I love when people try to gotcha me on my stance that all sports should be gender integrated with "even American football???" because I can instantly come back with "oh lmao, no, I don't think ANYONE should play American football at all, it's way too dangerous" like nice try but I know no amount of testosterone is going to protect you from the profound, life ruining health issues caused by getting repeated severe concussions over the course of several years. No one should play this sport.
If you find it difficult (or annoying) to post on AO3, considering changing from the default HTML to the more familiar Rich Text. You can find these buttons at the top right of the box where you enter the text of your fic.
If you dislike the Rich Text format, or if you're having issues when you copy/paste from somewhere else such as Google Docs, then I have a post over here with a tool (and instructions) that will convert your fic into html for you so you can just copy/paste it in without any worries or additional effort.
Also, AO3 recommends that you don't write your story directly in that AO3 form because your work isn't saved until you hit the button at the bottom of the page. To avoid the risk of losing your work, consider writing your story somewhere else and copying it over into AO3.
RIP to the legend
This goose fucking rocks and had a crazy life!
I really just have to summarize Thomas's entire life:
He was in a committed relationship with a male swan named Henry for 18-24 years before a female swan named Henrietta showed up and mated with Henry.
Thomas was initially jealous of the pair and attacked them, breaking 2 of the 5 eggs Henrietta had laid. However, once the remaining eggs hatched, Thomas warmed up to them and helped raise them.
Henry couldn't fly because of an injured wing, so Thomas taught the cygnets how to fly.
When they needed to reduce the goose population in the pond where Thomas and the swans lived, they dyed Thomas's feathers red so he wouldn't be separated from Henry.
Henry, Henrietta, and Thomas remained in their happy throuple for years and raised 68 cygnets before Henry died in 2009. After Henry's death, Henrietta found another swan and flew away, leaving Thomas alone.
Thomas finally met and mated with a female goose in 2011 and had his own babies. However, another goose named George stole them and raised them himself.
As Thomas grew elderly and blind, he was relocated to a wildlife center where he raised orphaned cygnets.
His caretaker at the center described him as "pretty high maintenance."
Thomas died in 2018 at the age of around 40. He had a funeral that included a small coffin and a procession that was led by a bagpiper. He was buried under the stone where Henry was buried, the two finally reunited in death.
Before and after his death, Thomas has been celebrated as an icon of the LGBTQ+ community for obvious reasons.

Wait hold on what was that
When you're posting a work on AO3, one of the options you have is to add relationship tags to your work. Sometimes you'll see tags that look almost exactly the same and you might wonder what the difference is.
A/B indicates that person A and person B have a romantic or sexual relationship in this fic.
A&B indicates that person A and person B have a non-romantic and non-sexual relationship in this fic - they are friends, colleagues, family members etc. who have a platonic relationship.
If you want to add more specific information about what kind of relationship the characters have in your story, you can use the additional tags or the summary to let readers know more about what they're in for.
Editing to add: Oh yes! And it doesn't matter which character you list first in your tag. They both filter the same way in the site's database.
I never even knew that difference back when I posted more on AO3 and that "/" always meant a sexualized/"writer wants to depict this as sexy/wants you to ship this". I'd use the / for that, but also for stuff like a canonical abuser/abused couple I listed as a warning I was mentioning The Thing, rather than letting it be the elephant under the floor so to speak. No wonder people jumped to some of the conclusions they did about me! Oof.
(I kind of wish there was an option/mark for warning "I am mentioning this, possibly in detail or repeatedly, it is canonical/important to the character/story, but I don't LIKE it," if that makes sense. I was about to suggest an asterisk but that would mess up searches.
Seriously though, such a thing would be awesome for those of us who like to write angst and dystopia etc... to be able to tag both how we're framing comships or darkships or canon events or stuff in the warnings etc. It would be awesome all around, if you ask me - it would actually keep people who want to find a total-unrealistic-r-fantasy kink fic away from a serious exploration of trauma and recovery, and vice versa, preventing a lot of conflict and discourse from the gate...)
I used the terms "sex" and "romance" as neutral, but apparently they aren't. I intended them to be representative of "non-platonic" and I separated sex and romance to demonstrate that I was talking both about physical and emotional situations.
When it comes to specifying the kind of sex or romance in the fic, that's where the additional tags come in. Where necessary, the Archive Warnings should also be used - for example Rape/Non-Con or Underage Sex.
the / and the & are very broad categories.
& is typically used with fics that are also categorized as Gen (General)
/ is typically used with the other categories (F/F, F/M, M/M, Multi, Other)
let this be the year that you stop using your school (or employer) email address for your AO3 account
when you leave school or leave a job, you lose that email address. This means not only that youâll lose any emails you have saved on that address but that you might lose your ability to access AO3. When you try to reset your password or recover your account, messages are sent to the email address on file.
your school or employer might block emails based on words contained in those emails. that means you might miss subscription notifications, comment notifications, or emails from the Policy & Abuse team trying to contact you. These messages wonât go to spam. Theyâll just be outright blocked. You will never see them.
your school/work systems administrator has the ability to access and read your emails (not that they necessarily would, but they have that power)
if youâre still in high school, itâs possible that the schoolâs Acceptable Use Policy (similar to a Terms of Service) would allow your parents or legal guardian to access your emails, upon request
school and work email addresses often use some form of your real, legal name which you may or may not want connected to your fannish identity.
As you can see, creating a free email account with a different provider is probably a good idea for a lot of reasons unrelated to AO3, too. It might seem annoying, but itâs worth it.Â
If you need instructions for how to change your accountâs email address, here you go!

So to me, there are spoons (general energy cost) and carnival tickets (specific energy cost).
Spoons can be used pretty much anywhere.
Carnival tickets are only good for the carnival, and itâs only in town for a limited amount of time.
So like, if I get âkitchen cleaningâ carnival tickets, I canât use that to clean my bedroom, thatâs not where the carnival is.

Amazing app
why write a story if no one's going to read it?
Sometimes you don't want to share a story with others. Sometimes you do want to share it, but no one clicks on the title. So why bother writing it down if the only person you can guarantee will read it is you?
You need to get it out of your head. It just keeps replaying in your imagination on a loop and the only way to get it unstuck is to pin it down on paper.
You need to figure out what the story is. You have a lot of disjointed scenes or lines that you know are connected but you can't quite figure out how.
There's something in the story that's important to you, and you don't want to lose that thing by forgetting it. Future you might find that thing important too.
You want to be able to go back to the story again and again. Maybe to make adjustments over time. Maybe just to revisit a story that gives you the emotional release you need in that moment.
You want to be able to use text-to-speech to read the story aloud to you. Maybe it's a bedtime story. Maybe it's keeping you company while you do errands and chores.
You want to find out whether you can write a story (because not everyone can).
You want to be able to have almost the same story, but a little bit different, and you want to have it 15 times with slight variations. Then you can go through your own personal menu picking exactly the combination of beats that will satisfy you most on this reading.
You enjoy the process of finding just the right words or phrases or scenes to paint the pictures you want to shape the scene.
You want to find the exact rhythm and syllables and structure to make a sentence really sing.
You don't really have any particular reason, but you know you want to write that story down.
Weâre all familiar with +1-5 weapons. Introduce x1-5 weapons that multiply your attack and damage rolls, and cursed ones that divide your attack and damage rolls.Â
Really, every weapon is already a x1 weapon.
