rich people be losing theoretical money and making it our problem. like imagine anyone not wealthy being like "this is how much money I thought I would be making and since I'm not, I'm taking it from someone who needs it way more than me" and then we call it inflation or rising costs of living
It’s important that people understand that capitalists will talk about investments and debt while deliberately conflating money that exists and money that does not.
If Bob borrows a dollar from me, I jokingly charge him 100% daily interest, and he forgets about it for a month – am I a billionaire? If he buys me a drink and we call it even, haven’t I just forgiven a billion dollars in debt? How much money has actually been exchanged here?

What the fuck
This is absolutely fascinating. I've now been looking at Alex Colville's paintings and trying to work out what it is about them that makes them look like CGI and how/why he did that in a world where CGI didn't exist yet. Here's what I've got so far:
- Total lack of atmospheric perspective (things don't fade into the distance)
- Very realistic shading but no or only very faint shadows cast by ambient light.
- Limited interaction between objects and environment (shadows, ripples etc)
- Flat textures and consistent lighting used for backgrounds that would usually show a lot of variation in lighting, colour and texture
- Bodies apparently modelled piece by piece rather than drawn from life, and in a very stiff way so that the bodies show the pose but don't communicate the body language that would usually go with it. They look like dolls.
- Odd composition that cuts off parts that would usually be considered important (like the person's head in the snowy driving scene)
- Very precise drawing of structures and perspective combined with all the simplistic elements I've already listed. In other words, details in the "wrong" places.
What's fascinating about this is that in early or bad CGI, these things come from the fact that the machine is modelling very precisely the shapes and perspectives and colours, but missing out on some parts that are difficult to render (shadows, atmospheric perspective) and being completely unable to pose bodies in such a way as to convey emotion or body language.
But Colville wasn't a computer, so he did these same things *on purpose*. For some reason he was *aiming* for that precise-but-all-wrong look. I mean, mission accomplished! The question in my mind is, did he do this because he was trying to make the pictures unsettling and alienating, or because in some way, this was how he actually saw the world?
Worlds of Ursula K. Le Guin (2018), dir. Arwen Curry
The next line of her speech is also great: “Any human power can be resisted and changed by human beings.”
"But helping poor people should be voluntary."
And even when it is, people still have a problem with it.
I went back and did some digging, because it occured to me that I didn't know the date reference of this story and, sadly, there are way too many stories about school lunch debt that they're easy to mix up.
This particular story was from July 2019 (I reblogged it Sept 2022).
There was a relevant update within a week of the scandal: public outrage was swift, the embarrassed school board redacted the outrageous allusions to indebted students ending up in foster care, and it accepted the CEO's $20k donation.
It doesnt change the fact that the very concept of "school lunch debt" is disturbing and inhumane (and there are still stories about children...with lunch debt...). And clearly, the district changed it's tone because it didn't like the bad PR. But figured it was helpful to have more info and context.
Here are some of the relevant sources; each offer bits of info unique to each specific source:
1) "Pennsylvania school district turns down local businessman’s offer to pay off student lunch debts"
2) "Pennsylvania district sorry it warned that lunch debt could lead to foster care, accepts $22K donation"
3) "Pa. School District Reverses Course And Will Now Accept Donations To Cover Lunch Debt"
4) "Pennsylvania school lunch debt furor ends with an apology and an announcement: free lunch for all"
Remember: Public outrage can and does solve problems.
The rich are villains!

Btw I was talking to Kiddo about social rules because we're both autistic and it doesn't come naturally to either of us but I have 25 years experience on them so I have some useful tips
And as proof of that: in that conversation I realised what neurotypicals mean when they say we "make everything about us"
When they're talking and we interject "fun facts" or start talking about something related to what they're saying we mean:
"I am showing interest in you and your interests by engaging with them and showing I'm listening by adding information"
From their perspective we are stomping over their turn to talk and making it our turn and therefore making it about us
Conversation example:
NT: my favourite animal is sharks
Autistic person: with some sharks species the shark pup that hatches first hunts the others and eats them while being incubated inside the mother
Autistic person perspective: I have shown interest in you by giving you information about a topic you have shown interest in
NT person's perspective: wow they made my favourite animal a time for them to show off instead of letting me talk when it was my turn
It's doesn't matter if it's "on topic" or "relevant to the person" if it's when it's their turn to be the focus of the conversation
Like I know there is a bit more to it but this is the first time in 39 years I have understood the accusation "you're making this all about yourself"
OHHH. Ok? I think I get it?
