Gonna (hopefully) introduce my sis to the train show this week. I'm so excited to do a rewatch!

My dad, a professional artist, said that it’s morally wrong to pirate Infinity Train bc HBO Max has the rights to it and Owen Dennis should have been more careful about who he sold his show to. I don’t want to believe he’s right, but this really isn’t the stance I expected him to take so I’m wondering if there’s any truth to it?? Please help me I’ve been tryna figure out how a corporation can just destroy a work of art like this and then how another artist can just go “welp he had it coming”

Honestly? I feel the same as you do about the cancellation. I hate what happened to this show, and I can't fathom why they would make such an awful choice given the critical acclaim IT has gotten. I've been following this show for a long time, and I was so excited for every episode. When I could watch episodes on TV officially, I did, because it was important to me that the train crew got numbers. As someone who's not financially independent, that's all I could do to support the show.

But again, it's not a fandom's job to advertise or promote a show, and you shouldn't feel responsible for a show failing or succeeding.

I'm not a moral or legal authority, and I'm sure your father's got his own stance based on his experiences, but with the situation of having such a wonderful, meaningful show being unavailable everywhere, I would say it's not wrong to enjoy it, however you can.

book 4: red and blue couple gets couple therapy from a bell who's a wanted criminal

I love how infinity train uses glasses, and that Ryan is the one who wears glasses in book four.

Like there's the basic stereotype of smart character who wears glasses, and studious people having glasses almost as an accessory. At least when used in character design.

There must be a reason the character has glasses. Whether for plot, a motive, or to help us grasp who they are based on stereotypes.

And Tulip! Fits those stereotypes! Her frames or thin and large- and neither of her parents need glasses, so I think it's safe to say it's used mostly for the stereotype and also to give her parents something to fight over.

(I don't find anything wrong with leaning into this stereotype here because it does work- and it's not necessarily negative. But it's possible that's just because I felt very seen when I watched Tulip's parents argue about glasses during the flashback scene.)

And in book four- Min suits the stereotypes of glasses-characters. He's studious, down to earth, smart- giving him glasses would have made sense to express those key associations. But they didn't! They took the time to turn the trope on it's head, to give the silly-goofy character glasses!

And Ryan's glasses do still say something about him! They're bulky and brightly colored! It's something for him to fidget with, and his glasses never once feel out of place on his character!

I dunno where I was going with it but, I just really appreciate the thought they put into these character designs, and knowing when and where to use character design tropes and when to break them.

I literally love comparing Lake and Tulip's designs. I think it says so much about them.

Haven't seen it mentioned anywhere, and maybe that's because it's just common knowledge, but! Both Lake and Tulip have boots, and both of them have pants that don't quite reach their ankles.

And this is! Beautiful! So cool! Because Lake isn't an exact copy of Tulip, their design isn't a cheap rip-off all the way through. But these similarities also accentuate how different they really are.

They both wear boots but Tulips are obviously softer. Insulated. The kind of thing you slip on and wear around. Lake's are closer to work boots. They have laces and are more about durability then practically (slip ons).

And Tulip's pants are some sort of leggings or tights- something that sticks close to the skin. They're also layered! Lake's pants lack layers and also stick out. There's a gap and you can tell that their wants might not be baggy, but none of their clothes is something I would call form-fitting.

Even when she gets a new design, she's wearing jeans, and you can see where the bend if her knee is. Which isn't clear on Lake unless they're moving.

All of Tulip's reiterations are also splash of color and some neutral tones. Which like! If Lake was trying so desperately to be the opposite of Tulip, there's no way they'd wear black and gray. Tulip literally wore black and gray for the entire first season!

But Lake owns the neutral tones. Instead of letting their skin be some sort of neutral accent, they made wearing neutral colors a trait of their's. It's just who they are.

Also Tulip always seems to wear long sleeves, possibly because she's Minnesotan and it's cold here 70% of the year, or maybe she just thinks they're comfy. Lake has no sleeves whatsoever. It makes me wonder if they hate wearing too many layers or things that are too tight. If that makes them feel a little trapped or restricted.

I have no idea where I was going with this or if any of this really makes sense. I just love these two kids. I love parallels. I love learning about characters through their designs.

Thinking about Book 1, I've always loved that Tulip isn't the generic "first protagonist" that she so easily could've become. She's a total nerd. She's a genius coder. She's an introvert. She's angry almost all the time. She has family troubles. She's reckless and stubborn and sometimes irrational. She's so empathetic that she's willing to forgive someone who tried to hurt her (TWICE if you count Lake), a quality not common in this world. Her best friend is a weird ball guy.

And this uniqueness that Tulip has also helps Lake's characterization in Book 2. It would've been so easy to make Tulip the generic mildly heroic protagonist and then make Lake the edgy one who's not afraid of breaking the rules.

BUT THEY'RE BOTH EDGY. THEY BOTH BREAK THE RULES.

Which means you notice more subtle things about Lake's characterization. Differences from Tulip that might've otherwise been missed. They love nature. They don't forgive and forget people who try to hurt them. They're a huge numbskull. They've got BIG emotions and cry easily. They want to roam and live and EXPERIENCE. Their first idea when running into a problem is to run or punch it. They're an extrovert. They think that weird ball guy kinda sucks, actually.

I really like the way Infinity Train Book 4 was setup, the way that the train kept putting them back at 202, because them communicating and getting along didnt do anything, it wanted them to say what they wanted in life.

Ryan's door opened the first time when he told Min he was right here and he wouldn't leave him. Coming back to the idea that following his dream of touring was worthless if Min wasn't here. That going and doing music without him was a mistake and that all he really want was to be by his side.

Min's door opened when he finally admitted that he did want to do music after all, but more importantly he wants to play if it's with Ryan, without him, music is just a hobby, with him, it's his dream.

They could only leave the train when they realized that it didn't matter what they did, where they went, but what they both wanted in life was to be together, but also Min admitted to himself that he loved music and he needed to not let others dictate what he did in life.

They're unironically soulmates and their issues and arguments don't matter at all, all that matters is that they're by each others side.
