unlock locations, where new gear will be, or if youâre a crafter/gatherer, where new nodes/items are, custom deliveries, Ishgard Restoration, new recipes, etc. Once the Database is updated, this will help with your prep too. The folks on FFXIV Reddit made a great list of where to unlock all of the new things: https://www.reddit.com/r/ffxiv/comments/i72ain/where_to_unlock_patch_53/
- Rest up! Set an alarm (or ten across the room so you have to get up) to wake up if you âdonât want to miss a thing.â Get some much needed sleep tonight. Too excited and having trouble sleeping? Try some of these things:
- Listen to some form of white noise (donât have a white noise machine? Check out the FREE âWhite Noiseâ app which has so many to choose from)
- Try aromatherapy (room sprays, incense (only while awake if using ones that require a flame), or essential oil diffusers (if you have pets, make sure the oil you choose isnât harmful to them)).
- Read a book in bed
- Limit being on a device for the hour before you get into bed
- Listen to relaxing music or ASMR
-Â Try some meditation, mindfulness, or breathing techniques like the â4-7-8 methodâ
- Drink a soothing and relaxing beverage like Chamomile or âSleepytimeâ Tea or warmed milk or hot cocoa.
- Mind racing? Try writing down your thoughts for the day in a journal (even if you plan on burning it later).
- Do showers/baths relax you more than energize you? Try taking your shower/bath before bed.
- Supplements/Medication (if cleared by your doctor)
https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/ways-to-fall-asleep
https://www.sleepfoundation.org/articles/healthy-sleep-tips
https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/teas-that-help-you-sleep#1
- Wake up! Get your download started! While youâre waiting for the download, brush teeth, get dressed (even if itâs just clean comfy lounging clothes for the day), eat some breakfast (or a little snack), coffee or beverage of choice, get your dinner in the crockpot (if applicable).
- Breaks! Remember to take food/drink/potty/stretching/posture breaks. Help your eyes too! âTo prevent eyestrain, try to rest your eyes when using the computer for long periods. Rest your eyes for 15 minutes after two hours of continuous computer use. Also, for every 20 minutes of computer viewing, look into the distance for 20 seconds to allow your eyes a chance to refocus.â
https://www.aoa.org/patients-and-public/caring-for-your-vision/protecting-your-vision/computer-vision-syndrome
- Medication! Remember to take any medication or vitamins youâre on. Set an alarm if needed if you think you might get distracted from all the shiny new things in game.
Enjoy the patch and stay hydrated!Â

If you listen closely to your intuition you will always know what is âbestâ for you, because what is best for you is what is true for you.

There is a language older by far and deeper than words. It is the language of bodies, of body on body, wind on snow, rain on trees, wave on stone. It is the language of dream, gesture, symbol, memory. We have forgotten this language. We do not even remember that it exists.
Derrick Jensen (via quotemadness)
It is very frustrating not to be understood in this world. If you say one thing and keep being told that you mean something else, it can make you want to scream. But somewhere in the world there is a place for all of us.
Lemony Snicket (via quotemadness)
Words are but the vague shadows of the volumes we mean. Little audible links, they are, chaining together great inaudible feelings and purposes.

The more anger you hold towards your past, the less capable you are of loving life in the present.

Why âBurnoutâ Is Okay - The Creativity Cycle
â One of the biggest fears writers face is burnout, or âwriterâs blockâ. However, thereâs always a way to look at the positives in a situation. Please take the following to heart: Not actively creating is okay, as long as you continue to your goals in another way.
Do not ever beat yourself up over not having the momentum to keep creating actively, 24/7. You need days where you relax and research and find inspiration. Itâs not laziness. Itâs an important part of the creative process. Thereâs a fabulous visual by emcheeseman on Twitter that was made for artists and explains this really well.
The Three Stages Of The Creativity Cycle
There are three stages to the creativity cycle; Action, The Middle, and Recovery.Â
The Middle Ground
If youâre coming down from the action stage, youâre not quite burnt out, but youâre also not as full of creative energy as you might have been last week. Your creations arenât popping out as quickly and youâre finding that you take more breaks, do less in one sitting, and would rather take it slow and figure out some world building for upcoming scenes or write some experimental blurbs, rather than keep writing at full speed.
Or, if youâre coming out of the recovery stage, youâre not at 100% yet, but you have the motivation to do something, such as the activities I used as examples above.
During The Action Stage
Youâre actively creating. Youâre, how one would say, on a roll. Your visions and ideas are coming to life and youâre using all of your energy to create, rather than research or recharge. You should be using the momentum youâve built up in the middle ground to write, and write a lot.
The Recovery Stage
You have had enough of writing for hours and hours at a time and you need some rest. Your brain is tired and youâre finding it more difficult to get excited about your project. Itâs time to let yourself breathe. Give yourself time to do absolutely nothing, distance yourself from your project, and take in some material to help you get inspired again.Â
You need to input content into your head. Read, watch tv shows, watch movies, go out in the world, try new things, have new experiences, visit new places, etc. This is super important to this stage. If you donât consume other work or things that will help you generate ideas once you have the energy again, you will not bounce back to the high energy production phase you hope to be on again.Â
So What?
Just remember that creativity, no matter what art form you practice, is a cycle that you canât stop in one place. Nobody can always be in a place where they can happily create every single day without faltering. Youâre human, youâre an artist, and you need to accept that there are multiple ways you can work toward your goal, even when youâre âburnt outâ. Itâs all part of the process.
Happy writing!

