GoogleSpeak proposal... rejected
Those fools at Interaction14 didn't choose my proposal. meh!
===== 500 foolish words =====
GoogleSpeak is a satirical performance/critique on the language of computer-directed discourse.
The title is a pun that references the term "Newspeak" from the novel "1984", a grim portrayal of a futuristic Socialist state, published in 1949 from the pen of pseudonym George Orwell.
Within the novel, Newspeak is an implement of the socialist party whose purpose is to “decisively reduce the lexicon of human expression as a means to diminish the range of human thought.”
“GoogleSpeak” is a term I coined in 2008 within a blog post describing the keyword loaded, syntactically twisted language that we employ when talking to our favorite Search engine.
QUESTION: How far apart is the objective of Newspeak from the reality of our constantly using GoogleSpeak, or SiriSpeak, or any of our methods of computer-directed discourse?
To EXPLORE this theme, and others such as DoubleThink and the ThoughtPolice, I will illustrate each in a "Scene and Variation" format, juxtaposing the world of fantastic fiction with quirky real-world examples.
We’ll dissect keyword-loading as the audience tries to formulate the correct query in a Search for certain “bed pillows”, coupling it with an excerpt from Potions class at Hogwarts.
We’ll investigate keywords and syntax to establish context and intent search by asking Siri “How do you make Sangria?”
We’ll take all of 2 minutes to refresh our understanding of the semiotics of language courtesy of the frameworks of Eco and Chomsky as applied to a sample of Newspeak.
Heck, give these a try yourself.
You can expect 11.6 minutes of audience laughter, participation, grins, and a few groans.
In Newspeak this might read: interaction14 10min googlespeak talkact fullwise doubleplusgood

did they get it? did any of them see the fun from last year?
no point in having deep insights + fun... that'd be too much... fun ;)
iOS7... Music App > Genres > Classical > ??? where did ALL <Genre> Artists and ALL <Genre> Albums go and ALL <Genre> Songs go?!!! so now I have to talk to Siri on the train to play shuffled music for a Genre? rather poor work, Apple... I'd think those buttons were easy keepers as they were off the main screen *sigh*
call me crazy, but I'd have been on that tech support line at Attempt #2814 or so
because RED always means "On Time" also, some find it best just to NOT mention the train you just cancelled #sheesh #mta
Whoa there Pandora... that's the wrong Bill Evans! Of course you might have been able to figure from the rest of my stations that Jazz was my thing, whereas Banjo... not so much.
I assume that the little circle next to Verizon signifies how sucky their internet service is. At the tippy top there's LTE (light internet?)... followed by 3G (internet for 3rd graders?)... followed by this empty circle (null set internet?). Bah!
hmmm... I guess they're looking for my height, weight, and age... right?
Folks, here are the two PDFs of the Untold Story poster and map studies. Great fun to talk about it with tons of great IA/UX people tonight. https://www.dropbox.com/s/89a4d5ach8t5wfm/untold_story_poster_iasummit_infochemist_2013_0402.pdf https://www.dropbox.com/s/k4html20lvlrj2j/untold_story_mapanalyses_iasummit_infochemist_2013_0404.pdf I sure hope these Dropbox links work. 526!! THIS is the thanks I get for updating the crappy Podcasts app?
check out this volume control... really, watch the video and experience neverending confusion
let's see... Right side: push, Left side: pull... pretty clear... not as awesome as double-swinging restaurant kitchen doors, but certainly better than the doors at AOL on Astor, right Milissa/Jeff/Joe/Matt?
I've lost my past in Facebook. Seriously, there's no way to search past posts... but "Glory Be!" I can scroll through some of my past just by remembering what year I wrote it... unless it's just not there. WHAT?!
really?... really?
See the slides... or better yet... wait for the video... but if you have to have the slides, then here they are... but you won't know what I talked about just by reading the slides... if you know what I mean.
