I don’t want to make it sound like pre-Tumblr fandom was perfect, because it was not. The fandoms I cut my teeth on had their problems—hello, slash communities that celebrated queer men while being openly disgusted by queer women, I bet you didn’t contribute to me coming out in my twenties at all! But no matter how epic the post-mortem reports were (and oh, they were epic), these problems were always internal. And people have been fighting over ships since the dawn of time. Star Trek fans complained about all the Kirk/Spock fic in ‘zines, Sherlock Holmes fans have grumbled about Sherlock/Irene because she barely interacts with him in the Doyle canon, and the ancient Greeks argued over whether Achilles and Patroclus were an item or not. But attitudes towards shipping have definitely changed in the Tumblr era. What was once the love of two characters’ dynamic has become, to a small but outspoken subsection of fans, a zero-sum game. How did we get from “God, I love seeing these two together” to “These two need to be together, so help me God?" To answer that question, we must go back to the early aughts. (Please do not look directly into the chunky highlights and bootcut jeans, we all made mistakes then and none of us are free from sin.) Specifically, we must got back to Harry Potter and… THE HARMONY WARS. (Pew pew! Wizard noises! Wizard noises! Epic opening scrawl!)
I don’t know how I missed this piece from Clare McBride, but it’s an incredibly thorough argument for HP as being the start of what has since become a strong fandom cultural shift–and, I think, a vital read for anyone trying to engage with creator/audience dynamics as a whole. As someone caught in between (adjacent to creatives, and on the path to becoming one, but also adjacent to fandom, and still situated somewhat in them), it’s often hard not to feel like the conversation about what it means to discourse with fandom is incomplete. The case McBride makes here, that it comes down to a lack of understanding and education in fandom history, is one that I have made before, and one I really urge those on both sides of the issue to dive into.
I always told myself I’d write as if toxic fandom didn’t exist, but I know now it’s a comforting lie. It’s not an additive influence for me, however — it’s subtractive. There are two characters I cannot imagine myself ever writing about again as long as I maintain a functional presence on the internet; it’s simply not worth it even breathing their names in the reply to a Tumblr ask, much less typing them into a manuscript. I know to do so would be to at least temporarily render my asks, replies, and comments unusable for anything else.
Maybe one day I’ll ghost and let the internet war unknown to me, but I’m not yet ready to depart antisocial media just yet. It would feel like I was turning my back on a particular form of connectivity and society.
One time Harry wanted to embarrass Draco in 5th year so he cast a spell to change Draco’s shoes into stilettos when he entered the Great Hall but instead of tripping he just kept walking like a pro and now one of Hogwarts’ greatest mysteries is where Draco Malfoy learned to strut in heels
And the award for most relatable Harry Potter quote goes to:
“No, I’m fine,” said Harry, wondering why he kept telling people this, and wondering whether he had ever been less fine.
Hogwarts Houses common rooms in Halloween season
Harry Potter and Ron Weasley
Bromance
okay but imagine that james wasn’t in the house that halloween. he was talking to dumbledore or out to get groceries or anything that has him out of the house. so lily is home alone but she still sacrifices herself for her son, so the curse still rebounds and hits voldemort and “kills” him. so harry is still the boy who lived, but james is alive.
and of course it’s awful. it’s a terrible moment, burying lily. james is devestated and has no idea how he’s going to raise harry alone. he has to testify that peter betrayed the order, because he’s alive to pass on the knowledge that peter was his secret keeper, not sirius. sirius doesn’t go to prison because he’s too busy helping james cope with lily’s death to go after peter, and peter’s already faked his death by the time he can leave james.
remus and sirius move in with james to help take care of harry, because he swears he can’t do it on his own. remus doesn’t have to focus on rent and food money because james tells him he’s family, so he can focus on a job he actually enjoys such as editing or writing, something freelance so he can take full moons off and no one will wonder why.
sirius refuses to get any job beside full time babysitter, curls up as padfoot and keeps harry warm and safe, especially when the boy gets older and starts having nightmares about what happened to his mom.
harry is raised in the wizarding world, with the most protective family of anyone he’s ever met, and invites ron and hermione over to his house during the summer and somehow padfoot always gets them into some sort of trouble.