MY CURRENT WORK IN PROGRESS (Check it out, itâs pretty cool. At least I think it is.)
This is very astute.Â
Iâve found that my creative output definitely comes in cycles, and itâs an especially weird-looking wave because it oscillates between several types of creativity.Â
Sometimes I am fired up to write nonfiction, and all I can work on are blog posts and guides and analysis and editorials.Â
Sometimes Iâm geared up to do fiction, and my brain is full of story ideas and the energy to write them.Â
I am almost never both of those at the same time.Â
each of those has an active recovery phase as well. Iâve learned to just sort of ride these waves and capitalize on what I can do when I have the capacity to do it, rather than trying to force myself to do what IÂ âshouldâ be doing at any given point, because thatâs just swimming against the current.Â

My Biggest and Most Annoying Fictional Horse Pet Peeve
Big Horses are a Very New Thing and they Likely Didnât Exist in your Historical and/or Fantasy Settings.
Youâve all seen it in every historical piece of media ever produced. Contrary to popular belief, a big black horse with long legs and long flowing mane is not a widespread or even a particularly old type of horse.
THIS IS NOT A MEDIEVAL THING. THIS IS NOT EVEN A BAROQUE THING. THIS IS A NINETEENTH CENTURY CITY CARRIAGE HORSE.
All the love to fancy Friesian horses, but your Roman general or Medieval country heroine just really couldnât, wouldnât, and for the sake of my mental health shouldnât have ridden one either.
Big warmblood horses are a Western European and British invention that started popping up somewhere around 1700s when agriculture and warfare changed, and when rich folks wanted Bigger Faster Stronger Thinner race horses. The modern warmblood and the big continental draught both had their first real rise to fame in the 1800s when people started driving Fancy Carriages everywhere, and having the Fanciest Carriage started to mean having the Tallest and Thinnest Horses in the town.
Before mechanised weaponry and heavy artillery all horses used to be small and hardy easy-feeders. Kinda like a donkey but easier to steer and with a back thatâs not as nasty and straight to sit on.
SOME REAL MEDIEVAL, ROMAN, OTTOMAN, MONGOL, VIKING, GREEK and WHATEVER HISTORICALLY PLAUSIBLE HORSES FOR YOU:
âPrimitiveâ, native breeds all over the globe tend to be only roughly 120-140 cm (12.0 - 13.3 hh) tall at the withers. They all also look a little something like this:
Mongolian native horse (Around 120-130 at the withers, and decendants of the first ever domesticated horses from central Asia. Still virtually unchanged from Chinggis Khanâs cavalry, ancestor to many Chinese, Japanese and Indian horses, and bred for speed racing and surviving outdoors without the help of humans.)
Carpathian native horse / Romanian and Polish Hucul Pony (Around 120-150 at the withers, first mentioned in writing during the 400s as wild mountain ponies, depicted before that in Trajanian Roman sculptures, used by the Austro-Hungarian cavalry in the 19th century)
Middle-Eastern native horse / Caspian Pony (Around 100-130 at the withers, ancestor of the Iranian Asil horse and its decendants, including the famous Arabian and Barb horses, likely been around since Darius I the Great, 5th century BC, and old Persian kings are often depicted riding these midgets)
Baltic Sea native horse / Icelandic, Finnish, Estonian, Gotland and Nordland horses (Around 120-150 at the withers, descendant of Mongolian horses, used by viking traders in 700-900 AD and taken to Iceland. Later used by the Swedish cavalry in the 30 years war and by the Finnish army in the Second World War, nowadays harness racing and draught horses)
Siberian native horse / Yakutian pony (Around 120-140 at the withers, related to Baltic and Mongolian horses and at least as old, as well-adapted to Siberian climate as woolly mammoths once were, the hairiest horse there is, used in draught work and herding)
Mediterranean native horse / Skyros pony, Sardinian Giara, Monterufolino (Around 100-140 at the Withers, used and bred by ancient Greeks for cavalry use, influenced by African and Eastern breeds, further had its own influence on Celtic breeds via Roman Empire, still used by park ranger officers in Italy)
British Islesâ native horse / various âMountain & Moorlandâ pony breeds (Around 100-150 at the withers, brought over and mixed by Celts, Romans and Vikings, base for almost every modern sport pony and the deserving main pony of all your British Medieval settings. Some populations still live as feral herds in the British countryside, used as war mounts, draught horses, mine pit ponies, hunting help and race horses)
So hey, now you know!
I love this so much - and now I know why Tall Lanky Thin horses have a terryfying vibe to them, and the âprimitiveâ native pony-like breeds awake in me only hope and trust.
