Possibly my spiciest take is that it's actually good to have people you respect and like that have some dogshit takes.
I think part of what is making young people lonelier, in discussing why they're increasingly isolated, is that they're so afraid of meeting someone who doesn't hold their same beliefs, and instead of being just core beliefs it is kinda ancillary shit.
It's actually okay to disagree even on social topics! Even on some political ones! But I mean, online you can start with "i love this mutual but they have a really bad/uninformed opinion about x media"
I know this is IMMEDIATELY going to be taken in bad faith, and yes babygirl, you are so right, I DO want you to go make best friends with both the KKK grand wizard AND your nearest nazi leader.
But seriously, as someone who has spent two decades doing community organization: finding ways to connect with different people is so so so important. There are people i follow here who ate 80% smart and their brain falls out of their head 20% of the time and that is GOOD FOR MY MENTAL ECOSYSTEM AND GOOD FOR LEARNING HOW TO BE A PERSON
LET'S ALL GO PISS ON THE POOR
Itβs also good to assume you probably are the friend whose brain falls out 20% of the time.
We all have blind spots, assumptions, and dogshit take from time to time. They canβt all be winners.

my dad's been saying stuff like "bet" and "no cap" recently and honestly I thought he was doing a bit, but it turns out a few months ago his job moved him next to some of the young people in the office, so now my almost-retirement-age father just actually talks like this I guess
he was telling me today about how one of these Young Peopleβ’ used to be a hockey player, and coincidentally one of the 30-somethings in the office used to be a referee. and the ex-ref likes to tell stories about how many times he had to break up fights the younger guy started, and they hang out all the time, and haha it's so funny they ended up at the same boring office job, and man...some romance writer or AU fic author out there must be feeling their eye twitching from the sheer BL plot nonsense vibes emanating from this building
teamwork makes the dream work. and dreamwork. makes shrek
fantastic. i love it. i posted this after my wife said it yesterday and as i was doing it i was like "this can't be an original thought. as soon as i hit post someone's going to say 'you stole this from a tweet from 2014' and i'll say 'no, i stole it from my beautiful wife.'"
This is one of the new illustrations I made for the expanded edition of my art book Woodlands. The book will launch on Kickstarter in August!
hottest fucking thing one can read, really
I'm still thinking about this actually because yes the fact they built the entire interior of the Hail Mary is fucking awesome and also insane but do you know what else it means? Practical lighting. My Star Trek TOS heart is bursting
Amazon-MGM's entire 156-minute, big-budget sci-fi gamble was shot without any green (or blue) screen, Christopher Miller says.
"All that said, after his comments took off, Miller took to X to clarify that just because the production didnβt use greenscreen backgrounds doesnβt, of course, mean there are no digital effects. βSome clarification here: βNo green screenβ doesnβt mean βno VFX,'β he wrote. βThere were, in fact, thousands of VFX shots in the film (2018!). Green screen is sometimes used in lieu of building sets or figuring out locations/lighting in advance, which can be noticeable if not done carefully and is something we didnβt want to do.β
Continued Miller: βWe built the entire interior of the Hail Mary ship β but within the ship, there were still wire and puppeteer removals and ceiling replacements, etc. When Ryan is outside on the hull of the ship, we shot him in front of a black background for space and a shifting hue background when he was up against the aurora of a planet which allowed for truer interactive light on him than a green screen would. The wide space exteriors and spaceship shots were entirely digital and beautifully done by ILM. Rocky was a seamless blend of puppetry and animation from Framestore. And other great work from many more. It really does take a village and we had the best of the best on our side.β

this is from "research as a leisure activity" by celine nguyen, publs. on stubstack in 2024. it's a very good read
I met someone when I was pretty young who had received a generous inheritance -- not enough to live a life of luxury, but enough to live on comfortably without working. He had chosen to simply keep going to school his whole life. He did get degrees, but he didn't use them for anything other than pleasure -- he had a Ph.D but also two Master's degrees, three BAs, and was currently serving an apprenticeship in blacksmithing while considering trying out some trade schools next. I thought, if I had the money I'd do that too, and then thought about how I still could learn all the time, it would just have to be a hobby instead of the career he'd made of it. It definitely changed the way I saw both education and leisure.
