Post GDC!
Kia Ora all!
I’m back in Auckland now after an amazing time in San Francisco for my first GDC. I wasn’t showing desolate there, but was meeting amazing people and learning as much as I could from all the talks and tutorials. This was also my first time in San Francisco, so I got to explore the city and get my tourist on. Thanks again to the NZGDA for giving me the chance to go and have this wonderful experience.
What was my GDC experience like? Well most of my time was spent meeting as many people as I could and catching up with friends from Japan and Korea. Going to a lot of parties was the best chance to meet a lot of great people. Also just finding people on the show floor that I have always wanted to meet. I attended the Game Design Workshop on the first day to learn about failing fast and iterating on ideas to make a great game. I think it was a worthwhile Workshop, but don’t think their ideologies can be applied to all games, especially in this era where we have so many unique games coming out that break the mold for what a game should be. Some of the best talks I went to were Writing’Nothing’:Storytelling with Unsaid Words and Unreliable Narrators, Building Firewatch in Unity, Graphic Design is Key, Everyone Can Do PR, The Current State of Muslim Representation in Video Games,, and the Experimental Gameplay Workshop. But there were so many other great talks that I’ll have to check out in the GDC Vault later. What are my biggest take aways? Mainly PR and design related, stuff which I was already looking at before going. But this helped give me new ideas and think differently about it. For example the importance of branding. I’m already working on a new website for InkBit Collective and desolate, so it’s good to know I’m heading down the right path already. Game wise it was so inspirational to see. Especially the Day of the Devs booth and the Experimental Gameplay workshop. I’m always interested in pushing the boundaries of what games can do, and there were so many awesome games that really take it to the next level. Whats next? Back to work on finishing desolate! I need to get the new demo finished so I can start getting feedback on it again. There is a lot more new animations to do, so I’ll be posting a lot of that here. And letting people know when the new websites are finished.
Also I had an awesome idea for a VR game so I’ll be playing with my new google cardboard to prototype that as fast as I can. Hopefully I’ll get the chance to attend the next GDC.
Until next time enjoy some photos from GDC!

Looks beautiful!
Moving Forward
March is here, and it's been a little while since the last update. But it feels like Im moving forward quickly now.
Ive moved back to New Zealand and Im full time on desolate, finally. Its been a dream of mine for some time to finally go full time and be able to concentrate and finish desolate.
Since being back in NZ its been a busy time. Ive been getting ready to go to GDC this Friday! Thanks to the NZGDA for giving me a ticket! This will be my first time attending and I cant wait to meet many other awesome game developers!
Ive started a new InkBit Collective website, and am in the process of updating the desolate website as well.
The game has been coming along well and Im looking forward to sharing more soon. Ive started re doing all the animations again, this time using Spine, so looking forward to showing you that! Also been re-programming a lot of it and getting it feeling a lot better. So hoping to show off some gameplay finally as well.
Until next time.
Happy New Years from Gab and Elliot at InkBit Collective! Have a great 2016!
A bit late, but some cool photos of me and Gabriele showing Brutal Botany in Busan, Korea, for BIC fest. Was an amazing festival, where we made a so many great friends and had a wonderful time showing the game. We hope to go next year as well. We haven't posted to much recently because I'm getting ready to go back to NZ. So working hard to get everything ready for that. More to show with Brutal Botany and desolate soon!!
We will be presenting Brutal Botany at BIC Festival in Busan this Friday and Saturday! If you happen to be around please come by and play our game :)
We’re showing at BIC Fest!!
Kia ora! This week has been all go!
We’re trying to get everything on the Brutal Botany demo done as quickly as we can because we will be showing the game at BIC Festival in Busan, Korea!!!
It will be the first time showing the game and we’re very excited. So to go along with that we’ve set up a website just for Brutal Botany, similar to the desolate website.
Check it out at http://brutalbotany.com/
Im the coming weeks we hope to have a a bit more to show, a few gifs to show the action. If you are going to BIC festival be sure to come around and play the game.
Here’s a quick looks at a new level, Thanks for reading :)
First Brutal Botany screens
Hello!
So recently InkBit has had 2 games on the go at once, but this is the first screens to come from Brutal Botany.
We’re busy getting the demo ready and will be showing it in Korea at BIC. The game is still young and will change a lot of development I’m sure. More details to come.
But for this week please enjoy these glorious screens :)
Who are we?
Kia Ora,
Welcome, here we are now, this is the first update on the new InkBit Tumblr DevLog, and I thought what better way to start than by introducing who we are and what we’re working on.
First off we are working on two games at the moment: desolate, and Brutal Botany. desolate is a 2d puzzle adventure, somewhere in between an Another World and an Abe’s Oddysee. After shadowy figures have invaded your village you have to sacrifice your family friends to escape, only to realise your mistake too late. You have to find a way to make things right, accept yourself, and change. Brutal Botany is a Bomberman-like deathmatch biological sim. You and your friends play as biologists trying to kill each other in the annual Bontany Deathmatch Confrence. Plant seeds in the wall to change the terrain and squish your friends.
So who are we? well I’m @elliotcollis working on both desolate and Brutal Botany. I started InkBit Collective 2 years ago when I started working on desolate. I do everything except the music on it which is done by Ben Tolich. I am also programming Brutal Botany. There is also @_cartographer better known as Gabriele Pala. He is designing and doing all the artwork for Brutal Botany. Currently working in Tokyo. We first met at the local PicoTachi event at Pico Pico Cafe.
If you have any questions please let us know, we will be posting smaller updates here as they come. A lot can be found on desolate, including the successful Kickstart done last year, a few articles and the desolate website. Not much can be found yet on Brutal Botany, a spot light for Gabriele at Tokyo indies and the original pico8 demo.
Thanks for reading :)
