Exploring gender and sexuality in fictional characters is a blast. I love making it contradictory, complicated, and eventually what it should be — a non-issue. With Grace and Simon I find myself not changing much about their designs. The same goes for most characters genders I play with. To me, gender isn't your look, it's your weird innards. Some like to match the in to the out, and for others it don't matter so much. To me it don't brah, I'm beyond caring how ppl percieve me. Male, female, you're all right. I'm just kinda human.
These apply to my #BOARDS_OF_IMMOLATION Bloodymary crossover fics. Lots of this is just interpretation and my own experiences :-)
Grace
Ryland is trans femme, kinda bigender,, and only just having the space (literally) to figure that out. I'm referring to Grace with she/her for this. In the fic, his prns are he/she, starting with he, and changing over time. Dw I'll write it to make sense TRUST.
Growing up on modern earth she was way too repressed and nervous to ever explore her gender. Always focused on her career, getting ahead. She was happy where she was before the Hail Mary, but there always felt like a piece missing 8(
A lot easier to explore this now in the presence of someone who comes from a planet where gender is "WE ALL LAY EGGS WHO GAF!!!"
Rocky is definitely very confused when Grace starts asking about gender and sex, because it's prolly not even discussed on Erid as a unisexual species. Nonetheless, it leaves an open, accepting mind to discuss these things with. Grace is always valuing logic over feeling, even if she has a LOOOTTT of feelings.
I wonder if before the Hail Mary he wasn't much of a crier. I haven't finished the book fully, but from what I remember we only see her cry in Space.
The amnesia stripped her down to a clean slate and thus forced her to be outward with her emotions. Guh. Okay cool. Now she can't hold back her tears no matter how hard she tries, and she accepts that.

Entirely self indulgent perception of him btw. Simon as a trans masc butch. Aka mecore.
Its not the most realistic for him to be actively on testosterone for the events of my fic #INFERNO_BOI. In general, the Iron Lung universe neglects everyone's needs. So the idea that Simon would have access to hormone therapy is a stretch. But... . I still wanna make it work for him.
I hc he transitioned socially from a younger age but had to stealth while with Eden. Especially the Quiet Rapture happened. While gender prolly doesn't matter in the same way it does now, I think Eden would think transitioning to be a waste of time, a soiling of the natural body. Transphobic Eden. RIP 😭😭
Idk how but he managed to smuggle T somehow, beginning his medical transition by the time he was 16-17, shortly before Filament. Always put himself off as a late bloomer, and became very insecure about his masculinity, did his best to subscribe to being a MAN MAN MAN.
When taken in by the COI, maybe out of everything, they had decency to give him those resources, so he was able to access them through there. Production of pharmaceuticals might be different from other resources like food, shit that would be much harder to create in a lab. Idk. Chances are, shortages of T were frequent, so Simon was on and off it for the long time up until he was sent on the SM-13. He probably got some health issues as a result of not consistently taking it, and it even could contribute to some of his mental instability because his hormones are wacky. Coming from experience. TAKE YOUR HRT REGULARLY BUDS.
Giving him the butch label is important to me. Because I don't think he sees himself as just male. It's more complex than that. I myself kinda shoved myself into a box for a long time, feeling like having a more complicated identity would be too much for me, for everyone. He probably woulda felt the same.
When Simon is away finally and able to take care of himself, I want him to reconnect to his womanhood. Still on T, but more comfortable with his body, (he never got top surgery or rlly wanted it tbh) mind, femme pronouns and terminology. Might actually really enjoy it. It's not him detransitioning to be clear. Again this is from my OWN experience as a trans masc butch. It felt MORE freeing and equally trans to connect as a woman along with being masc, if that makes sense...
I don't think either Grace or Simon would necessarily subscribe to these labels out loud. I think they'd accept themselves as queer and that's that. They love each other, love that they see each other as who they really are, rather than the pre-conceived notions of others in their past. Fuck even the planet they are on will simply recognize them as human. That's all. (Okay Miranda Priestly)
Grace and Ryland's genders are something important I wanna explore in Boards of Immolation. There's only so much room to discuss it within the first part, Inferno, but I'm looking forward to later when I can dig in them. (Okay....)
Gardener Simon is cool, I like it. I think that it would be very triggering to him though. Bro has bigtime PTSD that much is clear.
He was a part of a cult where everyone who died needed to be planted under the soil to feed a tree. From at least the ages of 12 or so (If he was 33 by the movies events), he was indoctrinated to think that trees were blood drinking man eaters.
I think that trees, plants in general; would be a VERY sore spot for him for a long time.
Not even out of pure fear, of course he was taught to be scared of it all, but the goal IS to die and be buried.
The greatest fear within the brotherhood is that your body is soiled, impure, not suited to be food for the last tree.
I wonder how conflicted Simon must feel. It's clear he always had hope, a different mindset compared to other Edenites, even though the beliefs were ingrained in him well enough.
With that being said I have an alternative to the gardening Simon hobby. Can even be a precursor to it, that could help him feel more comfortable with flora. I'm sure I'm not the first to think of this but anyways ahemahem.