when harry goes through hardships at hogwarts, he always has his dad to turn to. james would stroke his hair back from his forehead and kiss his son’s scar and remind him, “your mother was the most brilliant witch there ever was and she’s watching over you, so you’ll never have to worry.”
even when pettigrew comes back and revives voldemort, james is on the quidditch pitch the minute harry comes back with the cup and cedric’s dead body, remus and sirius right behind him and swearing he’ll destroy anyone who doesn’t take his son seriously.
the fight at the ministry harry’s fifth year, james would remind sirius to keep focused, remind him not to get overwhelmed with adrenaline and to focus, and would watch not just harry’s back but his best friends’ too. when he sees sirius too focused on making fun to notice bellatrix amazing a curse straight at him, he dives in front of it to push sirius out of the way and ends up in St. Mungo’s after the fight, a little bruised and battered but with promises that he’ll heal and a sheepish apology from Padfoot in the former of an old, drool covered chew toy.
when harry disappears seventh year, he and james keep in contact with the magical mirrors that belonged to sirius and james paces the kitchen every evening, listening to potterwatch and shrugging off Sirius’ shoulder on his hand telling him that their boy will be okay because he’s incredibly smart and incredibly brave and honestly mate how’d you make such an amazing boy?
and then the fight at hogwarts happens. remus and sirius have each other’s backs and james just wants to find harry. he does, a little too late, being carried out of the woods in hagrid’s arms. he breaks down and drops to his knees and remus and sirius look at each other and think, “there is no way we can fix him after this.”
but then harry is back and voldemort is dead and james’ face is tear stained and they’re all worn out and bruised but their family is alive and sirius, a little hesitantly, offers, “…so who wants ice cream?”
Ow my heart.
Well fuck
Wizarding Tattoo Parlors.
I know it has been talked about before but I want to talk about wizarding tattoos and piercing again. Here’s just a couple ideas.
A tongue ring that you wear to ward off minor hexes and jinxes.
A Tattoo of a tree where the leaves change depending on the season.
A pair of matching tattoos of a piece of parchment that can be wrote on to send messages.
You see this dagger I have tattooed on my calf? It comes off into my hand as a real weapon when I’m in danger.
A little dragon that flies around your left forearm.
A pin-up witch that winks and waves at you.
A tattoo that starts off as a rune but once you fall asleep and wake up in changes into something that is similar to your patronus, something that symbolizes who you are.
A tattoo on somebodies wrist that warms up and changes color when they need to take their medications.
Ear piercings that translate everything around you into your native language.
Lip piercing that do the same, except when you speak you speak the language of whoever you’re speaking to.
A small bird tattoo behind your ear that chirps and whistles to you when you’re anxious.
A tattoo of your child that ages with them.
A tattoo for those that are hard of hearing or deaf and are unable to read lips at that moment that displays the words of the person speaking to them on their hand.
A nose ring that is charmed that long as you are wearing it you will never lose your keys.
A flower scene where some flowers only will bloom at certain times.
little nocturnal animal tattoos like raccoons that only show up on your skin after dark.
a tattoo of digital numbers on your wrist that tell the time.
Magical tattoos and piercings!!!
This is the best thing.
There’s a difference between being misunderstood and being misguided. Draco and his Slytherin friends are misinformed and misguided by their parents, they are not misunderstood. They were awful, they did horrible things, they weren’t secretly non-bigoted underneath. They can learn from their mistakes and grow up to be better people, that still doesn’t mean their past actions are excusable or that Harry was prejudiced to dislike them. They earned his dislike, they can earn his/others forgiveness too.
there is a clear distinction between gof sirius and ootp sirius so let’s talk about it because it’s all i’ve thought about for days.
in gof, sirius lives in a fucking cave eating rats in order to be near harry during the triwizard tournament. this is a decision that puts sirius in danger – being so close to hogwarts with ministry officials prowling around could easily land him back in azkaban. but here’s the thing: sirius doesn’t choose to live in hogsmeade for a laugh, or for his own personal gratification. he did it to protect harry – in the cave scene, when the trio ask what he’s doing, the first thing he says is “fulfilling my duty as godfather.”
