Suki Alone previews!
Biyu: "I learned the hard way to never underestimate the wrath of a Fire Nation mother"
Kyoshi: “That’s rough buddy.”
I’m so excited for this comic!
This is probably all that we'll see of Azula, but I'm pretty satisfied with this characterization. We also finally have context for Azula taunting Sokka about Suki in DoBS. Azula never actually tortured Suki and made most of that up.
Still, not this raises the question of if Azula really would have gone out of her way to torment both Sokka and Suki. From seeing how unbroken Suki is here though, it seems kind of like Azula's supposed tormenting is at worst psychological bullying.

Yeah, tdp is very good, but I honestly have a very hard time watching a lot of the Claudia bits because I feel like there are so many similarities between her and Azula, and it makes me so incredibly worried about how her story is going to go
I understand your concern, but there is good reason to be optimistic about how Claudia will be handled. The creator of TDP is Aaron Ehasz, who had worked on ATLA as a writer (I think one of the head writers). He has come out as saying that he’d wanted there to be a fourth season for ATLA, which would have contained a redemption style arc for Azula.
With him kind of running the show (I think, I honestly do not know how much creative control he holds as the show’s creator, and how much input he has with the writing and directing teams), I have reasonably high hopes for how Claudia will be handled. We already see a lot more obvious humanity in her than Azula had been shown in ATLA. After all, we’ve seen that Claudia:
Worked hard with her dad to try to save King Harrow’s life; she came up with the swapping of souls
Cares about Callum, and holds a code of conduct for herself. She knew that Harrow was killed and that Callum did not know, and even though it was a terribly hard thing for her to do, she told him of what happened to Harrow. This is a big task for a sixteen year old to have to do, to tell one of their closest friends that their only parent had died. And she did it.
Also, she had been carrying the letter Harrow had written for Callum, and never once peeked at its contents. This isn’t necessarily a huge thing, but it is a sign of good character. The letter was not for her, so she did not read it. ]
While in the Moon Nexus, she was able to hold a truce with Rayla. She heard what Callum had to say, that Rayla was his friend and good, and listened to him. She didn’t close up her ears and continue fighting. She listened to her friend.
And speaking of listening to a friend, there’s the heart to heart we see her have with Ezran, about how her mother left, and how that affected her. She feels abandoned, and when being prompted to make a decision on who to have in her life, she couldn’t. She didn’t want to, she wants all her family with her always.
When it comes to dark magic, we don’t see that she is power hungry at all, or that the desire to use it comes from a bad place. It almost comes across as that she’s just in love with the idea of doing magic, and wants to learn all that she can do.
She saved Soren from a life of paralysis. Yes, the way she did it is questionable, but what we see here is that Claudia loves her brother deeply, and would do anything to help him. And she did this while disobeying her father’s orders, that she puts the safety and health of her loved ones before anything. And considering what it did to her hair, this includes her own wellness.
And obviously, raising Viren from the dead. Again, Claudia’s method was almost certainly not a good one, but it further pushes the point home: Claudia will do anything to keep her loved ones safe.
The show does an excellent job of leading Claudia down a dark path that feels natural for her, without compromising her character. In fact, all the things that make her human and relatable are what are steering her that way; her love for her family, her willingness to do anything for them, her curiosity and desire to learn, her loyalty. She’s not being stripped of her humanity as she aligns herself more and more with Viren (and inevitably Aaravos).
The problem with Azula and her arc was that we were not shown many moments that made her super relatable. The only times we were given an opportunity to see Azula as anything beyond a child soldier and a thorn in Zuko’s side was during The Beach, and during her mental breakdown. And it kind of is a shame that both times we see Azula as a more human character is at her expense (the butt of the jokes in The Beach, and having a literal mental breakdown). She wasn’t allowed to be relatable. She was only supposed to represent the evil of the Fire Nation.
And this is why I think the handling of Claudia’s arc is going to be much more carefully and respectfully done. I do think she’s going to go down a very dark path. I think she’s going to be rivalling Aaravos as the Big Bad. But I think the very things that have led her down this route are going to be what save her in the end.
