In my twenties, I was learning who I was. In my thirties, I'm learning how to manipulate myself. Because knowing what to do isn't the problem. The problem is outsmarting the part of you that would rather polish a single perfect sentence than fix a broken plot—that would rather rearrange furniture than face the sagging structure. So I don't let myself touch the words. I turn the manuscript into a PDF, read it like a stranger, and take notes on paper. No deleting. No rewriting. Just me and the bones of the story. When I go back to the editable file, I go with purpose. The battle isn't against the draft. It's against the urge to fix what's easy before fixing what's real.