and he is. because throughout gof, sirius gives advice, guidance, and comfort to harry. he tells him not to take unnecessary risks, to stay safe, to focus on getting through the tournament alive. sirius chastises harry after he finds out that he went into the forest with krum, he offers sympathy when harry talks about the fight he has with ron, and also, he lived in a cave and survived on rats just to be close in case harry ran into danger.
consistently throughout gof, sirius is a comforting presence to harry. he is intelligent, protective, and even paternal. this is sirius black at his best.
and sirius black at his best stands in stark contrast to the man we see in ootp: angry, mercurial, moody. reckless. he constantly makes bad, impulsive decisions: seeing the kids off at king’s cross, popping into the gryffindor fire, picking fights with snape. in ootp, sirius causes harry more worry than he assuages – directly conflicting with his goal of fulfilling his duty. not to mention, his treatment of harry, which is in direct opposition to what he displayed in gof: now, he encourages harry, compares him to james, even guilts him – “you’re less like your father than i thought.” that’s a shitty, low thing to say to the boy you’ve sworn to protect.
and all of this is leading up to the crux of the matter: sirius’s obvious illness. he’s depressed, he shows signs of bipolar disorder, he has tendencies toward alcoholism. he’s likely dealing with some form of PTSD after twelve years in azkaban. these things are true of sirius no matter where he is, but in gof, he’s in a healthier state – ironically, given his living conditions.
the trigger for sirius’s behavior in ootp is grimmauld place. it’s imprisonment, it’s being locked up in a house that he loathed, one that he was almost definitely emotionally abused in. it’s being kept from having an active role in the order, it’s being goaded by snape, it’s being stuck and unable to help, all in a place that represents everything he spent his teenage years trying to escape.
hermione consistently points to sirius’s instability, says that she thinks he’s being unwise, and when harry takes it as an insult on his mental state – it isn’t an insult, it’s a correct observation – hermione says that he’s been lonely for a very long time. and she’s right. in ootp, we see the effects of all of this on sirius, and they’re invariably negative in the extreme.
it’s heartbreaking to see the contrast here, because in one book we see the best of sirius: loyal, selfless, protective, and loving. immediately following, we see the worst.
but even at his worst, even amid his own battles with illness coupled with the fucking infuriating things about sirius black, he protects harry. he goes to the ministry to fight because harry is in danger, and he dies protecting harry.
sirius was fucked up but even at his worst, he still fought for harry in the end because there was no way in hell the person he loves more than anything else could be in danger without him there to protect him. he lost his duel with bellatrix because he underestimated her, because he’s prone to losing himself in the thrill of the fight, because he couldn’t resist the temptation to goad someone he loathed.
but he went into the ministry that night to protect harry. he would have done it for james, sirius, remus, peter, or lily at twenty; he would have done it healthy in gof; and he did it as sick as he was in ootp.
in spite of everything that happened to him – and everything intrinsic to him, all the cruelty and grudges he clings to by nature – sirius is a good person.
because there is nothing sirius black would not sacrifice for a person he loves.
Happy September first loves. To honour going back to Hogwarts, here’s a Gryffindor common room inspired commission I just recently finished. ⚡️
Draco: Why does everyone always assume the worst of me?
Harry: It saves time.
Draco: Granger, I expected more from you.
Harry: What, you don't expect more from me?
Draco: All I'm hoping for out of you is a haircut.
Happy Birthday Harry!!
god knows how many birthdays this poor baby had to spend like this:(
Commissions are open!
LOOK I KNOW THIS DOESN`T ACTUALLY WORK BUT I CAN`T BRING MYSELF TO MAKE HARRY A SLYTHERIN. I just cant >:D
But Harry could still potentially hang out in the Slytherin Common room and Draco would just sneer at whoever gives him a stupid comment about it, and eventually people would just get used to it, being like “Hey Potter, how´s it going?” or “Did you already finish your homework for potions? I heard Granger lets you copy hers, can I maybe have a look at it?”and everything would be good. Harry would probably always want to sit in front of the fireplace and Draco, who usually sits in one of the cozy chairs near the windows, finally gives in and starts getting comfy, lounging around on the sofa. IT COULD ALL BE GOOD. Also massive shoutout to the two lovely beans @carryonsimoncarryon and @baz-n-simon who basically made me ship it (do I ship it? Do I not ship it? I´m still so confused about it)
