Psychology Program holds Poster Presentation for Seniors
Report by: Charissa Santiago
Bright hues of varied colors and diverse decorative ornaments played against the scenery as students proudly hung the picture of their finished work. At long last, after countless cups of coffee and sleepless nights, they find themselves staring at the fruits of their labor and concluding their four yearlong effort with a festival of colors.
The seniors of the Bachelor of Science in Psychology program held their poster presentations at the main lane of Xavier University last March 6, 2017. The students came in as early as 7:30 in the morning to prepare for their presentations which was opened to the public at 9:OO that morning. Â
Posters hung from every side from the entrance of the University to the chapel. Here, the seniors were given the opportunity to share the invaluable results they gathered and analyzed for their thesis to the whole XU community. Everyone, whether a student, staff, or teacher, was invited to take a look at the posters, listen to the studyâs summary, and raise queries about the studentsâ studies.
According to Sir Jason Manaois, the current Department Chairman of XUâs Psychology Department, Â the undergraduate research poster presentation first materialized just last year. Having gathered a pool of significant data in research and statistics, the need to communicate these valuable results to a wider audience was seen. Thus, the idea of having the undergraduate poster presentations was conceived.
Sir Manaois further explained the value of passing on the studentsâ hard-earned work, âI believe that every researcher has the responsibility to inform the public about the result of their research. When we talk about research ethics, part of it is actually about feedbacking. Its impact to students is actually materializing their one year of hardwork. Itâs a good culminating activity for seniors to see and present their output not only to psyc faculty but as well as to other students.â
Presenting the results of the seniorsâ thesis also helps set an example to the lower years, as Sir Manaois further mentioned. The works presented by the seniors can be used as a sample, model, or inspiration for the upcoming batches to follow when their time finally comes as well.
The poster presentation strengthens the research culture in the Psychology program. It is a booming period for research in XU and it can be seen that the field of Psychology is finally being taken seriously by other professions and students as well. Constantly having students awarded with research grants and asked to present relevant researches in events, it can be seen that the psychology program has definitely made a mark in the community.
The poster presentation lasted until 2:00 in the afternoon of that day. It was concluded with the announcement of winners for special awards. These awards were namely Best Poster, Best Presenter, and Best Study based on the responses of the teachers and guests.
