Represent! #4 - “Believe You” (2021)
written by Nadira Jamerson art by Brittney Williams & Andrew Dalhouse
This is so important. There are literal studies proving white doctors don’t think black patients (especially black woman) feel pain the same way white people do. Please advocate for yourself and stay safe.
Mid to late twenties is a weird age where you can still pass as a teenager but you can feel your body is falling apart with each passing day.
HA I’ve been feeling like that since I was 15!
I hate that our bodies when faced with less than a full nights rest will manifest 800 flu symptoms to make us go back to bed
currently dying of dysentery because I got less than 10 hours

in case no one’s told you yet, you feel exhausted and hungover and sometimes even sick after panic attacks/meltdowns/flashbacks/dissociative episodes/etc. because of very real chemical processes that are involved in your nervous system activation and de-activation during those times. it’s chemical dump effects, and no, you SHOULDN’T be able to just brush it off and feel and act normal. you’ve got a bunch of physical things that got activated and that all has to wind down. It’s not in your head, it’s very physical, and you need to work WITH your body during the after-periods instead of trying to curb stomp it. be gentle to yourself, okay?
I am chronically ill and severely disabled. I have plenty of issues, but one is my constant dropping of my cellphone. It is kept in a very intense case (though I did get one with gold glitter in it) but I still drop it four or five times a day at least.
That’s why last week I bought a lanyard to attach my cellphone to so it stays around my neck. I hated making this concession because it was such a visible sign of my disability. But I need one and eventually I gave in. Being me, I got one bedazzled. Rainbow of course. As once stated by a friend ‘I can’t do anything straight’. And I haven’t dropped my phone all day. That feels good.
So I hope that whatever it is you need to make your life easier, you can also find a way to get it or get yourself around the idea of it.
here's a little disabled life tidbit for ya:
if you're like me and you're constantly dealing with imposter syndrome; trying to convince yourself that you're not really sick because your condition isn't bad enough, or you're not suffering enough, or you're just not sick enough, i have a new thing that i tell myself now. your symptoms, your pain level, all of those things, in an abled person, are supposed to be 0. you're not faking it, i promise you.
From one physically disabled person to all the others reading this
You deserve to be here just as much as ableds. You deserve the space you make up
Your worth doesn't come from what you are or are not capable of doing
You deserve the accommodations you need
You deserve accessibility
You deserve respect
You deserve your aids
You deserve to get married without losing your benefits
We are human beings who deserve the same rights as ableds
The Spoonie Motto
During this quarantine there is a lot of messaging out their saying now is the time to get that perfect skin you have always dreamed of. That now you have the time to try all those skin care products you haven’t before. Don’t let companies and social pressure force you to do anything with your with your skin. Don’t let them blame you for your genetics or act like you just haven’t had enough time to figure out your skin. You are beautiful and your skin is beautiful no matter what you decide to do with it.
