// soulmate AU, take 2
“This is just too hard. This...” He waited for the word, one foot jangling anxiously, and when he didn’t find it quick enough, the flat of one hand found the desk. The shock of sound hadn’t died out before he felt the term on his tongue.
“... soulmate thing. I know they say I’m your only chance. Biology...” He trailed off again, uncaring this time about the words that wouldn’t come. She knew the science of it better than he did; he didn’t need to explain the problem to her.
“But I can’t do this. I’m sorry.” And he was. For her, mostly. He didn’t often feel sorry for himself anymore. Just angry. Especially at how easy it was to find the words he knew would crush her.
“--I can’t be your soulmate.”