NT important variables: When (whose turn is it), and How (intonation, etc) - Conversational metadata.
ND important variables: What (the literal text/information exchange), and Why (the purpose fulfilled) - The base conversation.
From one autistic to another: you can master this exchange with one easy tool.
Ask a follow-up question.
As stated, allistic conversations do put a lot of weight into whose turn it is to speak. So in the above example,
Person: my favorite animal is sharks
The best follow-up response is "what do you like about sharks?"
Your conversation partner will answer, and if they're not a dickbag, then they will turn the conversation back to you, likely with a relevant question - "what's your favorite animal?" At which point you are free to infodump just a little. Keep it within one or two sentences - unless of course the person finds the info interesting.
But then keep asking follow-up questions, or at least give your conversation partner a chance to follow-up on their statements. Don't worry too much about the timing of questions, and if you're even slightly anxious that you're asking something too personal/rude, then tack on a "sorry, you don't have to answer." Allistic people just like to know that you're listening to what they have to say about the topic.
This is good advice and largely what I told my kid to do
I'm still thrown though that even though I had picked up on the "you need to ask questions and limit your sharing" (even though I'm not great at it) but I was 39 before I realised why allistics went about things the way they did
Police supporters regularly admit that the police are the bad guys. They just don't care.
They expect police to be violent, but they have hopes that when the time comes, they'll have somebody to exact violence *for them.*
I feel like they should just print this out and hand it to any reporter dumb enough to ask about recovering bodies
^ that pairs really well with this quote too
my favorite part about this mspaint is how succinctly it depicts the Titan. it was just a fucking tube with titanium endcaps.
do you want to see a submersible that's capable of reaching the titanic and has been in operation since 1964? yes this has been in operation for almost 60 years:
DSV Alvin - Wikipedia
look at how this thing was designed with safety in mind:
the part where the crew sits is entirely made out of titanium, and it's a sphere. why? because a sphere has less weak points than a cylinder. it's more or less uniformly strong in all directions
if you look at other deep sea subs that support a crew and you'll notice a pattern. while their superstructure that is not pressurized may vary, the pressurized compartments are spherical. take a look at this pretty comprehensive list of manned deep-sea submersibles and click through to some that are on the list of the deepest dives
Deep-submergence vehicle - Wikipedia
I referenced the Alvin first because it was famously used to explore the titanic but the list goes much deeper (remember the titanic is at about 4000m depth)
Here's a cutaway of the Challenger. Notice anything?
the titanium sphere used to house the crew?
now look at the Titan:
its an accident waiting to happen.
the Alvin designed 60 years ago is still diving to the depths beyond the titanic, and has completed around FIVE THOUSAND DIVES because it was designed with safety in mind
the Titan got crushed into a billionaire smoothie maker because the CEO who commissioned it designed it to carry as many paying customers as possible for the lowest cost, and by his own mantra of "safety gets in the way of innovation"
you can't innovate your way around physics! the physics that led to the design of the Alvin in 1964 are the same physics that made gogurt out of you and your passengers mr stockton rush. no amount of free market entrepreneurial spirit is gonna make your tube go super saiyan at 4000m and prevent the mathematical certainty of physics from taking your life
So my latest obsession is apparently the official twitter for the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, which is about half recall announcements for various shitty amazon products and half…..memes? pseudo-memes?? works of surrealist art??? what do i even call these
Whoever made these is either a random middle-aged government worker who’s spent enough time with Young Internet People to be at least 60% sure what a meme is or a Gen Z artistic genius and i can’t decide which
obsessed with the way my robotics team lead talks
she’s reinventing hieroglyphics
Adhd symptoms no one talks about:
I cant finish cleaning my room because I can’t organize my desk because I haven’t organized my vanity because I cant organize my vanity because I haven’t organized my closet drawers because I cant organize my closet drawers until I organize my nightstand and I cant do that until I GET A NIGHTSTAND because the space between my really heavy bookshelf full of books and the space between my bed is abnormally narrow BUT TONIGHT WHILE I WAS AT ROSS I found the perfect nightstand so now I can go home and put all the stuff thats supposed to go on and under my nightstand on and under my nightstand and then I can organize the space next to my bed, then I can organize the closet drawers, then im at another impasse because I still need the proper vanity organizational materials; but we have made some achievements tonight boys
It’s like every problem is this
Sometimes even things that aren’t problems are Rush Hour…which then turns it into a problem when you can’t do it
