Just in case other non-indigenous people like me feel ashamed and angry and don’t know what to do, a small thing I decided to do this year is to pledge to donate monthly to the Indian Residential School Survivors Society. We know about the genocide, we need to do something, even if it will never be enough to the victims and their families.

We are a provincial organization with a 20-year history of providing services to indian residential school survivors.

The Senate voted unanimously to make Juneteenth a national holiday.

That means EVERY republican senator voted to make Juneteenth a national holiday. NONE of them objected. That includes the most racist of them. So that shows you what an empty gesture it is, because the likes of Mitch McConnell and Ted Cruz were like "*shrug* why not?"

They're trying to wipe Critical Race Theory and the 1619 Project clean from the curriculum and go back to pretending slavery never happened or wasn't "that bad" and of course go back to pretending racism is over and denying systemic racism exists. That is the current news wave. That is trending, pressing, news.

And in the midst of that they go "sure, let's make the day that literally marks the end of slavery a day of recognition" because it doesn't mean shit.

Now, Juneteenth should be a national holiday and this would be great news if it came with approval of Critical Race Theory and MAYBE if they also passed the goddamn Voting Rights Act and stopped implementing Jim Crow era-type suppressive voting laws in a different state every month.

There's no action behind it. It's empty. It's useless.

I keep seeing the phrase "when the news finally reached Texas" in reference to Juneteenth. Let's be super clear. White people in Texas knew slavery was over. They just chose not to tell the Black people. Juneteenth was when the Black people finally found out. History is so whitewashed that we accept the euphemisms as gospel. It didn't take 2 1/2 years for the messenger to bring the news. The rest of the Union didn't forget to tell Texas. White Texans just got away with keeping their slavery way of life for 2 extra years and nobody said shit. Hell yes, #Juneteenth should be a federal fucking holiday, but ALSO we should be teaching #CriticalRaceTheory in our schools so we don't get watered down versions of history.

Open your money holder to Black-owned businesses ONLY.

Use your voice and make the Voting Rights and George Floyd Bills laws of the land.

DO NOT commercialize Juneteenth.

Speak out against Racism and Systematic Racism no matter how small.

Remember All Lives CAN NOT Matter until BLACK LIVES MATTER.
