I've been thinking about this - and why asking the demon is also a bad idea

Tartini was a composer and violin teacher and no one respected him, he was generally broke, and he started having weird dreams in which the devil asked him to teach him violin

"Deconstruction" does not (necessarily) mean "Adding a bunch of sex and violence and drug use and suicide to a work to make it grimdark"; it means, essentially, "foregrounding the implicit contradictions in a work by making them explicit in the text to showcase and critique their ideology in the wider culture."

So, for example "Watchmen" was deconstructive because superhero comics up to that point had, by and large, not really interrogated their own role with respect to things like the military-industrial complex or the rather sordid real-life history of vigilantism in the United States or the sexual psychology of an individual dressing up in (essentially) bondage gear and going out to beat people up on the street. The sex and the violence serve a thematic purpose. It doesn't become more deconstructive by adding *more* sex and violence to it; it depends on what was in (or left out of) the original work.

That's why the best superhero deconstruction in the last 20 years was Lego Batman.

as always prefacing by saying there’s nothing wrong with a more shallow approach to engaging with media but the real annoying thing is that people who do engage with media primarily through like, shipping or blorbofication or heavy projection or whatever also tend to assume everyone else is doing the exact same thing. so if you write something about the ways in which a character or dynamic is kind of messed up and what that means in the context of the broader work there will almost always be someone who assumes you’re just doing it to attack that character or dynamic and everyone who likes them because you’re a big meanie. which is inherently a very immature and unproductive way to approach any sort of discussion. like, stop being so defensive and realize that we’re doing fundamentally different things here. many are far more interested in approaching media as cultural artifact than a documentary about themselves/their best friends, you might benefit from taking a step back and considering that a bit