Let Simon get into carpentry, specifically woodwork.
Hands-on work that requires his focus. Practical, useful tasks he can commit to but on his own time and accord.
For the sake of scenario, say he was in Grace's biosphere on Erid, and the Eridians planted some trees if they got the stuff needed for it.
I mean yes, I wanna see big beefy Simon sweating and straight up lumberjacking it. But there's another layer underneath his chiselled biceps ( -ᴗ- )୨
It would be a big hurdle to get over for Simon to chop down a tree. To him, it'd be like cutting down his own god. I think it's already implied he was blamed for the death of the last tree too so. PHEWWWW that'd be rough. Symbolically facing your god and putting an axe through it. Cutting down your previous beliefs to shape your own, new ones.
Imagining him actually doing it though.. Cutting one down, sanding the wood, making something new, even replanting the previous tree. It could be therapeutic for him to find control and peace in something that ruled over him for SO long.
Plus his craft becoming a gesture of affection. Simon seems the kind of guy to show love through actions
He could learn to build Lotsa shit think of the possibilities... Some thingymajig for Grace to use in an experiment, furniture for their lil house, or appliances. Could even get artsy with it. Ouugh. Wood carving sculptures.... Flips table. He could make a table too that'd be cool. So I can flip it.

Do you think Eridians have some sort of 'rock skipping' sport, where the ones with flatter carapace shoot themselves across a lake and and the ones that go the farthest/have the best form win? Kind of like human diving competitions, but horizontal??
Inspired by @ctrl-shift-alt-9 's headcanon about Simon mining asteroids as a convict I decided to headcanon a design for a four convict mining unit. I'm not the most comfortable in photobash but it really felt like the perfect medium for this one.
Portable mining units
As I envision it this MS's would be a small part of C.O.I's mining operation. Leaving prisoners inside mostly on their own for better or for worse, with not much guard oversight in terms of rationing or behaviour, the shittiness of the circumstance would depend mostly on who you are stuck with. And considering the relative autonomy, being considered for MS work would be the kind of thing you get for good behaviour.
Otherwise you just get to work in the bigger supervised mine or the refineries (which I might also concept out later).
(Also I would consider it funny that the C.O.I owns both an SM and an MS 13 and both had the same unlucky convict inside at some point.)
More headcanons
- The mining stations are all equipped with a radio that is supposed to only serve as communication with nearby tow ships, but there is a way to jail break/jerry rig them into taking external signals. The convicts that can do that are valuable in prison society. The jail broken communicators are mostly used to listine in on passing vessels, or sometimes even far away eden scavenger transmissions or something like it. If a mining operation is all made out of previous eden brothers, that is most likely what they do in their free time.
- a sub headcanon to this is an actual pirate radio station in the iron lung universe, but I think I'll make a separate post for that.
-All the mining suits are numbered, and since Korean culture might have survived in space I think number 4 is still considered unlucky. Simon always gets the number 4 suit
-The crews are usually chosen at random but you can cash in favours to be with the same people twice in a row, I wouldn't say it's common, but there are reoccurring crews that are somehow bonded on these missions (I don't think a cosmic misery universe is complete without a little bit of hope)
Namaygoosisagagun First Nation/Collins has burned to the ground. The entire community is nothing but ashes after being quickly consumed by wildfires. They did not have any support from emergency services, and no one offered aid. The community saved themselves by escaping into boats because no one came.
Mishkeegogamang and Cat Lake have lost power. Families are ending up in shelters with nothing. Armstrong, Lac La Croix, Whitesand, Gull Bay, Lac des Mille Lacs are currently in the fires path and all members are being evacuated.
All this loss, all this devastation, and it was entirely preventable.
After steadily underfunding wildland firefighting and purposefully excluding Indigenous wildland firefighters and Indigenous wildfire organizations from wildfire operations, firefighter training, decisionmaking, and resource exchanges, in 2025, Doug Ford slashed the forest firefighting budget.
It's hard to ignore his decision to cut funding and leave us out of adequate fire training (even though we've lived with forest fires for thousands of years—far longer than settlers have been in Canada—and made sure fires like the ones we're all seeing today were prevented through kinisitotēn) when, despite making up less than 5% of the population, we account for 42% percent of all wildfire evacuations in Canada.
And when we are successfully evacuated, we face discrimination and racism—like Kashechewan—because it's always been easier to blame us than it is to blame the true culprit: denialism, corportate greed, and colonization.
The people of Collins and every other impacted community deserve better.
