the final scene in the drama, when charlie "lies" to emma about his broken nose is actually deeply indicative of his character. he will not admit to things he did—he cheated on her and had no plans of telling her and humiliated her on a public capacity on her wedding day. the whole movie, he expects her to explain, justify and account for events that did not actually take place, while he cannot even bring himself to admit to what she knows he has done, and he barely takes any steps towards addressing the shit he actually did.

idk man i was way more shocked by rachel's admission and the way she clearly justified it to herself and had no guilt whatsoever. like get off your high horse you don't get to judge anybody lmao.

also this was weirdly romantic. like yeah exactly stick by your crazy queen. i love me a good failmarriage.

seriously still thinking about The Drama. Emma needs to dump that "maid of honor" immediately. what a truly horrendous human being Rachel was and is. nothing redeeming about her or her self centered self righteousness. absolutely unforgivable. there were people in my theater literally hissing at the screen towards the end, every time Rachel showed up. Charlie has no spine and brought all the drama onto himself. the minute Emma realized he lied to her on their first date she should have dumped him. baby, truly, there are better men out there for you.

7/10 for me. zendaya's quivering lip is getting her a golden globe nomination at the least, but she deserves an actor nom, too. and I will never say no to a weepy robert pattinson.

I do like what they were doing with the subtle racism in this film too. Like rachel assuming mike's uncle was like a gangster not a cop. And I also really liked the moment where emma's dad was like haha I know you took my gun and disappeared it and charlie like leans over her like "so you just... kept guns in the house?" I did laugh at that like. Yeah? Of course he did? Where do you think you live??? And the fact that both are cops.... there's like a million half formed ideas in my head rn but I cannot wait for more people to see this film

Look, Emma planning on doing a school shooting and almost going through with it (and just not doing it because she would’ve been upstaged by the other shooting and/or she realized how bad the impact would’ve been) is obviously very bad but who are you to judge Rachel? You put a mentally disabled child in a closet in the depths of a forest, ran away and told no one… that’s attempted murder… That doesn’t change just because he was found… Emma ‚just‘ thought about it, you actually did it… Jesus

something really cool about the drama also is that while we, as an audience, have access to emma's interiority, memories and anxieties, charlie does not. emma never has to articulate to us why she considered going through with her plan and why she ultimately chose not to. we can see exactly how she reacted to being confronted with the consequences of the kind of harm she wanted to inflict on others and the steps she took to prevent herself and others from enacting that harm. i don't think she would've been unable to explain it, but i find it crucial that we see it instead of hear it, because it dispells any indication that she is not genuine, and it impresses on us what her motivations were and what factors dissuaded her. charlie, however, does not have access to her memories and interiority the same way we do and would have to investigate and interpret her framing and narrative of that moment.

and, because charlie's portrayed as being functionally emotionally illiterate, the gaps emma leaves are filled with his own assumptions and bad faith, oversimplified interpretations of her actions. he can't, but also won't, do the interpretive work that emma cannot do for him.

my takeaway from The Drama is that it's always a white woman at the center fanning the flames of drama that would have faded out without her.

It’s not lost on me that Rachel had to make a point of her black husband growing up surrounded by guns but he came out okay because he’s scared to death of them now, which was a nice way of saying that he’s ’one of the good ones’.

And its still making me so crazy how intentionally it goes from "charlie you were 14 that so doesnt count. Ok whatever man" to "you were 15? What like it's supposed to make it better?"

Plus with the realization these are his friends not really hers. And how horrible she looks that entire scene she really fucking doesnt wanna say it and she's downing the fucking wine and he doesnt notice her. And later "I dont wanna talk about this, you're fucked up. How did you get so drunk?" God I feel sick

The drama is what happens when a man with no backbone meets a woman with no ability to make friends and they get drunk with a racist white woman and her black husband who's also missing a backbone

The thing about the Drama that I have a hard time coming to terms with is the reason why Emma didn't go and commit the shooting. Everyone goes with the most uncharitable interpretation of those events; as if she didn't do it because she would no longer be "the first" one to do it in her town.

The movie shows how the shooting impacted the students at Emma's school, and Emma had to sit and take in all the reactions of those around her. The pain it caused others, how shameful it is to do such a thing, the weight of real life taken. Her not going through with it read to me less as a disappointment, and more as a wake-up call.

Before the shooting happened, her view of such events was glamorized play pretend. She was trying to make a "cool" sounding manifesto putting on silly makeup and clothes. After it happened, she was face-to-face with the real consequences that would have on the people around her, and she chose not to go through with her plan.

Charlie's interpretation of this event was the MOST uncharitable possible interpretation of how things went down and idk why his viewpoint is the one taken in this scenario.

I appreciate The Drama’s stance that in the USA it doesn’t take any kind of special psychopath to become a mass shooter. It’s essentially encouraged with no barrier to entry and the only thing that takes Emma down that road is like a few bad years. A moderate level of bullying and isolation. The only thing that pulls her out is like, a few good friends. A club.

She wants to kill people because like she’s bored and lonely. That’s genuinely it. And she sees no real irony or falsehood in her becoming a gun control activist because it’s as genuine as the first thing.

She really does seem to be immediately past that. She’s over it. It wasn’t about hurting people, it was about looking cool and having an impact on others. Being an activist fills the same role in her life.

It’s still terrifying that it was that close. As Charlie points out, if there are thousands of mass shootings a year, how many people in this country are there who wanted to or almost did but didn’t go through with it? No one at her school knew, except, like, didn’t they?

Everyone who grew up in the age of mass school shootings felt like it could be them next, any day, any time, maybe anyone. It became baked into our routines and casual consciousness. It’s all just happenstance that it wasn’t us, specifically. It’s pure luck.
