Attuning to a deck
Connecting your energy to a deck is called âattuningâ. This is an important process when you first receive your deck, as it allows the cards to become connected to you emotionally and spiritually. The more connected you are to your cards, the more accurate and insightful your readings will be.Â
Attuning to a deck can be a simple process of just keeping them with you, sleeping near them, and touching and using them regularly. Or, you can make a ritual out of it if you connect to objects through rituals better. However you choose to attune to your deck is fine, as long as it learns your energy imprint, and they feel special to you in some way. Take at least 7 days to attune your deck to your energy, to make sure itâs thoroughly attuned.
Cleansing the deck
Tarot cards pick up energies very quickly, and often also pick up negative energy as well. Negative energy can make you feel mentally clouded or may prevent you from reading or interpreting anything from the cards. Therefore it is important to regularly cleanse the cards. You can burn sage or incense and wave the deck through the smoke to do this, or you can anoint them with holy oils or waters to cleanse them of negative energy.
Protecting the deck
To protect the deck from taking on negative energy when they are not being used, place a clear quartz, amethyst or rose quartz on top of the card deck to clear negativity and amplify the energies of light. You will still need to cleanse every few readings, as touching them will transfer negative energies, especially if you allow other people to touch them as well.
Shuffling and seeking answers
When you begin a reading, shuffle the deck and allow yourself to relax into your question. Feel all the emotions, ideas, desires and thoughts that go with that question, and allow them to transfer to the cards. From experience, it is best to shuffle the cards 11 times between different questions, that way the deck is thoroughly shuffled and you give yourself time to settle into the question. Cut the deck into three and choose the pile that you are most drawn to.
Reading intuitively:
During a reading, certain parts of the pictures, symbols or colors may pop out to you and ask you to interpret them in a particular way. At all times you will want to be reading intuitively in order to be reading effectively. Do not rely solely on the set meanings of cards, always listen to your gut and what it tells you. Regularly check in and see what it is saying to you about your cards. Some parts of the pictures can hold certain meanings. Some interpretations of the symbols and signs on the cards are below, but make sure to always listen to the gut. If the gut is telling you something different to the general interpretations, go with the gut.
