he’s sitting at his desk, chin in his hand, large green eyes focused on kaminari from across the room. he’s got his notebook open in front of him--- open to a page he’d been scribbling diligently on until his electric classmate walked in--- but it’s being ignored now. he doesn’t realize he’s staring until kaminari’s head turns and they lock eyes, and midoriya drops his head in a hurry, continuing to write about shinsou’s strengths and weaknesses.
he hopes his cheeks don’t look as red as they feel. why do they feel so red?
so deku is awkward and probably won’t actually do anything about having a crush on your muse for valentine’s day, but y’all should like this for a tiny starter in which maybe they could realize he’s being a mess in their general direction

FORGET THE NAILCARE, now he’s sewious. ❛ oi! you n’ your twelve girlfriends tryna play dumb with me, midoriya? you think i can’t handle the truth?! ❜ probably because he can’t, and the fact that it’s only been about thirty seconds into their conversation and his eyes are already wet is a testament to that.
❛ you’re one of the top students in the class and you’re so modest about it! not to mention your friggin’ quirk — i still don’t understand what’s going on there — and how every girl is, like, totally all over you! plus you’re smart and sweet and kinda corny but like, in a really admirable way, so you can’t possibly sit here and tell me you don’t have eighteen girlfriends all queued up and ready to spend 26 - girlfriend - day with you! just cut the shit, dude! ❜
twelve? eighteen? TWENTY-SIX?? now he’s really confused and he thinks vaguely that if kaminari were to attack him, he’d absolutely have the upper hand--- he doesn’t think he could be more caught off guard than he is right now. he’s still caught on the escalating number of girlfriends he supposedly has when his classmate tells him to cut the shit, and an almost overwhelming feeling of guilt strikes him as the rest of his words sink in.
“---kaminari---” what is he supposed to say right now??? what, really, is making the other boy’s eyes tear up like that?
he’s frozen still, mind and body, as he desperately wishes he knew what to do. he can’t even manage to get himself into the muttering stage, trying to work his way through the other boy’s thought process. instead he pauses, opens his mouth, and then presses his lips together before finally settling on, “---do... do you need a hug?”

even deku’s outlook is better than hers… after all he’s been through, his resolve hasn’t even been dented. then again, that’s a lot of what drew her to him in the first place. when she’s around deku, she’s reminded that HERO is more than a job title, and becoming one isn’t about skill alone.
iida is probably closer to really understanding what that means than she is. he and deku both —-
no. she’s doing it again.
whether she means to or not, she can’t help comparing her own progress to that of her fellow classmates, deku worst of all. sooner or later, she’s going to have to decide what being a hero means to her. she’s spent so long thinking her own motivations are too shallow to carry her through, but at her very core, doesn’t she want the same thing deku does? she wants to make someone’s life better.
she’s just going about it a little differently, that’s all. she just needs to figure out her own brand of heroism. for starters, she’ll have to stop viewing deku as the bar she’s aiming for. she needs to set her own bar, and overcome the last.

why does this keep happening to him? he knows it’s not the same as when kacchan decided to fight him, not by a long shot, but it still catches him off guard enough that he can feel the hairs standing up on the back of his neck. it’s not the same for a multitude of reasons, one of which being that he has no desire to hurt her. he hadn’t wanted to hurt bakugou either, but---
that’s exactly why she wants to do this, isn’t it? because he looks at her--- they all look at her, and at some of the others--- as if her quirk isn’t made for battle. that, maybe, she can’t hold her own against someone like him whose quirk is a force to be reckoned with. he presses his lips together, forces the nerves in his spine to settle, and he curls his hands into fists. he still doesn’t like it, not really, and he knows the look that recovery girl will give them when they’re inevitably found out, but... he doesn’t want to look at her like she can’t hold her own, because he knows that she can.
she’s smart; she’s strong; he admires her. so he’ll fight her. “okay, uraraka. let’s fight.”

he hadn’t started out reading over iida’s shoulder. he’d come down to the common area to ask him something but, seeing him so invested in his book, he’d stopped short. then he’d caught a glimpse of the story over the back of the couch and, somehow, had wound up sitting next to him and enjoying the story alongside him. he can’t remember when it was he’d sat down or even what he’d come to ask the taller boy, but he doesn’t really care. it’s refreshing.
they’re still students. he doesn’t allow himself the luxury of remembering that often. they all get excited when their schoolwork actually consists of schoolwork, but midoriya is more often than not going to push himself behind the scenes even harder because he feels as though he’ll slip behind everyone else when he isn’t looking. relaxation is something he doesn’t award himself lately.
sitting against iida’s warmth, head against his arm as he reads, he can almost remember what it feels like.

they really all feel the same way about each other, don’t they? he feels like he’s behind everyone else, too. he has for as long as he can remember been ( I’M SO SORRY, IZUKU! ) convinced that he’s got to work a million times harder just to catch up. trying to surpass his classmates is a feat that he still sees as impossible but he intends to give it his all. he has to deserve the quirk he’s been given.
“i don’t see it that way,” he says, and he strains to offer kaminari a smile. he’s been working on that--- on not allowing his worries to show on his face--- and he’s getting there. sort of.
“i don’t think you’re behind... i’ve always felt like i’m trying to catch up to you. your quirk is so strong! and you’re so cheerful.” he lacks a sense of humor. he’s always known this, and that fact had only been further driven into him by his internship. he’s nowhere near being the smiling symbol of peace that all might has been and since that, ultimately, is his goal...
his smile widens, arms secured tightly around his classmate so that he’s steady even with his weak knees. “so don’t be bummed!” i envy your smile, he thinks, but doesn’t say so. “people are watching.”

HE’S SO CONFUSED. he doesn’t have one girlfriend, much less ten, and--- hotshot??? he wonders if kaminari would believe him if he told him how startled he’d been the first time he’d spoken to uraraka, or if he knew that all the situations that he keeps winding up in are just that. he has no real grasp on anything romantic ( others’ interests in him included ) and he, honestly, hadn’t even realized valentine’s day was just around the corner.

SHE SPOTS HIM. even through the heavy lunch crowd, she has no trouble locking on to his puffy green hair, and a quick zoom verifies what she already knew. luckily she has an old favorite on hand – the hydraulic rods she used in the sports festival – and she propels herself over the crowd to drop down in front of izuku, narrowly missing the food tray in his hands.
“so?? how are they? my new babies – have you tried them? you’re not wearing them.”
it takes everything he has not to yell when she drops down in front of him, but he does flinch hard enough that the tray in his hands jumps out of them and clatters onto the floor. he doesn’t seem upset by it though ( bakugou likely would have blown her halfway across the world for throwing his lunch in the floor ) and instead tries very hard to assure her that he loves her new babies.
“oh!! hatsume! they’re great!” he says, dropping down to clean the mess he’s made in the floor. “everything you make is incredible.”
