Tip for dance people who want to be more gender-inclusive:  replace the idea of “men’s” and “women’s” roles in the dance with “lead” and “follow”. Particularly in partnered dances, there IS often a distinct role difference (the lead, well, leads the dance, while the follow responds to the lead’s cues) – but there’s no reason that the lead HAS to be a man and the follow a woman, other than traditional gender roles. Which as we all should know by now, are bullshit.  It sometimes physically works more smoothly if the lead is taller than the follow, but that isn’t strictly necessary, particularly with skilled dancers.   There’s also absolutely no reason why the same individual can’t or shouldn’t learn both parts and then dance them according to preference or partner availability.
